Chapter 3: Detention

The students were great. They were a little noisy at first but sometimes a little talking to goes a long way. Kate liked her students so far, thus giving them poetry as their first assignment of the year. She knew they were all talented just like her kids last year. And one girl especially, Kira Ford was pretty talented in that aspect. She told Kate that she could sing and played guitar. Kate has since encouraged her musical skills to the test. What she didn't expect however was for Ethan James to be such a little hacker that he is. And Conner McKnight was the soccer ball player that nearly missed her class today if it hadn't been for Principal Randall finding him out in the field.

Kate walked through the halls with her tote bag. Classes have ended for the day and she was really looking forward to her…whatever it was gathering with Dr. Oliver. She ran into him in the hallway. He caught her arms before she could fall on her feet. She looked up and smiled at him a little embarrassed.

"Ha, hi, sorry did not mean to do that," she blushed. "How was your first day?"

"It went great, you?"

"Oh yeah, easy peasy," she said, and then cringed when she said that. Keep it together Kate.

"Dr. Oliver, Miss McKinney," Principle Randall said. They both shared a dreadful look together before they started walking up the stairs.

"How was your first day?" she asked.

"Great," Kate said.

"Ah they're great. No problems," he replied as well.

"Oh good, you're going to be seeing a lot more of them in detention."

"Mind telling me what we did?" Tommy asked.

"No, you and Kate are in charge of it today," Randall said.

Kate gawked at her. No. But they had plans after school today!

"Ah no I actually have plans to take Kate to a museum outside of town and-"

"Perfect bring the little monsters with you, that should be enough torture for them," she said as they walked up to three students standing against the wall. "You've all met I trust. Well, enjoy your little outing."

Tommy took his glasses off, "So, you guys like museums?"

When they got there, there was a huge dinosaur standing out on the lawn. But the place seemed deserted otherwise.

"Whoa, check out the T-Rex!" Ethan exclaimed.

They piled out of Tommy's black jeep and walked up to the museum which had a chain link and a sign that read closed.

"That's weird," Tommy observed.

"What is it?" Kate asked.

"Oh well, no museum for us," Connor said.

"Great, let's go home," Kira said.

"Tell you what, why don't you guys have a look around. If any of you guys find anything prehistoric, I'll cancel detention for the rest of the week," Tommy promised.

Kate smiled.

"Sweet," Ethan grinned.

"Kate and I will see if we can find someone who can tell us when they are opening up," Tommy said.

They went in another direction towards the woods. "Are you sure it's a good idea to leave them alone?" Kate asked worriedly.

"Yeah, sure, they'll be fine. High school students are very resilient," Tommy said.

Kate nodded. "Sounds like you speak from experience."

"You could say that," he said. "What about you?"

"I was homeschooled," Kate replied.

They walked up to the glass doors where there was a sign in front of him that said Under Management. "In case of emergency, call Anton Mercer industries. Anton Mercer…that's impossible."

Kate frowned at this. "Didn't he disappear or something like that?"

"Yeah," Tommy nodded.

"So now what?" Kate asked.

"I'm not sure," Tommy said. He turned around and headed back toward his jeep. Kate spun on her heel and followed him, but then stopped when he did. "Where did the…"

"I don't know," Kate gulped, looking up at the missing giant T-Rex that they saw earlier.

Suddenly Kate had a very bad feeling about this.

Tommy started to walk backwards until he turned around and faced himself with the T-Rex around the corner. It poked its huge head around the corner. Kate screamed at it and hid behind Tommy.

"What the heck?!" Kate asked. "Please tell me you've got a plan."

"I'm thinking," Tommy said.

"Think faster!" Kate yelled as the T-Rex roared in their faces. Tommy then jumped up in the air and round kicked him in the nose.

"Run!" Tommy and Kate took off running. The T-Rex followed them. He jumped into his jeep and Kate jumped into the passenger's side.

He pressed the lock button. Kate gawked at him. "Yeah real good Tommy lock the door."

"Come on!" Kate panicked.

Tommy nodded as he tried to get the car started. "Come on!" He put his seat belt on and so did she.

He drove down the highway as fast as he could with the T-Rex bumping it in the back of the car. Kate clung on for dear life.

"It's gaining on us!" Kate cried.

Tommy hit the gas pedal and drove even faster under the bridge up ahead. That did it. The T-Rex knocked right into the bridge causing it to collapse on the ground with the bridge debris.

He stopped the car abruptly. Then he unbuckled his seat belt and got out of the car. Kate did the same and knelt over beside him. Inside the T-Rex it looked like he was mechanical because she saw the lights spark together.

"Come on let's find the kids and get out of here," Tommy said.

"Mind explaining to me what was that?" Kate asked after she followed him to his jeep.

"Honestly, I've got no idea. But something isn't right, that's for sure," Tommy said.

They drove to the front of the museum and then got out to try and find them in the forest. They met up in the clearing.

"Hey, are you guys all right?" Tommy asked.

"Yeah, couldn't be better," Ethan said before Connor or Kira could say something.

Kate narrowed her eyes at them.

"Nothing out of the ordinary happened?" Tommy asked.

"Uh, just your average hike in the woods, and fury little creatures," Ethan replied.

"And a few scaly ones," Kira added.

"So, you get into the dino exhibit?" Connor asked.

Tommy and Kate shared a look.

"Uh, still working the kinks out," Tommy replied. "We better get you guys back, come on."

They started walking and Kate heard them mumbling about something and then turned to Tommy. "So, we're not telling anyone what happened today about the runaway T-Rex?"

"No way, people would freak out. Something weird is going on and I intend to find out," Tommy said.

"Well, I'm here if you need help,"

"Thanks, but I've put you in enough danger as it is," Tommy said.

"Tommy, I can help you, please," Kate said. "It'd be like old times."

"Yeah but you hated it."

"I didn't like being chased by those creepy mega-goons," Kate corrected him.

"Yeah, maybe," Tommy said. He turned around. "Hey, you guys coming?"

They nodded and started walking again.

"So, sorry about our date," Tommy said.

"It's okay. Maybe a rein check?" Kate asked.

"Sure. I'll call you," Tommy said.

"Okay great," Kate grinned and they got into the jeep to head home.
