Chapter 5
Rick took her to his office in the workshop using his now-famous Snow Maneuver. "I could get used to that." Rick loved that he could do that.
"It might take a little while for me. I think it gave me a headache." Kate rubbed her forehead. "So what are we doing?"
"I'm going to work on the Naughty and Nice list." Rick moved to open one of a dozen boxes. Even the boxes had a Christmas motif.
"That's the Naughty and Nice list? There has to be what, thousands and thousands of pages?" Kate was overwhelmed by just how big it was. She picked up one of the papers and saw nothing but a series of names. "How do you decide if one person is naughty while another is nice?" Kate kept looking at the list on that page.
"I just do," Rick said with a shrug. "Must be a Santa thing."
Kate shook her head. "I don't think I can help you with that." She put the paper back in the box. "This could take forever."
"And that's what has me worried," Rick told her. "Another thing is this is January. What if a kid is nice now but naughty later? And vice versa."
"Maybe you should wait for later," Kate suggested. She didn't know what to say.
"I thought about that, except there are so many kids to evaluate. I might need the time to do them all." Rick shrugged again, still not knowing what to do.
"What else do you do?" Kate asked. "Maybe I can help with that."
"I also study the Maintenance logs and determine what needs repair. You could look at that." Rick really could use her help.
"I can do that. Where are the logs?" Kate was more than willing to help. Rick just pointed at a series of books. "All of these?" Kate didn't believe it. Maybe she should have kept her big mouth shut. Still, she picked up the first book and saw it was a log for her dormitory. Intrigued, she started at the beginning. "What if I find something that needs work?"
"Make a note of it and assign a team from Maintenance to fix it. That's after you make sure that that team is available," Rick responded.
Kate nodded, sat down, and began studying the book and making notes. She was amazed at the things she was learning about her own dormitory building. She assigned a team to repair a couple of problems.

Rick had had enough of the Naughty and Nice list, and since it was lunchtime, he decided it was time to stop and eat. Kate was relieved at the break in work.
They walked to the cafeteria together, hand in hand. It was only when they reached the line and picked up a tray that they released each other's hand.

"I learned more about my own dormitory than I ever thought possible. I did find two problems that needed attention. I assigned a team to repairs," Kate said and took a bite. "How was your Naughty and Nice list?"
"Boring, like really boring. It's just name after name. I had to read each name and decide if they were naughty or nice. It was eerie, Kate. I just...knew. It was like nothing I had ever experienced before. I knew," Rick told her.
"Strange," Kate agreed.

Lunch was over, and they walked back to his office. Once there, Rick stopped her from sitting in her chair. He slipped his arms around her. "I've wanted to do this all day." Rick tilted his head and kissed her.
At first, Kate was taken aback, but she quickly recovered and returned his kiss.
When they broke from the kiss, Kate's eyes sparkled and she smiled. "Do that again."

Kate was back at work and working on another building when Abagail made her presence known. "What is she doing here?" Abagail demanded, looking at Santa.
"She's helping me with Maintenance. I asked for her help." Rick frowned. "Is that a problem?"
"She should be doing the work she is assigned to do," Abagail snapped.
"But it's my day off," Kate said, looking from Santa to Abagail and back to Santa.
"This work is assigned to you, Santa," Abagail said, clenching her jaw. "You should be doing it."
"I delegated. What's your problem?" Rick didn't see an issue.
"The problem is that she is doing the work assigned to you. Finish what you are doing, Kate, and then leave. Leave the work to Santa. It. Is. Not. Your. Job." Abagail turned on her heel and stomped off.
"Strange," Rick muttered. He still didn't get it. But she was gone, allowing Kate to get back to work.

It was nearly 3 o'clock when they both quit. It was two hours early for Kate, so she didn't mind. Together, hand in hand, they used Rick's Snow Maneuver and went to the grade school, where they stood outside waiting for Alexis.
"That still gives me a headache," Kate complained.
"You'll get used to it." He kissed her cheek just as Alexis came rushing out the door.
"KATE, DADDY!" They were both here! Alexis was overjoyed to see that her two most favorite people were waiting for her. She ran toward them and hugged them both.
"And how was school, Pumpkin?" Rick queried.
"It was great!" Alexis shouted.

"Come on home, and we'll talk about it." Rick held hands with Alexis while Kate went with them.

"She can stay as long as she wishes. But she has a home to go to," Rick reminded her.
"Okay." Alexis was downcast. She so wanted Kate to stay.

Wide-eyed, Alexis looked at her dad. "Can Kate tuck me in?"

"We had driven to the hotel, so we drove all the way home to get Monkey Bunky." Rick shook his head. "Lost an entire day. I nearly fell asleep on the road. Thankfully, I didn't."
"That's sweet." Kate touched his hand. "You're a such good father."
Rick chuckled. "I did it because Alexis wouldn't go to sleep without it."
"That's still sweet," Kate insisted. "Can I help with anything?"
"No, no, just sit there, relax, and look pretty," Rick told her.
Kate smiled, pleased that he thought she was pretty. She thought every woman wanted someone to think they were pretty.
Kate brought up something that she wanted to talk about with him. "I don't understand Abagail at all."
"Neither do I," Rick concurred. "I have a theory about that. She's in charge of all of the Elves. But Santa is in total charge, in my opinion. She didn't tell me about the Snow thing, so what else hasn't she told me?"
"Do you think it's because you're new?" Kate asked.
"Perhaps." Rick finished cleaning up and joined Kate. "Ready for another date?"
Kate beamed at him and nodded. "On my next day off." And she kissed him.

She didn't see him at lunch the next day. She wasn't too upset. After all, he could be busy.
She made it to her dorm room and realized she missed him terribly. She didn't want to be one of those women, but she couldn't help it. Then out of nowhere, it snowed, and there he stood.
"What kept you?" She looked at him with a face that said she was angry with him. She soon let that look fade away, and she kissed him. She wrapped her arms around his neck. "I'm ready."
It snowed, and she found herself in his living room again. "KATE!" Alexis knew her dad had gone to get her. She was up and hugged her.
"I'll go get dinner ready and leave you two to talk." Rick gave her a quick kiss and strolled into the kitchen.
Alexis did most of the talking as she told Kate all about her day at school. That was until Rick called them for dinner.
Kate sat down; she liked her little family. It was just Rick and Alexis, but it was enough.
