AN: Kit's profile can be found on wattpad's version of the story which can be found on my profile: MaethorielArtemis
Dreams are a funny thing. Sometimes they can be confusing as a kaleidoscope painting or a clear as a glass sculpture. Occasionally they can be real as life itself. I should know. I'm kinda an expert on these kind of things. Why you may ask?
Well, it's all to do with the Doctor. No! it's not his fault. I'd never blame him. No, it's just that…I've been having dreams about him. About his various adventures and regenerations. Honestly I don't remember when they first started. Come to think of it, I still haven't figured out why I seem to only dream of him in the first place.
"K…"
Normal people would have dreams about all sorts of things. But not me. I'm a freak.
"K…"
I'm a freak just like those so called 'doctors' from that bloody facility. Thank God for Khayali…
"Mi Cariño!" that had the young woman's head snapping up. Standing there was her best friend, Mira Cadenza. "Yeah, figured that would get your attention", the hispanic woman remarked.
"Sorry", the asian teenager mumbled, closing her journal.
"Ah its ok", Mira waved off her apology "you were clearly absorbed in what you were doing" she nodded to the journal "more dreams of the Doctor?"
"Who else would it be?" Kit scoffed, setting the light teal leather book aside "I'm a freak". Mira reached over and lightly swatted the back of her head. "Ow!" the blackette cried "what was that for?"
"You know what", the Hispanic woman gave her a pointed look "you are not a freak" Kit opened her mouth "Ah!" Mira held up a finger "you are NOT a freak", she insisted.
"Alright, Alright", Kit put her hands up in an 'I surrender' gesture "I'm not a freak".
"And don't you forget it, mi cariño", the hispanic woman said with a smile and the blackette returned it. A sound of someone clearing their throat, gained their attention. Kit peered around her friend to see a woman in her late 40s looking like she swallowed a wasp. "I want this", she stated, setting a novel onto the counter, giving Mira the stink eye. The woman took a step to the side, allowing the customer to stand properly at the counter.
"Oh, Murder on the Orient Express. That's a good choice", Kit commented "I do enjoy a good Agatha Christie novel".
"I prefer Charles Dickens myself", Mira piped up.
"His work is pretty good", her friend conceded.
"Oh the book isn't not for me", the woman said, rather haughtily. She seemed fairly offended by the notion of having one of the authors books. "It's for my niece. She loves them. I don't know why though".
"Maybe she loves a good mystery", Kit suggested "they are what keeps life interesting". She scanned the barcode of the novel before bagging it up. The woman hmphed and paid for her purchase. "Have a good day ma'am", the blackette said politely, handing the receipt over to the woman. She just took it and left with the book without so much as a thank you.
Mira mimed kicking the customer up the backside, making the 19 year old giggle. "Some people are just rude", the tattooed woman muttered.
"You're telling me", the asian teenager agreed. She glanced at the clock and sighed. There were 4 more hours until she was done for the day.
"Well, I'll be heading off", Mira said after a moment "we still on for dinner on Friday?"
"Absolutely", Kit replied "the highlight of my week".
Her best friend smiled "great! I'll be at your house at 6". She then left the store, humming a random tune under her breath. 10 minutes later a 16 year old, black haired girl stepped up to the counter, a Where's Wally book in her hands.
"Is that all?" Kit asked, nodding to the book in her hands.
"Yep. Its for my dad", the other blackette explained, handing it over "he likes puzzles".
"Well this should keep him busy for a bit", the 19 year old remarked, ringing up the purchase "do you need a bag?"
The customer shook her head "Nope. I'm good", she replied and paid for the book "have a good…no a fantastic day", she added with a knowing smile.
"Thanks…uh you too", the Kit said, a little confused as she watched her walk away. She looked around at the customers, making sure that none where going to coming near the till anytime soon and pulled out her journal again. Her latest dreams of the Doctor had been as interesting as all the others, possibly even more so as this version was the one straight out of the Time War.
As much as she'd wanted to meet the other Doctor's, she wanted to meet the War Doctor most of all…just so she could give him a hug…assure him that everything was going to be ok. The poor guy has been through so much she thought, tracing a rough sketch of a wall with the words No More etched onto the surface via a blaster of all things. Kit blinked those tears away that had formed as she thought about all those innocent people she'd seen die in her dreams…all those lives that the Daleks took.
A tear dropped onto the paper. Kit raised a hand to her cheek, feeling the wetness. She hadn't even realised she'd started crying. She took a breath, wiping the tears away and forced herself to turn the page to look at the most recent Doctor.
