Citizens(Singing): There's a face that we wear in the cold light of day. It's society's mask. It's society's way. And the truth is that it's all a façade... There's a face that we wear 'till the nighttime appears. And what's hiding inside behind all of our fears is our true self locked inside the façade... Every day... People, in their own sweet way... Like to add a coat of paint and be what they ain't! That's how our little-Game is played! Livin' like a masquerade, acting a bizarre charade... While playing the saint. But there's one thing I know and I know it for sure. This disease that we've got has got no ready cure... And I'm certain life is terribly hard. When your life's a façade!Look around you, I have found you cannot tell by lookin' at the surface what is lurkin' there beneath it... See that face, now over there... Now, I'm prepared to bet you what you see's not what you get-'Cause man's a master of deceit! So, what is the sinister secret? The lie he will tell you is true? It's that each man you meet on the street isn't one man but two! Nearly everyone you see like him an' her and you and me pretends to be a pillar of society... A model of propriety... Sobriety... And piety!Who shudders at the thought of notoriety! The ladies and gents here before you which none of them ever admits... They might have saintly looks but they're sinners and crooks! Hypocrite! Hypocrite! There are preachers who kill! There are killers who preach. There are teachers who lie! There are liars who teach. Take your pick, dear 'cause it's all a façade... If we're not one, but two. Are we evil or good? Do we walk the fine line that we'd cross if we could? Are we waiting-To break through the façade? One or two might look kinda-well-to-do. Ha! They're as bad as me and you. Right down to their boots!Right down to their boots! I'm inclined to think-Half mankind thinks the other half is blind wouldn't be surprised to find-They're all in cahoots! At the end of the day they don't mean what they say. They don't say what they mean, they will never come clean. And the answer- Is it's all a façade! Is it's all a façade! Man is not one, but two! He is evil and good. And he walks the fine line we'd all cross if we could! It's a nightmare we can never discard... So, we stay on our guard. But, we love the façade! What's behind the façade? Look behind the façade!

Marshall(Narrating): Yep, the city was starting to lose its marbles. It was so inevitable, people started thinking that the Willingham Annual Moonlight Ball would never happen. Ah, but Veronica Willingham wasn't going to let her family's traditions be marred by rumors. No siree, she was determined to have everything running smoothly. See, she was at the helm of a very special group of people who saw to it that dreams were either made or smashed! They were known as the Commonwealth Guild, and they were tough as nails-assuming you could convince them...(Emily is inside the Guild headquarters, along with several other people)

Receptionist: You had a great mindset, but I suppose you weren't idealistic. NEXT!

Emily: That's me.

Marshall(Narrating): Now, Emily's project was a scientific research experiment...

Recording Secretary: The Commonwealth Guild is now in session. William Billingsley, KBE, Chairman. His Grace, The Bishop of Bloomington. General Lord Gordon. The Right Honorable Sir Achilles Maxwell, Q.C. Lady Lorreta Beaconsfield. Lord Savage. The Order of business will be conducted by the Secretary to the Board of Governors, Mr. Zachary Stride.

Zachary: Proposition No. 929 - Presented by Ms. Emily Thompson. Bring her in, lads. (As he puts on his monocle, Emily gasps at finally meeting her father's murderer for the first time)

Marshall(Narrating): Thing is, that put her directly face to face with her father's killer. And that meant from here on out, things were about to go insane!

Gordon: First impressions aside, you're all talk and no result!

Bloomington: Yes. Forever asking us to endorse empty promises!

Achilles: What's all the mystery? Much ado about nothing, if you ask me...

Lorreta: You're the laughingstock of your profession and polite society! Girl, you have no idea what you're in for.

Zachary: Order! Order! Honestly, I know first impressions are important but let us tend to the matter at hand!

Emily: Distinguished Governors, I have glimpsed the future. Seen miracles that stun the mind and marvels only science can find to shape tomorrow for mankind. And I can show them to you if you wish me to. Friends, you're aware there are two sides to each of us... Good and evil, compassion and hate. If we could extract all the evil from each of us. Think of the world that we could create! A world without anger or violence or strife Where man wouldn't kill anymore! A world of compassion, where passion for life would banish the madness of war! I'm close to finding the key to duality. Chemical Formulae which could and would alter the patterns of man's personality guiding him either to evil or good! Weigh the potential, the great possibilities. Colleagues- dear friends, understand! We have a chance to make history here in our hand! Each of us is the embodiment of two distinct and opposing forces - Good and Evil - each fighting for supremacy inside us. If we could separate these two forces, we could control and ultimately eliminate all evil from mankind. My experiments with animals have led me to believe that the day is not far off when this separation will be possible. To achieve it, I must be allowed to try my formula on a living human being!

Bloomington: And what if you're right, Ms. Thompson? And you do manage to separate Good from Evil- What happens to the evil?

Emily(Singing): There are doomed, broken souls in a thousand asylums, I defy you to say you don't care if you can! In the name of compassion and medical science, I can save many lives if you give me one man!

Bloomington(Singing): I tell you now- the Church will never sanction it!

Guild: Sacrilege! Lunacy! Blasphemy! Heresy!

