In the middle of a playground, a group of elementary school bullies were attacking a younger kid. Their fun, however, would soon be stopped by two youths about their age. They were well-known in their school with one boy having jade green hair, and the other boy had light blue hair.
"Oh snap!," one of the bullies said, his tongue turning out to be forked. "It's Midoriya and Maki!"
Izuku Midoriya was the green haired kid, and Hideki Maki was the blue haired kid.
"Big deal," the leader of the bullies said dismissively, "They won't be so tough against my Quirk."
His right arm started sparking with blue electricity.
"My Quirk Megawatt can electrocute anyone!"
He ran forward and punched Maki, but nothing happened, the boy smirked at him.
"Idiot, don't you know my Quirk? I can alter my body in any way."
Hideki was unaffected due to his body transforming into rubber. His Quirk was Multi-Shapeshifting and it allowed him to transform into more than one being at once. He could also change into inanimate objects as well.
Izuku then spoke.
"When me and Hideki work together, we're an unstoppable team. I am Quirkless but I have learnt Ki Manipulation so I can keep up."
"Do you see now that you jerks didn't have a chance against Midibro and I?" Hideki said.
Izuku picked up where Hideki left off.
"So leave that kid alone. I don't care if his Quirk is nothing special. We're future heroes, and heroes never let the innocent suffer."
The bullies' leader tried to rally his minions, but Izuku and Hideki were already on them faster than they could react.
Hideki stretched his arms rapidly back and forth as he delivered rapid fire punches. Izuku followed by using Kiai to blast the reeling bullies away. Izuku then helped the bullying victim to his feet.
"You guys were so awesome," he said, "I wish that my own Quirk wasn't so useless, so I could fight back against those bullies..." The victim said.
"So that's the problem." Midoriya said.
"It's hard in this world for a person to have an insignificant or weak Quirk." Hideki said.
"Especially when Ki Manipulation and Magic has helped the Quirkless stand side by side with the Quirked." He continued.
"Yeah but you don't need to have abilities like we do to be a hero. Sometimes, just being able to help others makes one a hero." Midoriya said encouragingly.
The kid then thanked them for their help before leaving.
The world in which the two boys lived was full of wonderful and bizarre were genes that allowed people to manifest abilities that used to be only seen in comic books, Quirks.
One day in Qing Qing, China, a "Luminescent Baby" was born with a unique power called a "Quirk". Then, around the world, as time passed, humanity started to obtain Quirks and people realized that their dreams of being Heroes could become a reality with these powers. Now, 80% of the world is composed of superhumans and people's dreams of being heroes has become a profession that is under the spotlight. The emergence of Quirks had also led to Magic reappearing in the World.
Magic was once thought to be fiction, however it was very real. Many centuries ago, before the advent of Quirks, magic and its users who were known as magicians were abundant in the world. However, one day magic began to retreat from the world, causing mages to become weaker and thus more vulnerable to people who feared and despised magic. The Witch Hunters soon hunted the mages into near-extinction. Countless magical lore was destroyed and lost with the remaining magicians disappearing into obscurity in order to survive. However, by some miracle, magic returned to the world around the same time Quirks spread among the population of Earth. Curiously though, only the Quirkless had access to magic, no Quirked individual was a magician.
Magic wasn't the only preternatural power that appeared at the same time as Quirks, as Ki Manipulation, once a rarity whose practitioners (called Ki Users) were kept secret from the majority of the world's population, was revealed during the dawn of Quirks. Ki Manipulation is a power as old as time, and unlike magic however, Ki Manipulation can be learned by anyone because Ki flowed through everything. Though Quirkless can use Ki Manipulation easier than the Quirked as some Quirk factors interfere with Ki Manipulation.
Heroes and villains soon with either Quirks, Magic and Ki Manipulation, or some combination of the three, tended to battle each other, the heroes protecting the people while the villains committed crimes in their own self-interests.
A Quirk would tend to manifest at around age 4, and most could be picked up with a standard medical examination. Potential magicians were sought out at an early age and registered by the Bureau of Magical Affairs. They were sent to magic schools so that they could learn to harness their magical power. Magicians who desired to become Pro Heroes were often transferred to Hero schools where they took special courses. Ki Manipulation was taught at dojos and anyone who wished to learn to control their Ki would apply to a dojo. Ki Users took special examinations after training in order to obtain a license to use Ki in public.
Right now, Izuku and Hideki, currently in junior high, were watching as a giant villain was rampaging through the city. Already, heroes were on the scene.
The first one to arrive was Death Arms, who possessed a Quirk called Juggernaut. His Quirk gave him incredible strength, letting Death Arms catch a falling radio tower the giant villain had knocked over.
Helping to keep civilians out of the line of fire was Backdraft, a fire rescue hero whose Quirk, Water Pump, could create an endless supply of water from the spigots growing from his hands, and manipulate that water at will. Some of the people noted that the giant villain was just an amateur purse thief who got cornered, and it wasn't long before they found out by whom.
Two heroes leapt down, one was a cyborg with white hair and the other had a costume with wood for armor. The former was Raiden, and he was Quirkless but was a Ki User. The latter was Kamui Woods, with his Quirk Arbor. This was a simple Quirk that let him generate and control wood.
The two leapt at the giant villain, who spouted the usual threats and swatted at them.
