Meanwhile, Caroline and Prince Carmine sat underneath the gazebo. After the fiasco with two frogs and outsiders invading the masquerade ball, Caroline was knocked over and people were able to see under her skirt. Luckily for her, she was helped up by someone who turned out to be none other than Prince Carmine, Anakin's twin brother. She nearly fell over again in a faint when she looked into his big blue eyes. Even though he had the same face as Anakin, him being easy to tell apart from his twin because of his glasses and longer hair, Caroline felt something different, more genuine about this prince than she did with the other one.
Carmine, on the other hand, found himself feeling things he'd never felt before when he looked into Caroline's eyes, and when he said hello and introduced himself to her, to his surprise, he didn't stammer or stutter like he typically did around most other folks. It was as though she was the key to unlocking his confidence.
Today, the two of them were getting a fresh start having a nice date sharing some tea under the beautiful gazebo in the Mitchells' backyard garden.
"Prince Carmine, I am so mortified you had to endure that fiasco with the frogs and thieving outsiders last night." said Caroline.
"Well, we were promised excitement." Carmine chuckled. "And it was definitely a lot more excitement than I'm used to."
"I always thought princes got to go on daring journeys on their loyal steeds." Caroline said.
Carmine shook his head. "Not this prince. Life is kinda boring for me. Harmony is more of a music loving horse, and when you live the way I do, you realize you don't know how to do anything with everyone doing everything for you."
"I honestly never thought of it that way."
"You should've seen the time I tried to learn how to cook. My sister Kara had to get out the fire extinguisher, and we all got covered in foam by the time the fire was out. But, figuring out how to dress and groom ourselves was easy. I mean, really, how hard is it to brush one's teeth themselves? We're not babies."
Caroline laughed with Carmine as he told her some more funny stories of all kinds of crazy disasters he and his siblings got into trying to figure out how to do certain things themselves.
A disguised Amedda saw this and became worried. It looked Caroline was hitting it off with Anakin's twin brother, and if she fell in love with Carmine, Amedda couldn't get Caroline to fall for Anakin or marry him and the whole voodoo plan would be ruined! So, if he wanted to marry Caroline, he'd have to steal her away from Carmine first.
The two of them spent some more time talking, and Carmine pulled out something special to him. A music box that played a beautiful little song, to which he asked Caroline to dance to since they didn't get much time to dance last night. And she accepted.
Amedda decided to step in right away.
"Mind if I cut in?" said Amedda.
"Anakin." said Carmine. "Where did you come from?"
"Uh... Coruscant? Like you did?"
"Very funny." said the prince sarcastically. "And Caroline and I were in the middle of a dance."
"I believe she and I danced together first." said Amedda, pulling Caroline into a spin.
"Oh!" Caroline yelped.
"Come, my dear. Do you recall the heavenly night we had together?"
"Oh, well... it was a beautiful night, and I-"
"Surely you deserve only a prince who can make you feel like a queen." Amedda said. "Our time has been brief, but it was heavenly."
That was also when Carmin noticed something odd about his twin. Anakin's hand started turning blue.
"Uh, Anakin, why is your hand blue?" said Carmine.
"Oh!" Amedda quickly hid his hand in his pocket. "Must be a chill. Brr!"
"It's eighty degrees out here." Carmine pointed out.
"Miss Caroline. Would you do me the honor of becoming princess of Coruscant?" Amedda asked Caroline.
Before, Caroline might have said yes immediately, but instead, she said, "Are you crazy?"
Amedda was shocked at this.
"You just rudely interrupted me and Carmine in the middle of a date, and you're proposing to me right in front of him? On top of it, we literally just met last night! As much as I've dreamed of marrying a prince since I was a child, I can't marry a man I just met, much less one who would try to steal another man's girl." Caroline then took Carmine's hand. "If you'll excuse me, I'm on a date with a real man."
And she walked away with Carmine just as Amedda began transforming into his true form, and he hid in the bushes just before Carmine and/or Caroline could see him.
"Did something seem off about him, to you?" Carmine asked as he and Caroline were out of earshot.
