Chapter 6
Kate sat with Alexis and listened to her chatter ceaselessly. She never gave her a chance to say a thing. Right up to the moment when Rick said dinner was ready.
Alexis continued to talk during dinner, never letting Kate get in a word.
It was only after dinner that she slowed down. "Can we play a game?" Alexis asked hopefully.
"Sure, do we have a game?" Kate asked.
"This is the North Pole, we have every game made," Rick replied.
Kate rolled her eyes at that. "What game do you want to play, sweetie?"
Alexis got up and ran upstairs to her room. "Do you have any idea what game she wants to play?" Kate asked Rick, but he just shook his head.
Alexis came running back downstairs and handed Kate a deck of cards. "Exploding Kitty?" Kate raised an eyebrow. "All right, how do you play?" And Alexis explained the game in great detail.

Kate won both games. "You cheated," Rick grumbled.
She took exception to that. "I did not cheat," she said hotly.
"Come on, Alexis," Kate said. "It's off to bed with you. We'll leave Rick the cheater to himself."
Now the shoe was on the other foot, and this time Rick took exception to being called a cheater. "I didn't cheat, I never cheat!"
Kate helped Alexis into her pajamas, got her into bed, and gave her Monkey Bunky. "You know, I made one of these today. If you want a replacement…"
Alexis clutched her Monkey Bunky as tight as she could. "NO!"
"Okay, okay. I was just saying." Kate tried to reassure her. "I won't take Monkey Bunky away from you. I would never do that."
But Alexis stared at her like she was evil incarnate. "Goodnight, Alexis." Kate kissed her forehead and decided not to sing to her.
Downstairs she saw Rick was in the kitchen cleaning up. "I think Alexis is mad at me. I told her I made a monkey just like hers, and if she wanted one, all she had to do was ask. Then she clutched Monkey Bunky and looked at me like I was the devil himself."
"Oh, you did not!" Rick exclaimed. "Oh, Kate, you're marked for death. Better kiss me quick since it'll be your last time."
Kate stared at him like he had lost his mind. "Really, Rick?"
"Eh, it was worth a shot. Seriously though, don't mess with Monkey Bunky. I did that once, and she didn't talk to me all day," Rick said. "She thought it was a long time, but it was just one day."
"Lucky me." Kate felt terrible. She had Alexis mad at her, and she felt bad about that.
"I wouldn't worry about it. She'll have forgotten all about it and ask me if you're here by tomorrow morning. You do plan to be here?" Rick asked hopefully.
Kate bit her lower lip. "Yes." She wanted to make love to him again.

Kate was awake, and Rick was asleep. She was resting on his chest again and listening to the beating of his heart.

Meanwhile, Rick got Alexis up and into the tub for a bath. Afterward, she brushed her teeth and dressed herself in the clothes her daddy laid out for her. Then he took her to school.
Rick went into his office and worked on the Naughty and Nice list. Abagail stormed in and interrupted him. "Where is Kate? She isn't here."
"No, she isn't, it's not her day off. What exactly do you have against her?" Rick waited impatiently for her answer.
"I don't have anything against her," Abagail insisted. "You're assigned the work, not her, so you should be doing it, is all."
Rick wasn't buying it. She had something against Kate, but he didn't say anything. "Good, that's good. Now I'm busy and have a lot to do, so if you'll excuse me..."
Abagail stared at him momentarily, then left. She would find out one way or the other, starting with Kate.
Rick uses his Snow Maneuver and ended up next to Kate. "Rick! What are you doing here?"
"You need to come with me." Rick touched her and made it snow, leaving behind a confused Bridgett. Kate's Rick was Santa!?
Kate found herself in Rick's office. "What's going on?"
"Abagail dropped by for a visit. She doesn't like you, Kate. I really don't trust her, so we need a plan."
They put their heads together and they came up with a plan. Then Rick took her back to her station, kissed her, and made it snow again.
Bridgett couldn't believe what she just saw. "Your Rick is Santa?"
"Yes, please don't be mad." Kate didn't want her best friend to be upset with her.
"Mad? Why should I be mad? I'm over-the-moon happy for you. Your boyfriend is Santa!" No, Bridgett wasn't mad at her. The exact opposite, actually. "That is so cool."
"We think Abagail is mad at me for being Rick's girlfriend," Kate said quietly, looking over her shoulder to make sure no one else heard her.
"Screw Abagail!" Bridgett said sharply. "Your boyfriend is Santa, and he's in charge around here. Abagail is only in charge of us Elves."
"Really, Rick's in charge? That's interesting." Kate had a faraway look on her face. "Very interesting"

Kate was almost done with her day's work when Abagail showed up.
"We need to talk. I have heard that you are dating Santa. Is that true?" Abagail asked Kate.
"Yes," Kate confirmed. "It's true."
"It is against the rules. You will stop as of this minute," Abagail ordered.
"What?" Kate was taken aback. "Why? I like Rick."
"Whether you like him or not is irrelevant. Those are the rules, and I expect you to abide by them. Immediately." Abagail turned and stomped off, leaving Kate standing there not believing what just happened. It ruined everything!
Bridgett had overheard every word. "I don't know whether she's lying or not, but I would talk to Santa if I were you. He's the one in charge around here, not her."
"You really think so?" Kate asked, her voice quivering.
"If you want to keep dating Santa, you have got to tell him, Kate. Work something out," Bridgett urged her.

