Dean's POV
All I want after this is over is a glass of whiskey and a slice of cherry pie.
And a bacon cheeseburger. With hot and crispy french fries.
Seriously, when did everything go straight to hell?
Not long after gathering information about Randy, Sam and I decided we needed to drive to Maryland to find Randy. It was inconvenient that Maggie was clear across the country, but we agreed that Cas would stay with her.
What we weren't expecting when we arrived at Randy's apartment posing as federal agents was that he would be armed. And dangerous. And also maybe a little psychotic.
We barely got through introducing ourselves before he took off through the house, barricading himself in his bedroom and shooting shotgun rounds through the door, nearly hitting Sam. One bullet did end up grazing his right arm, but it was just a scratch, really. Sammy would be fine.
As we'd run through the house, we noticed books, articles, and journals lying open, spread throughout his living room. His kitchen was filthy. Half empty bottles, pizza boxes with rotting food, and overflowing trash bags left the whole place stinking. I didn't get to look at what he'd been studying closely, but I knew some of those books had to do with demonology.
We'd found a way to get through the barricaded door without getting shot, but he'd jumped out the window onto the fire escape, running away. We chased him for a long time before we ended up on a dusty back road where there was an intersection.
As we caught our breaths, that dirty bastard had summoned a friggin' demon!
A demon! We just wanted to talk to the guy!
The demon had used its power to drag us closer to where the two of them stood.
A tall woman with black hair pulled back into a bun glared with blazing red eyes at the two of us.
Deftly, she used her power to pin us to the ground, the invisible force barely giving me enough leeway to suck in air.
She knelt in front of where Sam and I were being pressed into the Earth.
"Well, well, well, if it isn't the infamous Winchester brothers. I knew it was going to be a good night."
A manic cackle left her lips.
"I can't wait to have my fun with the two of you. But first," she got back to her feet to address Randy.
"Randall. To what do I owe pleasure?"
Randy stood, just out of my line of vision. I could only make out his boots as he nervously shifted his weight from one foot to another.
"These guys c-came after m-me. And I thought maybe…m-m-maybe this deal wasn't such a good idea."
I heard the demon "tsk" a few times before addressing Randy.
"Hate to break it to you, Randy, but a demon deal is binding. There's no going back on it now. And these guys? Don't let them scare you. I'll take care of them in just a minute."
"Don't listen to her, Randy!" Sam shouted from where he was pinned next to me.
Suddenly, the demon used her power to pick Sam up off of the ground and choke him. I could hear him struggling to get air. I turned my head and saw his feet dangling and spasming under the stress of being choked.
"HEY!" I shouted. "Put my brother down, NOW." I ordered. Maybe if I could distract her, she would lose focus.
"Awww, Dean. That's really sweet of you. The others weren't kidding about your big-brother hero complex."
Just as swiftly as I'd been pinned to the ground, I was picked up and was levitating next to my brother, who seemed to be getting air now.
The demon turned towards Randy, now, eyes blazing red.
"Now, I was busy when you summoned me, Randall. And you bring me here with the Winchester brothers? What exactly were you thinking?" Her voice was low and her teeth gritted, irritation lacing every word.
"I-I-I thought you could help me…." Randy stuttered.
"Help you?! I am not some knight in shining armor, Randall. I'm a businessman. Well," she glanced down at her vessel, "businesswoman."
"But-but-but these guys… they're going to kill me. I know it. I can tell. I thought you said I had ten more years!" Randy whimpered.
Damn straight I'm gonna kill you, you friggin' idiot.
"You have ten years before my hell hounds drag you down to the pits of Hell, you imbecile. If you die before then, that's your own damn fault." She shouted.
This was a pickle. I had an angel blade tucked into my utility jacket, and I know Sam had one on him too, but unless Sam or I could break the force being used on us, the blades were useless. I thought quickly about starting an exorcism, however, without a devil's trap, she could use her power to stop us from speaking or just smoke out from her vessel. The only play we had was to turn the demon and Randall against each other, which, frankly, wasn't going to be all that difficult. If we could get her to use the power on him, or if he could somehow distract her enough to let one of us go, we might have a chance at getting out of here.