She knew about his escapade with the Nestene Consciousness…how he met Charles Dickens of all people. She also knew about his latest companion Rose Tyler whom she had seen a lot of missing posters for. It had been very difficult to walk past them, to ignore them when she knew what happened. But how do you tell the police that you'd seen missing teen in a dream? They'd laugh her right out of the station.
Kit was suddenly broken out of her thoughts when there was a loud noise overhead, rattling the glass windows. She got up from her seat, rushing outside with the rest of the customers, joining the growing crowd out in the street. Her almond shaped eyes widened when she saw a spaceship collide with Big Ben! "No way", she breathed as it crashed into the Thames with a big splash. She couldn't believe this was happening. A spaceship in the Thames! This will surely get the Doctor's attention. A smile appeared on her face at that. Maybe this is the day that John was foretelling all those years ago… she internally mused, recalling the kind Scottish man from the so called 'institute'. He was her only friend in that hell hole. And his visits…they were the highlight of her day. Plus the little origami foxes he would leave for her, never failed to cheer her up. In fact, she still had them lined up on a bookshelf at home.
The blackette took off in the direction of Big Ben, hoping that she'd be able to get a closer look at the craft and if not…she hoped that she may run into the Doctor. Though what she'd say to him, she had no idea. She knew she couldn't very well walk up to him and say 'Hi I'm Kit! I know all about you due to these realistic dreams I've had ever since I was little'. He would think she was a crazy person mad…or even worse…someone that an enemy of his had created in order to get close to him…
The asian teenager shook her head to clear those thoughts. No telling him the truth, at least not yet she thought resolving to play dumb if she did indeed meet him. Unfortunately she wasn't able to get very far as the army was closing down the roads. So the black haired teen stayed there standing on tiptoes, straining to see something…anything.
Meanwhile on another street, Rose and the Doctor arrived on the scene "We're miles from the centre. The city must be grid locked. The whole of London must be closing down", Rose said taking it all in.
"I know. I can't believe I'm here to see this. This is fantastic!" the Time Lord said, happily.
"Did you know this was going to happen?" Rose asked.
"Nope!" the Doctor replied with a grin on his face.
"Do you recognise the ship?" his companion pressed.
"Nope!" the Time Lord repeated.
"Do you know why it crashed?" Rose questioned.
The Doctor shook his head and said for the third time "Nope!"
"Oh, I'm so glad I've got you", the blonde remarked, sarcastically.
"I bet you are!" the Doctor said, completely oblivious to her sarcasm "This is what I travel for, Rose. To see history happening right in front of us".
"Well, let's go and see it", Rose suggested "Never mind the traffic, we've got the TARDIS".
"Eh…better not. They've already got one spaceship in the middle of London. I don't want to shove another one on top", the Doctor said.
"Yeah, but yours looks like a big blue box. No one's going to notice", the 19 year old pointed out.
"You'd be surprised. Emergency like this, there'll be all kinds of people watching. Trust me. The TARDIS stays where it is", the Doctor told her.
Rose was rather disgruntled about that, she wanted to go investigate the spaceship. "So history's happening and we're stuck here", she said bitterly.
"Yes, we are", the Time Lord agreed.
"We could always do what everybody else does", the Doctor looked at the blonde questioningly "We could watch it on TV". The alien looked like this idea was completely new to him.
"Home sweet home", Kit murmured as she entered the bungalow. It had been her home ever since she was 8 years old. She had her adopted mother, Khayali, to thank for that. Like Mira, the Indian woman was incredibly supportive of the whole dream thing. If only she weren't working… her mother would've been able to give her some advice as to what to do if she were to potentially meet the Doctor. Yes, she'd resolved to 'play dumb' if she did in fact run into the Time Lord but Khayali would've been able to reassure her that it was the correct course of action.
She sighed and went into the kitchen to make herself a cup of tea. As the kettle boiled, the 19 year old kept a listen out for that wonderful sound that she'd heard many times in her dreams. She loved that sound as she knew what it came attached to, the Doctor 'magical' blue box aka the TARDIS. It was a long shot to say that least. After all…what reason would the Time Lord have to come to her house? She wasn't connected to the spaceship crash nor was she by any means special.
If Mira had been there she would've smacked her one…again. Kit winced, rubbing the back of her head. To be honest, she was glad that they were friends as this was her getting off lightly, if it has been anyone else who had insulted her…it more than likely would've ended up with a punch to the face.