Achilles(Singing): You seem to be treading on dangerous ground. In legal terms, I'd say, extremely unsound!

Bloomington(Singing): The whole thing's un-Christian, barbaric and odd! You're playing with fire when you start to play God!(Zachary angrily takes his monocle off, also not liking her idea either)

Zachary: The Bishop speaks for all of us, when he says you're playing God! There's such a thing as ethics over which you ride rough-shod!(Singing)I've seen your type before, lass. Yes, I know what's it has done! But I judge from your behavior you can't tell the two apart!(Emily is shocked to hear that)

William(Singing): Miss, I've always encouraged this sort of enterprise and I've been hopeful that someone would succeed! But in the face of these powerful arguments, I see no choice but for you to concede!

Emily(Singing): I know my fate is yours to choose but if they win, the world will lose, I am on the brink of great success! I beg you, Governors, you must say "Yes!"(Veronica starts to stand up, but Lorreta sets her back down)

Lorreta(Singing): Dearest Emily, enough of this ranting, ma'am. This is a hospital, here to save lives!

Guild(Singing): Do you think we would let you play havoc with all the high principles for which it strives? Do you expect us to compromise all that we stand for indulging your dangerous games? How many rules should we break for your dubious aims?

Emily: Can't you see? I am not playing games!(Singing)Just give me the opportunity!

Gordon: This whole thing's too bizarre!

William: Open up your eyes and see!

Bloomington: This woman has gone too far!

Emily: Unless you listen to me...

Zachary: Miss, please watch your tone! Dammit, woman, can't you see?(Singing) You're on your own!

(In the reception area, everyone hears arguing)

Emily: If I ever needed further justification for my experiments, gentlemen, you have just provided it!(Singing)Just look at what has happened here! Mix anger with a touch of fear; The danger's all too crystal-clear-just look at you! Our darker side keeps breaking through; Observe it now - in me and you! The evil that all men can do must be controlled! I beg of you; I'll show you all it can be done! Here is a chance to take charge of our fate; Deep down you must know that tomorrow's too late! One rule of life we cannot rearrange. The only thing constant is change.(Spoken)The only thing constant...is change.

Zachary: Okay... Distinguished colleagues, your verdict, please. All those in favor say "Aye" All those opposed, "Nay"

Guild: Nay! Nay! Nay! Nay! Positively- Absolutely- Nay!

Zachary: Will, I know you've lost hope that someone would triumph tonight...

William: Zachary, see to it that this woman is out of our sight!

Zachary: You abstain, then. By five votes to none- with one abstention... Proposition 929 is rejected! Thank you for your time, madame.

Emily(Singing): All these precious years I've dedicated to this dream Now with a word they claim the power to deny me! Who are they to judge what I am doing? They know nothing of the endless possibilities I see! It's ludicrous I'm bound by their decision. Seems vision is a word they've never heard! If it mattered less, I'd treat it with derision It's absurd! And yet the fact remains; Those bastards hold the reins!

Zachary(Singing): I'm so sorry, dear Emily, what a really rotten shame! I so hope that what has happened won't destroy your precious name! But soon enough, you'll not survive-not long enough to justify! But there'll come a day, not so far away when you'll not only pay, you will pay all your life!

Marshall(Narrating): Yep, Emily once again found herself on the long way home. But this time, she wasn't focused on getting there...(To Emily as she passes by)Emily, what are you doing here?

Emily: I saw her... and then...

Marshall(Singing): Then you were turned away, love. What a shame, your dream seemed seldom fair and true.

Emily(Singing): I saw her!

Marshall(Singing): I know, but you were thrown away, love. What a mistake, seeing your potential turned to ash! But this delirium is not mysterious, my love. I have seen it before, and I know how frightening it can be! This delirium is far more out of your control... So, Emily, get a grip on your emotional control!

Emily(Singing): I know you're only being nice, but this pain is far too real! And if I never had the chance, man. I would spend it at her expense! You're only trying to assist, but there seems to be something you've missed! And this delirium is surely new to me, my love. I may not know it yet, but it's a sign of what I must do! This delirium is nothing I have ever known... So, stop telling me what I can and cannot do!

Marshall(Singing): I know there's stuff you can't handle, but you've got to see what you cannot think...

Emily(Singing): I know that you're trying to help, my love... But there's just no way around!

Both(Singing): And this delirium is seldom all it seems. We know so little and ponder so much! This delirium is what's holding our love back... But in the end, we all fall to its designs...!(They kiss)

Marshall(Narrating): Once again, she found herself in the same place she was before, but this time, she saw Lena there too.

Dr. Woodchuck: Just gather 'round and I'll elucidate on what goes on outside when it gets late. 'Long about midnight, the ghosts and banshees, they get together for their nightly jamboree. There're things with horns and saucer eyes-some with fangs about this size.

Woman #1: Some are fat.

Woman #2: And some are thin.

Creepy Man: And some don't even wear their skin!

Dr. Woodchuck: Ah, but you needn't worry, don't you fear. I've something that'll help you here...

Crowd(Singing): It's the Hyde-Tonic, a variety neurological slap! It's the Hyde-Tonic, it's not ironic...if you give it a try!