"You've obviously known him longer than me. How should I know?" Caroline said.
"Anakin can be reckless, and he may have a problem with authority, but he'd never act like that. He's been adored by girls all his life, but he's never tried going after a girl he knew already had a guy in her life. He's too smart for that."
Meanwhile, Palpatine was not the least bit happy when he caught sight of Amedda's amulet. The red color on it was disappearing; the spell was wearing off!
"Now, because of your little slip-up with our froggy prince, I am reduced to asking for help from my friends on the other side."
"And, what of Prince Carmine?" said Amedda.
"Let me worry about him."
Carmine escorted Caroline back into the house, and they sat together and talked as the Mitchells' cook served them a nice lunch.
"So, your staff does literally everything for you." Caroline said. "You don't get to be anywhere by yourselves?"
"Except the bathroom. That's the one place I get any privacy, and the one place I could hide all my life."
"Why would a prince want to hide from the rest of the world?"
It was a touchy subject for Carmine, but he explained to Caroline that he suffered from anxiety since he was a child. He was scared all the time, especially doing anything where he feared humiliation. Public speaking, royal balls, presentations in school, or just talking to people who weren't his family. His parents cut Anakin off from funds, but not Carmine. Their reason for sending Carmine to New Starlanes was hoping it would help him come out of his shell.
"It doesn't really help when you have people doing everything for you, and never letting you do so much as open the door yourself." Carmine said. "You trip on the stairs one time, and you're labeled for life as helpless. I might as well go out wearing a sign saying, 'Don't let me do anything myself, I'm helpless!'"
"I'm sorry. I had no idea."
"There is one thing I am able to do myself." Carmine said. "When I was little, my parents enrolled me in music lessons to help my anxiety. My therapist said it would help me practice focus and keep my emotions in check."
"What kind of music do you play?"
"Classical, mostly. But, I kinda write my own stuff from time to time. Piano and guitar are my instruments."
Caroline brought Carmine to a piano they had in their house and asked Carmine if he would play something for her.
"I don't know. I haven't played in front of anyone before. Except my brother's dog."
"You don't have to be afraid to play in front of me." Caroline said, fluttering her eyelashes.
Carmine found his face turning very red. He looked at the piano and placed his hands on the keys. Taking a breath, he began to play a pretty song.
Carmine:
I've always been the kind of guy
That hid my face
So afraid to tell the world
What I've got to say
But I have this dream right inside of me
I'm gonna let it show, it's time
To let you know, to let you know
This is real, this is me
I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be, now
Gonna let the light shine on me
Now I've found who I am
There's no way to hold it in
No more hiding who I want to be
This is me
Caroline felt something inside her that she never realized she was missing when it came to all the princes she'd seen in fairytales and when she danced with Anakin. Something about the sincerity in Carmine's voice, his clear sensitivity, and the way he expressed himself so clearly around her unlike any other girl he was around, it made her heart soar.
Do you know what it's like to feel so in the dark?
To dream about a life where you're the shining star
Even though it seems like it's too far away
I have to believe in myself, it's the only way
This is real, This is me
I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be, now
Gonna let the light shine on me
Now I've found who I am
There's no way to hold it in
No more hiding who I want to be
This is me
Caroline soon looked into Carmine's eyes and began to sing and play along with him.
Caroline:
You're the voice I hear inside my head
The reason that I'm singing
I need to find you, I gotta find you
You're the missing piece I need
The song inside of me
I need to find you, I gotta find you
Carmine:
This is real, this is me
I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be, now
Gonna let the light shine on me
Both:
Now I've found who I am
There's no way to hold it in
No more hiding who I want to be, yeah
This is me
Carmine:
You're the missing piece I need
The song inside of me
You're the voice I hear inside my head (Caroline: this is me, yeah)
The reason that I'm singing
Both:
Now I've found, who I am
There's no way to hold it in
No more hiding who I want to be
This is me
And as though they'd fallen under some kind of spell, the prince and the heiress leaned forward, closed their eyes... and kissed!