The kettle clicking off, brought her back to the current situation. Kit made herself a cuppa before making a beeline for the living room. She settled herself down and the sofa and switched on the TV. A Spaceship crashed into Big Ben before ending up in the Thames…yeah that was gonna be all over the news.
It wasn't ideal, watching the events unfold from her house. She would rather have preferred to have been in the thick of it. Having said that this was rather like all those dreams she'd been having about the Doctor except this time she was awake….
Or was she? Kit pinched her arm. Ouch! Yep she was awake this time.
Satisfied by this fact, she relaxed against the sofa cushions, mug cradled in her hand while her eyes were fixed upon the TV were the BBC News was playing.
"Big Ben destroyed as a UFO crash lands in Central London. Police reinforcements are drafted in from across the country to control widespread panic…"
~Tyler flat~
The Doctor sat in the armchair watching the TV intently trying to block out the annoying chatter and gossiping going on behind him.
"They've found a body", Tom Hitchinson reported from the Thames embankment. This news earned raised eyebrows from the Time Lord. "It's unconfirmed but I'm being told a body has been found in the wreckage…"
Kit 's house~
"Holy…" Kit breathed, leaning forward on the sofa, wanting to know more.
"...a body of non-terrestrial origins. It's being brought ashore"
She watched as a covered gurney was carried away from the ship.
"Unconfirmed reports say that the body is of extra-terrestrial origin. An extraordinary event unfolding here live here in Central London. The body is being transferred to a secure unit mortuary, the whereabouts is yet unknown..."
The blackette sat back letting the information sink in. An alien was found in the wreck. And that brought up all sorts of questions. What does it look like? Friendly Or non-friendly? Did it crash by accident or did it intend to come here?
~Powell Estate~
The Doctor leaned against the railing, glad to be out of that flat. The gossiping was getting a bit too much for him. He looked down at the TARDIS which was sitting in the courtyard. The news said that an alien body had been found...taken to Albion Hospital. He wanted to go check it out. The Doctor glanced at the front door to the Tyler flat. Could he go without Rose? He debated for a moment before deciding that yes he could. Mainly because he didn't want to risk the wrath of Jackie Tyler. The woman had one hell of a slap!
He started to walk away when Rose came out of the flat. "And where do you think you're going?" she asked.
"Nowhere", the Doctor replied turning back "It's just a bit human in there for me. History just happened and they're talking about where you can buy dodgy top-up cards for half price. I'm off on a wander, that's all".
"Right", the blonde said slowly "There's a spaceship on the Thames and you're just 'wandering'".
"Nothing to do with me! It's not an invasion!" the Time Lord insisted "That was a genuine crash landing. Angle of descent, colour of smoke, everything. It's perfect!"
"So..." Rose said.
"So maybe this is it! First contact! The day mankind officially comes into contact with an alien race. I'm not interfering because you've got to handle this on your own. That's when the human race finally grows up. Just this morning you were all tiny and small and made of clay! Now you can expand!" the Doctor laughs in delight and his companion smiles "You don't need me. Go and celebrate history. Spend some time with your mum".
"You promise you won't disappear?" Rose asked, hoping he wouldn't just take off in the TARDIS and leave her behind.
"Tell you what. TARDIS key", he said pulling one out of his jacket pocket "It's about time you had one" he handed it over "See you later!" With that he left. Rose looked down at the key in her hand and smiled.
The Doctor quickly headed for the TARDIS and was about to step inside when a girl of about Rose's age appeared. "You may want to make a stop off somewhere before the hospital", she said.
The Time Lord frowned. How did she know he was going to check out the alien? And who was she? "Ok, why?" he asked.
"Because there's someone you should meet", the blackette answered, holding out a piece of paper.
The Doctor took it. "Kit Vulpes", he read aloud "I don't understand. Why do I…" he trailed off when he looked up to see that she'd disappeared. He glanced down at the note again before he shrugged, stuffing it into his pocket. He supposed it couldn't hurt to meet this Kit person. To be honest he was curious to know why the mystery teen wanted him to meet him or her in the first place.
The Time Lord stepped inside the TARDIS, not even hearing Mickey Smith call his name. The blue box vanished as the black man raced towards it causing him to collide with the wall. Hidden in the shadows, Emma snickered. "Aw…poor Mickey Mouse", she faux cooed "can't catch a break".