Kate knocked on the front door of Rick's house. She wasn't surprised to see Alexis answering the door. "KATE!" Alexis hugged her. She was so happy to see her!
"Hi, Alexis. Where's your father?"
"Upstairs, I'll get him." Alexis turned and ran upstairs to find her daddy.
Rick came down the stairs. "Hi, Kate." One look at her told him something was wrong. He sat down next to her and held her hand. "What's wrong?"
Kate took a deep breath, but she was still shaking. "I had a visit from Abagail. She ordered me to stop dating you. She said that it was against the rules."
"What? I've never heard that. Just who am I supposed to date if I can't date an Elf? This place is full of Elves." Rick didn't understand.
"I don't know, Rick. But that's what she said." Kate got to her feet. "I should go, Abagail is probably watching the house."
"NO! Don't leave. We'll work out something to tell her. Please stay," Rick pleaded.
"I want to, but Abagail is in charge of all of the Elves, and I'm an Elf. But Bridgett said something. She said you, as Santa, were in charge. Maybe you can talk to her." Kate had hope.
"Oh, I'll do more than talk to her. Can't date you, my ass," he muttered. "Let me think." Rick paced as he tried to come up with a plan. Kate sat there and waited for him to think of something.
"Why didn't I think of this before!? If I'm in charge, it should work. I want you to go home and leave everything to me." Rick kissed her, and she kissed him back.
It meant no sex tonight, and Kate didn't like that, but she knew this was important. Kate took a deep breath and got up, followed by Rick.
He wrapped his arms around her. "Trust me, Kate. I have an idea." Rick kissed her and watched her walk out of the door.
Alexis had heard everything, but she hadn't said a single word. She knew something was wrong, except she didn't know what it was exactly. Then she broke her silence. "Daddy, what's wrong?"
"Never fear, Pumpkin. I have a plan," Rick told her. "But I can't leave you alone, and right now, I can't leave you with Kate. So either you come with me, or I wait till you're in school."
"I can come." It meant helping Kate and Kate was important to her.
Rick nodded, touched her, and made it snow. He arrived just outside of an apartment. Rick knocked, and someone came to the door. "Hello, Lucy. We need to talk."

Satisfied with the results and learning from Lucy that there was no such rule, Rick was pleased with his plan and left. He made it snow on himself and Alexis. Now he just needed to wait for tomorrow.
Rick made dinner, but he didn't eat much of it. Nor did Alexis. Alexis was silent. She was just old enough to understand they were talking about Kate.
Rick tucked Alexis into bed. She wanted Kate to do it, but her daddy doing it was still nice. "Daddy? I'm scared."
"Don't worry, the plan will work. I hope." He whispered that last part. "Go to sleep, sweetheart. You have Monkey Bunky." He kissed her forehead and left her bedroom. But Rick didn't know what to do with himself.
Meanwhile, Kate sat at her desk and talked to her roommate. "Kate, what's wrong? You're moping," she said, having noticed it.
"There's nothing wrong." Then Kate rethought that. Everyone was going to find out eventually, so she might as well tell her. "I'm dating Rick, otherwise known as Santa," Kate began to explain.
"NO! Really?" she exclaimed.
"Except Abagail found out about it and told me to stop dating him. That it was against the rules." Kate realized she was more upset about that than she thought.
She thought about that. "And just who is Santa supposed to date? Everyone here is an Elf. I say date him and screw what Abagail says!"
"I can't! She's in charge of all of us Elves. Rick says he has a plan, but I don't know what that is." Kate desperately hoped that his plan worked, whatever it was.
"I still think you should ignore what Abagail thinks, but that's just me. You do what you think is right. …But I'm happy for you. You're dating Santa." She got up and hugged Kate from behind.