Dr. Woodchuck(Singing): You'll see more clearly-the sweet and the nasty...

Crowd(Singing): But darling, you needn't stress out at all! Because the Hyde-Tonic is far more than what you'd think.

Dr. Woodchuck: Now, if I haven't covered the side-effects, then there's something you should definitely hear. The first bell toll starts the entire shtick...

Man: The second one is also proof.

Woman: The third time you feel it, cruelty will come to you.

Crowd(Singing): But the fourth one is the worst of them all!

Dr. Woodchuck: Because when that fourth bell tolls, my friends...

Crowd(Singing): Your head starts sinking, and your brain shuts down!

Dr. Woodchuck(Singing): But there's no need to worry if you don't want to feel the rush. Otherwise, I wouldn't try it at all! Because there's a 50/50 chance...

Crowd(Singing): You may not make it out alive...!(Emily is impressed)

Franklin: Well, I knew my pals weren't kidding about you, girl.

Emily: Is that so?

Franklin: When things with you and that other guy start to crumble, you find me. Got that?

Emily: Maybe...(To Dr. Woodchuck)One bottle of Hyde-Tonic, if you please.

Dr. Woodchuck: Of course, Miss.(To the crowd)At least someone here wants to feel the rush.(The whole crowd laughs)

Man: The watchmen are coming! The watchmen are coming!

Lena: D'oh, I thought we'd have a chance to shake them off this time... Come on!(Everyone runs off, intending on losing the watchmen to confusion. Back at the Thompson household, things are more complicated than they appear to be)

Gene: Oh, God... This cannot be happening to me, Becca! They've never been this late before. Oh, I'll be lucky if the watchmen haven't caught them yet.

Becca: Listen to yourself, Gene. You would think this was their first time alone together. Tell me, were you this nervous when I came along?

Gene: Well, yes and no. It was different with your mother. After all, she did repay me for all I ever did for your entire family.

Lena(OS): Wow, bro. And here I thought you didn't have anyone to call your own.

Gene: Wha-Where have you two been?

Lena: We had a little encounter with the night watchmen, but it's all better now. So, do us a favor and calm down.

Gene: Don't tell me to calm down, sis. What were you thinking?

Lena: Oh, I don't know. Maybe your sisters aren't as important as the women you've been hanging out with!

Gene: Look, if I had a dollar for every time you criticized me about my relationships then I'd be more happier than you ever would!

Lena: That's right, take a look in the mirror and see all the other girls you've strung along, like anyone else you ever could!(They continue arguing, even as Emily is in her room)

Emily: Dear Diary; Dad was the only one who could keep us from breaking apart, and now he's dead. I finally met his killer today-she looked like she didn't care at all. But I. Know. She. KILLED HIM!(Slamming her fist on the cupboard)I don't think Marshall understands what I'm going through anymore, but I bet Franklin does. Maybe it's time to reconsider my entire life, but how should I do it?(Singing)Once upon a time, back there in Philadelphia, rules were clear and colors didn't fade. Once you found your happily ever after, your happily ever after always stayed. And then I journeyed here, made friends whom I could relate to. Then met a man who saw through those days... But was my ever after just temporary? How I miss that fairytale life. Where you wake each day and nothing's changed, and nobody doesn't feel... estranged. I thought I'd found a place where I could make things better, but all I did was change where I would fail. Oh, what do if I do if I don't belong where life can never be a fairytale? Where life can never be a fairy... But no, it can't be true, I could fly if I wanted to. Like a bird in the sky, if I believed I could fly, why, I'd fly! This is the moment! This is the day when I send all my doubts and demons on their way! Every endeavor I have made- ever-Is coming into play; Is here and now- today! This is the moment This is the time when the momentum and the moment are in rhyme! Give me this moment- This precious chance-I'll gather up my past and make some sense at last! This is the moment when all I've done- All the dreaming. Scheming and screaming become one! This is the day- See it sparkle and shine. When all I've lived for becomes mine! For all these years I've faced the world alone and now the time has come to prove to them I've made it on my own! This is the moment-My final test- Destiny beckoned, I never reckoned second Best! I won't look down, I must not fall! This is the moment the sweetest moment of them all! This is the moment! Damn all the odds! This day, or never I'll sit forever with the gods! When I look back, I will always recall moment for moment. This was the moment! The greatest moment of them all!(Soon enough, a Do not disturb sign is posted from outside her room. It is clear that Emily is working tirelessly to achieve her goals)Three fifty-eight a.m. It is done. I have injected 5 centiliters of the newly fused formula. A slight feeling of euphoria. Light-headedness. No noticeable behavioral differences."(Chuckles lightly)Now the die is cast! Nothing left to do. Time alone can prove my theories true...Show the world I-Oh... Dear God! What is this? Something is happening- I can't explain-(Singing)Something inside me- A breathtaking pain- Devours and consumes me and drives me insane...! Suddenly- Uncontrolled- Something is taking hold! Suddenly- Agony- Filling me! Killing me! Suddenly- Out of breath! What is this? Is this death?(She soon faints)