As if reading my mind, Sam spoke up.
"She's a demon, Randy! You can't trust her!"
"Wh-what?" Randy said, sniffing and wiping his nose with his sleeve.
"Shut up, Winchester!" The demon shouted using her power to choke Sam again.
I chimed in now, picking up where Sam left off.
"Why are you doing this, Randy? Maggie thought you loved her."
The demon put both of her hands up now, channeling all of her power into silencing and holding down the Winchester brothers.
"Of course. I loved her. I-I do still love her! But she rejected me! And I-I-I had to do it! It was the only way…"
I grit my teeth, despite the pain and pressure on my throat and I grunted as I asked, "The…..only….way…..to…what?!"
The pressure intensified and black spots danced across my vision.
"To break my family's curse!" Randy was pacing now, back and forth behind the demon that was pinning me and Sam.
Through the blurriness and the black spots I noticed a smirk on the face of the demon. She was enjoying this. The only reason Sam and I were alive was because she wanted us to be for some reason.
Sam spoke next, grunting out a reply, "She's…..a….demon…."
"Don't you think I know that?! My grandmother tried to break this curse years ago. My family has endured generations of heartache and loss because of some stupid curse. If I could end it, then maybe others in the future wouldn't have to suffer the same fate."
I tried to speak, but fatigue had set in. My eyes were fluttering as my vision blurred.
Suddenly, the pressure was lifted and I fell to the ground next to Sam.
I focused on trying to suck in lungfuls of air, totally oblivious to what was happening now with the demon and Randy.
"This is where it gets good. I should've brought some popcorn with me." The demon said sarcastically. She stepped away from all of us before she turned around, crossing her arms.
"You know, it really was so easy to take advantage of you. You were so eager to be the savior of your family. Too bad you didn't bother doing your homework." She remarked.
"What are you talking about?" Randy shouted.
I blinked away the spots in my vision. I looked over at Sam and saw that he seemed to have recovered a little quicker than me. His eyes were locked onto the demon and his fingers were wrapped around the hilt of his angel blade. I got to my feet and walked away from Sam, hopefully drawing attention away from him. My hands went up, hoping to placate the demon and keep her from pinning me to the ground again.
"Curses are spells, Randy. It would've been placed on your family by a witch. The only way to break that curse would be if your family line died out. Or, if you found a witch powerful enough to break the curse." I explained.
I wiped the dirt from my hands, still keeping them in plain sight. The demon smirked, arms crossed, clearly happy with the devastation playing out on Randy's face.
"What are you saying?" Randy said. He took two steps backwards and the demon pointed her finger at him, curling it towards her and dragging him right back to where he was standing.
"How do you know she broke the family curse, Randy?" I asked. I glanced over at the demon. Behind her, Sam had quietly risen to his feet, blade concealed in the sleeve of his flannel, now.
"She-She said she did it! She said the only way was to…was to…" Randy was visibly shaking now. He carded his fingers through his hair as tears welled up in his eyes.
"Once again, Randy, this bitch," I pointed to the demon who just grinned wider in return, "is a freaking demon. Demons lie, Randy."
"Here it comes…" the demon said, outright laughing now.
"Don't demons know how to do magic?!" Randy cried, incredulous.
"Some do. Yeah. Others…" I looked over at the demon again.
She picked up her chin as she responded.
"Others just want to have a little fun."
I watched as the color ran away from Randy's face.
"No. We had a deal. We– you told me that you'd break my family's curse!"
"There was never a curse to break!" the demon chuckled to herself.
"Of course there was! My parents, my grandmother!" Randy had fallen to his knees now.
"Your grandmother broke your little family curse. She was lucky. Found herself a demon who did know a little magic. Your parents never loved each other. They stayed together because of you. When they died, they were grateful." The demon spat the words out at Randy who dropped his head into his hands.
After a few moments, he spoke, softly, "Why?"
