It was a sunny day in Unikingdom. Master Frown stood on the rooftop of a tall building. He was anxious and sweat ran down on his forehead. His higher ups' words rang in his head that were said the day before.
"Obviously this plan does not guarantee Unikingdom is gonna be the dystopia we want it to be, but our job would be easier without her on the way."
He saw Princess Unikitty crystal clear, standing on a podium below him, all thanks to the sniper scope he looked through. Hawkodile stood next to her, the poor bodyguard had no idea what danger lurked close to them.
"A-are you sure I am the one fit for this job?"
"You are the one who seems to have an obsession with her. It would be an honor to you, right?"
She was hosting some party or festival, whatever, like always. She made a speech in front of a crowd, Master Frown could not hear her.
"But I never..."
"First time for everything."
His finger was on the trigger, he had a clear shot. Nothing could disturb this. Nothing but him. His heart raced.
"Yo dude, what is with the suitcase? We are going to Unikitty's party, not on a holiday."
"None of your business, Brock!"
All he had to do was just pull the trigger.
...
He did not pull it.
Unikitty finished her speech, probably it was about wishing the guests to enjoy themselves or whatever. She went among the crowd and everyone danced together with upbeat music. She was out of shot.
Master Frown let out a breath he did not know he held before. He put his firearm back into his suitcase and walked downstairs to leave the building. He felt tired despite not doing much all day, he even almost vomited and felt dizzy. He was confused, all of his life was about making Unikitty, one of the most optimistic beings in the land, as miserable as possible, yet he cannot kill her, even if it was as simple as taking candy from a baby. Brock asked him where he was, he lied to Brock about him needing the bathroom. He did nothing much in that party after that, he just stood alone in the corner, just letting everyone else have their fun.
"What are you doing?"
Master Frown got startled by the sudden voice next to him. He looked to see it was Hawkodile, with narrowed eyes.
"Um, nothing! Why asking?" Master Frown smiled nervously.
"I saw you doing nothing but standing there this whole time, but I know you plan something big to sabotage our event." Hawkodile clutched his fists. "If it was up to me you would never step a foot into this kingdom, so you should be thankful for the princess." He towered above Master Frown threateningly.
Master Frown gulped and nodded.
"No funny business. I am keeping my eyes on you." Hawkodile finished and left him alone.
Master Frown glanced at his suitcase he hid below one of the buffet tables, that was next to him. He could barely look at it. An uncomfortable feeling hurt his chest but he ignored it. He continued to stand alone until the party was over and went home.
Master Doom was unamused. She sat behind her table and Master Frown stood in front of her in the doomlord HQ.
"I give you one simple task and you still screw it up!" She scolded Master Frown. "At the very least you could have done something else to ruin their celebration, like dip your food after already taking a bite, or popping some balloons. Yet according to your report you did nothing?"
Master Frown was silent, he hung his head in shame.
"I thought this was gonna be easy for you, considering your amount of hatred you have towards her for some reason." She rubbed her temples. "This is a really unusual behavior from you. I guess I have to hire someone else for the job."
Master Frown looked up at her. "W-what?"
"Obviously you are unable to do this flawlessly. I should have hired a professional from the beginning."
"But who?"
"None of your concerns. Soon Princess Unikitty will be no more after her next celebration."
Master Frown lied on his bed that night, he could not sleep due to the uneasiness in his chest. Was it guilt? But his boss decided to give the job to someone else, not him, he or she was gonna be the one who kills her. So there should be nothing to feel guilty about. Not like there was anything he could do to stop it.
Right?
...
Soon Brock and Master Frown got invited by Unikitty for another party, and they both came. Brock was playing with some guests, while Master Frown planned to climb the same building where he was last time. He remembered his higher ups saying that roof was the best for a hitman to work from, so there was a big chance that the new hitman might be there. Unikitty would not believe him if he told her or any of her friends, so he had no other choice. He did not know exactly what his plan was. He wished he had the firearm that was given to him for the mission, but got taken away after his failure. He did not wanna kill anyone, but he thought maybe just injuring the hitman would be enough to stop the whole thing.