Rick took Alexis to school. "What about Kate?" Alexis asked.
"We should have an answer by the time you get out of school. Think good thoughts." Rick watched her enter the building.
Now came the hard part of his plan. Rick was in his office inside the workshop. "Lucy, you're right on time. Are you ready for this?"
"I hope so. Abagail has great power and has held it for a long time," Lucy said. She was just a bit nervous, though.
"After this encounter, you will have that power, not her. I guess I better get this going." Rick took a deep breath and made it snow.
He appeared right next to Abagail. "You need to come with me." Rick touched her, not waiting for her to say anything, and he made it snow.
Then he arrived in his office, and Lucy was nowhere to be seen as was planned.
"What is this, Santa?" Abagail demanded.
"I'm told you ordered Kate to stop dating me. That it was against the rules." Rick waited to see what she had to say.
Abagail stood firm. "Yes, I did, and it certainly is against the rules."
"I see. Never mind that everyone here is an Elf, meaning it leaves me with no one to date." He raised his hand as she was about to speak. "I did some digging, and it turns out there is no such rule. You just made it up. I want to know why," Rick thundered.
"I don't need to explain myself to you! I am head of all Elves, and I've been here for far longer than you have. And yes, there is such a rule. Now, if that is all, I have somewhere to be." Abagail turned to leave.
"Lucy, come in here, please." Rick watched Lucy enter, and she stood near his desk. Rick glared at Abagail. "You leave me with little choice, Abagail. Effective immediately, you are fired. I'm giving Lucy your job starting now. And since I'm Santa and in charge here, that's how it will be!"
Abagail's grasp on her temper began to unravel. "You can't do that! I am in charge of all of the Elves. ME!"
"Don't make this any harder than it already is. You're fired, and Lucy has a new job...yours," Rick said coldly.
"She's in charge? She doesn't know how to do anything. She knows nothing!" Abagail asserted.
"She knows enough. You're fired!"
Abagail was about ready to pop. Rick reached out, took hold of her arm, and made it snow. Together they ended up in the hospital where the doctor was ready and waiting. "She's all yours, Doctor Stiers," Rick said, wanting her off his hands.
The doctor motioned for a nurse, and she stepped in and injected Abagail with something.
"Take good care of her, Doctor," Rick told him.
"We will, Santa. When we're done, she will remember none of this. I'm just sorry it had to come to this."
"So am I," Rick said regretfully. "Word that Abagail is no longer in charge of all Elves will spread like wildfire, I'm sure."
"Of that, I have no doubt," Stiers agreed. Together he and the nurse escorted Abagail to a room.
Rick made it snow and he arrived, finding himself standing next to Lucy. "It's done. Make me proud, Lucy."
"I will do my best. I need to start with a message to the Elves. Thank you for trusting me, Santa. I won't let you down. As for dating Kate, I know of no reason why you can't continue."
"Thank you. And Kate thanks you. I'll leave you to your job. I have work to do." Rick dismissed her. And she left to start her new job.

Kate was at her station, busily cutting out pieces for stuffed animals. Suddenly, everyone stopped, and it was so quiet they could have heard a pin drop. "My name is Lucy, and I'm in charge now. Abagail has been relieved of her duties per Santa's request. For now, all rules apply. But I will be reviewing each and every one of those rules. I will be talking to each of you eventually. For now, just remember that my name is Lucy, and I'm in charge." Then she moved on to a new location.
That started an immediate buzz. "Wow!" Bridgett exclaimed, still not believing it.
Lucy stopped right in front of Kate. "The rule regarding you not dating Santa does not apply. I've never heard of such a rule and can find no evidence it ever existed. Just be nice to him, that's all I ask." And without another word, Lucy left.
Kate stood there in awe. Flabbergasted would be more accurate.
Bridgett hurried over to Kate and hugged her. "You do know what this means, don't you? You can keep dating Santa. I'm so happy for you!"
Speechless, Kate stood there. What had just happened? Was this Rick's plan?
Bridgett gave her friend's hand a gentle squeeze. "You need to find him when it's time for lunch. You really do, Kate."

Kate entered the cafeteria and didn't even bother to get in line for food. Yes, she was hungry, but she was hungry for something else. She walked around looking for Rick. The place was big, and it was filling up fast. Except, Kate didn't see him anywhere. So she finally got in line to get something to eat.
She wasn't in line long when she heard someone say, "Hi, Kate."
Kate spun around and saw Rick. She launched herself at him, not caring who saw her. Overjoyed, she slipped her arms around him, and Rick embraced her, drawing her close.
Kate liked the feeling of being his, but she needed answers. "What did you do?"
Rick shrugged, downplaying what he did. "It was simple. I fired Abagail and hired Lucy. Problem solved."
"And we can date now?" Kate asked. She wanted to make sure.
"We can do a whole lot more than that." Then Rick kissed her and kept on kissing her.
The room became quiet, not that those two noticed. They were too busy kissing. Stopping for a moment to breathe, Rick caressed her cheek and brushed her lips with his. The room erupted into applause!
Kate blushed and tried to hide her face against his chest. "I think our secret is out," Rick murmured and kissed her again.