"Because it was fun. Because I could. Because I'm a demon. What did you expect?"
Her words were harsh, but she continued as Randy sat in silence, staring at her with red-rimmed eyes.
"Well, this has been fun. But, I believe I have some torturing to do. Don't want to be late."
"You son of a -" Randy called before she snapped her fingers. He lunged in her direction and I got in his way, pushing him back.
"You lied to me! What about Maggie?! Huh? How can I stop this? Stop her from dying?"
He pushed and fought against me but I held him back. I knew if I let him get close, she'd hurt him. And hey, maybe he deserved it for being so monumentally stupid but… the added chaos wasn't going to help with anything.
The momentary shuffle between Randy and I gave Sam an opportunity to drop the angel blade into his hand and lunge forward to plunge the blade into the demon. She must've sensed movement behind her because she darted to her left, just out of Sam's reach. The blade sliced against her arm with a flash of blue, but it wasn't enough to kill her.
I shoved Randy to the ground and pulled out my own angel blade, turning to help.
But it was too late. The demon, using her good arm to staunch the bleeding, nodded her chin in our direction, using her power to once again choke and overpower all three of us.
"You dug this grave, now you have to lie in it." She shouted at Randy. "There's nothing that can save your precious Maggie, now. You should've thought about it before you made a deal. Now, I can't hurt you, but I can have plenty of fun with these two." She nodded towards me and Sam. "So, get out of here. Don't ever summon me again. I'll see you in ten years."
With that, she snapped her fingers and Randy was gone, evidently having been teleported elsewhere.
The demon, still holding us midair in her vice-like grip, pulled us towards her. I watched as she patted Sam down, taking his angel blade, pistol, cell phone, and army knife from his pockets. She then did the same for me, taking pleasure in pushing all of our weapons out of our reach.
Those black spots were dancing around in my vision again. I don't know why I didn't think of it before, but I dropped my head, feigning having passed out. I could hear Sam start calling my name in panic.
"Dean? Dean!? Hey, hey, hey… DEAN! What did you do to him?!" Sam shouted at the demon.
"Relax, big boy. Gotta admit, I'm a little disappointed. He passed out before all the fun began."
I kept my eyes shut and tried to remain still as I heard bones snap from Sam's general direction.
I whispered as softly as I could while the demon's attention was on Sam.
"Cas, we're in trouble. I need you. Cas, please."
I heard another snap and an anguished cry from Sam that had me whipping my head up to see what was happening to him. It looked like she had dislocated Sam's right shoulder, and his leg, on the same side, was sticking out at an odd angle from his body.
Suddenly, the demon's eyes flashed with a brilliant yellow as the tip of an angel blade passed through the center of her chest. She arched back and the lights in her eyes flickered before she collapsed forward, revealing Castiel behind her. As soon as she hit the ground, Sam and I were dropped as well, landing with a hard thud as her power was relinquished.
I dragged myself to Sam who was cradling his arm protectively as he lay on his left side, no doubt the fall having shot more pain through his body.
"Hey, Sammy? You alright?" I asked, placing my hand on the side of his face. He rolled on his back.
"Yeah…..all good…. Just… Shoulder…." He winced as he continued to try catching his breath.
"It's all right, Sam. Just breathe, Cas is here." I soothed.
Just then, Cas shoved past me, muttering, "move."
He placed two fingers to Sam's head and the sickening sound of bones cracking met my ears as Sam's body was put back together. He let out a sigh of relief after. Cas put two fingers to my head as well, no doubt checking for internal injuries. Warmth spread through me and the soreness in my throat and ribs was relieved.
"Thanks, Cas." I said as I helped Sam to stand up. We were both a little shaken after that encounter, but very grateful for our friend.
"Dean, we've got to get back to Maggie." Cas said, tone insistent and concerned.
"We will. You can teleport back there and Sam and I will take the Impala and meet you there in a few hours."
"No, Dean. Now." Cas insisted, the look on his face indicating his concern.
I felt a sinking feeling at his words, but I nodded, understanding that whatever had happened, it wasn't good.