Am I just gonna beat them up or what?
He got snapped out of his thoughts by a voice behind him. "Hi, Master Frown!"
He got startled and looked behind him, it was Unikitty. "Uh, what do you want?" He tried to sound casual.
"I just wanted to say I am glad you came. Oh, and thanks!" She smiled.
"...Thanks for what?"
"For not doing anything bad in my previous party. You did not seem to cause any trouble in my kingdom since then. That is... a really unusual behavior from you, but I appreciate it."
Master Frown froze. She was right, it has been around a week since then and he did not bother to even set a foot into Unikingdom. Time seemed to go faster to him ever since his worries regarding Unikitty's safety.
He shook his head. "B-because I was kinda losing inspiration. Do not get used to it!"
Unikitty frowned and held her ears back. "Oh... I just thought you might be changing for the better."
"Well, I am not. So you better..."
He froze again after seeing a slightly moving, red dot on her forehead. His eyes went wide.
"What?" Unikitty asked, raising an eyebrow.
There was no time to think.
"GET AWAY!"
He pushed Unikitty to the ground and he took her place where she was milliseconds ago. Neither of them or the crowd around them had time to react. Master Frown heard a shot. Then he felt sudden pain on his back. He screamed and cursed before hitting the ground. He closed his eyes and heard panicked screams around him, being muffled by a constant ringing in his ears. He felt someone shaking his body. He opened his eyes but his vision was blurry due to his tears. But he could still see a blurry, pink figure above him.
"Master Frown?! Frown!" Unikitty's screamed.
The cold pain on his back did not feel any better. He just wanted all this to end. He closed his eyes again and lost consciousness.
Master Frown woke up in a hospital bed. His mouth was dry. He looked around to see he was in a white hospital room, there was a window that showed it was daytime. His dark blue cloak was gone and wore a patient gown instead. Next to his bed's left was Unikitty, her fur turned blue, sitting on a chair, her eyes were closed but she was awake, she sobbed and sniffed onto her paws.
"Unikitty?" He groaned.
She opened her eyes and looked at him, her cheeks were seen to be stained by her tears. Her fur turned back into its pink self.
"You are awake!" She cheered and hugged him.
He felt her warm embrace and her heartbeat. It felt good, but he could not keep his mouth shut and he moaned in pain. At that she let him go, much to him not wanting the hug to end.
"Oops. Sorry!"
"I-it does not matter... What happened?"
"You saved me from being shot. Hawkodile was quick to find the shooter and we questioned him, he told us he was sent by the doomlords. He is in prison now."
He nodded, understanding. He looked under his gown to see his upper body was bandaged.
"The doctors said it is nothing too bad. Just wait for a week and you will be ok." She told him.
He nodded again.
There was silence.
...
"Um, thanks for saving me!" Said Unikitty.
Master Frown said nothing and averted his gaze from her.
Unikitty spoke again. "So we know he got hired by the doomlords. Do you happen to know anything about that?"
Master Frown sighed. "No, I... Actually, yeah. I knew they were planning this."
Unikitty gave a sympathetic look. "Does that mean you are in trouble now?"
"Perhaps. I dunno." He did not really care if he was honest
Master Frown was surprised by her grabbing his hand. He looked back at her.
She had a sad smile. "Well, whatever happens I will be there for you. It is the least I could do. I am so sorry this happened."
He shrugged.
"Oh! I have gotta tell the others you are awake. I will be back soon!" She stood up and walked towards the door. Before going outside she looked back at him over her shoulder. "Thanks again. You are a true hero."
He just looked after her. He smiled despite the pain on his back, it was nothing compared to the amount of relief he felt in his chest. Doing a good deed hurt, but it also felt good afterwards. He imagined if the uneasiness in his chest would get worse if he just did what they ordered him to do. Maybe being good was not so bad after all.
