Chapter 2: Late for School
Some Years Later.
Reefside High
"Oh God, Oh God, I'm late," Kate muttered as she ran through the hallway, trying to tuck her pink blouse into her pencil lined checkered stitched skirt and make sure everything was in place.
"Miss McKinney," she heard the familiar voice behind her. She turned around to face Principle Randall standing in the women's bathroom door. Kate was just checking herself in the mirror to make sure she was at least presentable for her students today.
"You're late."
"I'm really sorry. Traffic was murder this morning and then I spilled my coffee on my new blouse today and had to go back home to get a new one-"
"Save it for Oprah dear," she said. "You're fine. Just don't be late again. Yes?"
Kate nodded indefinitely. "Yes ma'am."
"Thank you. Now go. I'm sure your students are expecting you."
"Yes, of course," Kate nodded.
Kate sighed and blew a deep breath out, letting her bangs fall onto her face.
She dabbed her eyes before she left the bathroom, and then headed to her classroom. She was the English teacher this year, a role she'd wanted for a long time. She loved English. She liked writing the most. It was something she was good at, and her creative outlet.
She walked through the hallway and then paused when she thought she heard a familiar voice behind her.
"Dr. Oliver. I'm Principle Randall," she said as they walked down the hallway.
"It's nice to meet you," he offered her hand to shake but she didn't shake it. "It's uh, you're first day too isn't it?"
"Yes," she said and opened up her folder. "But I'm still trying to figure out why a Doctor of paleontology all the way to Reefside to teach science to teenagers."
"Guess I'm looking for some peace and quiet," he replied.
"You became a high school teacher," she said, not buying it. "That doesn't really make a whole lot of sense, does it Dr. Oliver?" she turned to face him.
"You know I was thinking maybe we should get together that way you can know what you expect of me," he said.
"I expect you to make it hard for them, painful if at all possible. If they smile you know you're doing something wrong."
"Now I'm off to find my first trout. We'll talk later."
She walked away and Kate twirled around and smiled at Dr. Oliver. "She can be a real hard nose sometimes, but that's Principle Randall for ya."
"Kate," he smiled.
"Tommy. It's good to see you," she said and together they hugged.
"You too. You look great. Finally teaching English?"
"Yeah it's awesome. I love my job, aside from well, maybe Randall but you get used to her, I promise," she said.
"Guess I'll take your word for it."
"So, really a science teacher?" She asked.
He chuckled. "Yep. How about we get together some time?" he asked.
"Sure, I'd like that. Maybe today after school?"
"Okay. Great."
"Good luck. You too."
Kate smiled fondly after him as he took off to his classroom after they exchanged numbers. She put hers in the side pocket of her tote bag and headed off to her own classroom.