Kit walked out of the bathroom, rubbing a towel over her wet hair. She stopped when she heard movement coming from her living room. Thinking it was an intruder, she dropped the towel and grabbed the nearest thing she had to a weapon: a trainer. The blackette slowly crept over the door and peeked in. She let a gasp, the worn shoe falling out of her hand. The Doctor, the Time Lord she'd been having dreams about, was in her living room!
The Time Lord in question turned around at the sound of her gasp. He had to admit that for a human she was fairly pretty. Her fair skin, almond shaped eyes and black wavy hair had her in a league of her own…if he compared her to Rose. "It's ok, I'm going to hurt you", the Doctor quickly said, not wanting her to think he was. He wouldn't blame her for it. Strange man in the living room. Who wouldn't jump to that conclusion? "Are you Kit Vulpes?"
"I am", the asian teenager confirmed, still rather on shock to see the Doctor standing there. All those dreams she'd been having…never prepared her for this meeting. Not even the only friend she had in that god awful place, Mr John Smith…with all his origami foxes…and his words that practically foretold that she was going to meet the Time Lord...even that hadn't prepared her for meeting the alien face to face.
"I'm the Doctor and I need your help", the Doctor said. Kit's heart nearly skipped a beat. He was asking her for help. He was asking HER for help! The blackette's inner self was doing cartwheels, overjoyed by this. She forced herself to remain calm on the outside.
"Help with what?" she asked. Play dumb the 19 year old reminded herself.
"I'm investigating the alien that was found within the spaceship", the Time Lord replied "and my...er...source told me that you could help". Getting Kit's 'help' with the crash landing was the best way that he think in order to spend time with her and figure out why the mystery teenager wanted him to meet her.
"Well I don't know what your source has told you but I doubt I could any help to you", Kit said "I'm just a shop assistant".
"My source is never wrong", the Doctor stated when teenager didn't answer, he added "I have a lot of faith in my source, if she said you'd be able to help then I've got no reason to doubt her".
"But...uh….won't we get into trouble for investigating the alien?" Kit questioned, keeping up the pretence of being someone who doesn't want to go with a strange man. Though of course, she did want to go but couldn't let that on to the Time Lord.
The Time Lord shook his head "nah", he assured her "we'll be in and out before anyone realises that we were even there".
The blackette sighed and mumbled "Well...I suppose I could come along". The Time Lord grinned at her.
"Fantastic", he declared before taking hold of her hand and pulling her out of the room. Kit barely had a moment to grab a pair of converse that were in the hallway and put them on before she was dragged out the backdoor by a rather impatient, two hearted alien.
The asian teenager's heart started beating faster the closer they got to the TARDIS. But still she forced herself to stay calm. "Uh why are we going into a police box?" she asked "where's your car?"
"This is it", the Doctor replied unlocking the door and tugging her inside. Kit stopped dead, her brown eyes widening. She'd seen his latest console room in her dreams but this…this was so much more amazing!
"Wow", the 19 year old breathed as she walked slowly up the ramp, making sure to touch the railing to unsure that this was indeed actually happening. She went over to the console while the TARDIS' pilot watched. As much as he wanted see the 'alien' at the hospital, he wanted to see her reaction to the TARDIS just that little bit more.
Kit reached out and gently touched the console. The lights brightened and voices started to fill the air. There were so many, both men and women so it was hard to distinguish one voice from another. And then she heard it.
"You are the most beautiful thing I've ever known" her breath hitched. She knew that voice. It was the first Doctor she had dreamt about. You could say that it was the Doctor.
"Good luck" came the second Doctor's voice.
"Standing by"
"Three", Kit said aloud, confusing the Doctor. Since she heard three of the Doctor's, her ears starting picking out the others from the cacophony on voices that resonated through the air.
"Ready"
"Soon be there"
"Just got to lock on to his coordinates"
"Across the boundaries that divide one universe from another"
"Commencing calculations"
"Before I go, I just want to tell you, you were fantastic. Absolutely fantastic" the northern accented voice of the latest Doctor said. Kit frowned, she hadn't heard him say that in her dreams. Does it mean that its something he'll say in the future? She hoped it wasn't a foreshadowing of something to come. The 'before I go' bit left a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach.
Kit didn't really have too much time to think over what it could mean as another voice spoke up, a Southern London accent this time. Unlike the others, she didn't recognise that voice.
"Wanna break the time limit?"
Then came another British voice, though this one seemed to have a childish quality.