"How thick do you think his skin is at this size?," Raiden asked.
"Thick enough that anti-tank rifles would be hard-pressed to pierce it," Kamui Woods suggested.
"But he'd still feel the pain."
Raiden smirked.
"All I need to know..."
He leapt at the giant, withdrawing his High-Frequency Blade and channeling his Ki through it. The blade became covered with electricity.
"Slash-Go-Round!"
With great speed, he slashed at the villain over and over, the giant barely managing to put up a guard as he winced from the blade scraping against his skin, forcing him back.
"Nice work, Raiden!," Kamui Woods called out as he ran along the train bridge.
"Just keep him busy a little longer!"
He extended a wooden tendril that wrapped around the villain's limbs.
"You're charged with assault, robbery, and illegal use of superpowers!"
Raiden landed next to him.
"Looks like we're not the only ones coming. Look over there."
He pointed, and Kamui Woods sighed, seeing a large young woman in a skin-tight leotard, a few feet taller than the giant villain, leaping in Kamen Rider style.
"Canyon Cannon!"
She immediately kicked the villain, knocking him off the bridge. Cameramen suddenly appeared in droves, trying to get a picture as the attractive woman was bent over while tying up the villain.
"Piece of cake for the world's hottest new superhero. Hello there, everyone. Name's Mount Lady, and my Quirk is Gigantification."
As Mount Lady began to shrink to normal size, Midoriya thought about how this was their world now. Every street looked like a scene from a comic book. As superpowers became available, villains started rising. And while world governments had their hands tied trying to rework laws with superpowers in mind, courageous men and women stepped up to contain the chaos. Hideki noticed Midoriya muttering to himself about Mount Lady's appearance while writing in his notebook.
"Again, Izuku?"
But he could see why Midoriya would be taking notes. After all, Mount Lady's entrance had caused a giant dent in the pavement, showing that her power did have its drawbacks.
"Alright and I am done!" Izuku said after a moment.
"Finally!" Hideki smirked.
"Let's head to class before we're late."
The two friends were third-year students at Aldera Middle School.
"Right about now you all should be considering your future careers," said the homeroom teacher seriously before breaking out in a grin.
"Oh who am I kidding! You all want to be heroes!"
The majority of the class cheered in response as they showed off their Quirks.
"Oi Teach! Don't lump me in with these rejects!" A blonde haired and red eyed boy said.
"Bakugo just can't be humble for once in his life?" Hideki grumbled.
Izuku just frowned as Bakugo continued his rant. Years ago the two boys were once best friends, however when Bakugo got his Quirk, he became arrogant. It became worse when Izuku was discovered to be Quirkless as Bakugo started looking down on him and subjecting him to bullying. However things changed when Hideki and his family moved into their day while he was out playing, he saw Bakugo and his goons beating up Izuku. Hideki, being the good-natured person he is, intervened to save Izuku. He fought off Bakugo and his goons, causing the Explosion Quirk user to swear revenge on Hideki. Izuku was amazed that Hideki had saved him where no one else was willing to, and from that day on, the two would hang out together frequently.
Eventually Izuku accepted the fact that Bakugo no longer saw him as a friend, but he gained a new best friend in the form of Hideki. The latter even suggested that Izuku learn Ki Manipulation to better defend himself. Bakugo would try to torment Izuku and Hideki, but the duo foiled him every time, causing Bakugo to deeply resent them.
The teacher checked his papers.
"You applied for the U.A. High School, right?"
"Damn right! U.A. is the only place for the next number one hero, which is me!"
"It also says here that Midoriya and Maki also applied for U.A." The teacher replied.
Bakugo froze when he heard this and the rest of the class held their breaths. It was no secret that Bakugo hated Izuku and Hideki's guts.
"Wait for it…" Hideki mutters, knowing full well what is going to happen next.
"WHO THE HELL TOLD YOU BASTARDS TO APPLY TO U.A?!" Bakugo roared angrily.
"It's our choice Bakugo." Izuku said quietly.
"And nothing you can do can change our minds." Hideki said firmly while narrowing his eyes at Bakugo.
"You two think you're hot shit?! I am better than everyone in this dump of a school, I don't need to share the spotlight with you punks!" Bakugo retorted.
"Listen Ka-Bakugo, Hideki and I want to become heroes and there is nothing you can do to make us change that." Izuku said seriously.
Bakugo growled and was about to confront Izuku when the teacher interrupted him.
"Return to your seat Bakugo! This is not the time for fighting."
Bakugo scoffed before returning to his seat.
"That went well." Hideki said.
"It's been ten years now and he still hasn't changed." Izuku said dejectedly.
"There is just no reasoning with certain people, Izuku." Hideki said while shaking his head.
Meanwhile, a sludge villain was running from a store, cash stuffed into his body, and quickly chasing him was a raven-haired young woman. This was Tifa Lockheart, better known as the Pro Hero Avalanche. Tifa was Quirkless, but was a Ki User and a skilled martial artist. As the chase occurred, another figure, a skeletal looking blonde man, came out of a convenience store and spotted the chase.
"Might want to help her out," he noted.
He focused, and his body instantly grew into a more muscled form.
"Man," one guy on the street said, "It's like there's no stopping these villains."
"Yes, there is," the now enlarged man said.
The people turned and gasped in delight, the man smiling.
"Because I am here!"