"It's a time machine. I can get you back five minutes ago"
Another voice piped up but this one wasn't as clear as the others. The only thing Kit could make out with that it had a Scottish accent. She couldn't be sure but it sounded almost like John's voice. The blackette didn't have much chance to really try to listen to it before she passed out, falling backwards. The Doctor quickly caught her. He glanced at the console then back at the unconscious girl concerned. What had happened to make her pass out like that?
That question however was going to have to wait. As was the investigation of the alien at Albion Hospital. At least until Kit had woken. The Time Lord picked her up, carried her out of the console room and headed for the med bay.
The Doctor gently laid Kit onto the bed. He considered 19 year old for a moment before he got out his sonic and scanned her. It only took a moment to get the results up onto the tablet. The Time Lord quickly looked through them searching for anything that could tell him why she'd passed out. He frowned at the results, aside from slightly higher brainwave activity, there didn't seem to be anything wrong with her. For all intents and purposes, Kit Vulpes was a healthy girl. She shouldn't have passed out and yet…she did. It seemed like he may just have a bit of a challenge on his hands with A: figuring out why she passed out and B: why that girl wanted him to meet her.
He was waiting about 20 minutes until the blackette started to stir. "Wha? Where am I?" she murmured, slowly sitting up.
"You're in the med bay", the Time Lord replied "gave me quite a scare when you passed out like that".
Kit looked down embarrassed that she had fainted. She couldn't help it, all those voices the familiar and unfamiliar…it had just gotten too much. But she couldn't tell him. Hopefully there would come a time where she'd be able to tell him the truth. If she became a companion that is. It had been her dream to become one but of course she wasn't going to demand to be his companion, that wouldn't be right. She was going to wait and keep her fingers crossed that he actually asked her. "Yeah I'm sorry about that", she said quietly "I didn't mean to faint…it's just a lot to take in" she gestured around the room, meaning the TARDIS itself.
"Its ok. It is a lot to take in", the Doctor agreed "and there's some things I haven't told you about this place and about me".
"What kind of things?" the 19 year old asked, though she knew all about the TARDIS and about him being an alien. She only asked just to keep up the pretence of being someone who'd only just met him. Technically she wasn't pretending as such as this was the first time she'd physically met him. She was just being careful with what she said and ask the questions that he'd expect her to ask.
"Well...this place isn't really my 'car' per say but it is a method of transport", the Time Lord confessed "it's a spaceship".
"A spaceship", Kit repeated.
"Technically it's a spaceship/time machine", the Doctor amended.
"Uh huh", the blackette nodded "So it's…alien?"
"Yep", the Time Lord replied popping the p "it's called the TARDIS. Time and Relative Dimension in Space".
"If the TARDIS is alien that means you are too?" the asian teenager questioned.
The Doctor nodded "I am".
Kit considered him "but you look human", she remarked. It was the one thing about the Time Lord that sometimes made her forget that he was an alien. The way he looked remarkably like a human the exception being the strange outfits he sometimes wore.
"No, you look Time Lord. We came first", the Doctor corrected her.
"Time Lord? Is that your species?" the blackette enquired.
"It is", the Time Lord answered "and my 'source' is actually…" he broke off wondering what he should say. He could tell her a truth and say that it was a strange girl. Or he could tell her it was his ship and that the TARDIS was alive. Probably the more plausible of the two… as weird as it sounds. Mostly because Kit appeared to be taking it all in her stride. Fainting spell aside, she was faring better than Rose did. "…my ship. Its sentient".
The blackette stared at him, feigning surprise "it's…its alive?" she breathed "that's so cool!"
"Yep", the Time Lord answered "you seem to be taking all this very well", he commented.
"At the moment I am", Kit said "wait till later when it finally sinks in". They sat in silence for a moment before the Doctor spoke.
"Do you think you're up to coming with me to check out the 'alien'?"
The blackette nodded "Yeah, I am", she replied. She got out of the bed, the Time Lord having to steady her for a moment when she wobbled before they headed back to the console room.
"You seriously think smacking it with a mallet is going to help?" Kit asked clinging onto the console watching the Doctor do just that when the console started to smoke. And then much to the surprise of Kit, the console stopped smoking.
"Yes, Kit it did help", the Time Lord, replied, grinning at her rather smugly.
"Wipe that stupid grin off your face", the 19 year old lightly ordered "smug is not a good look on you…Spaceman".
"Oi!" the Doctor protested.
"You are an alien, hence spaceman", the blackette shot back. She couldn't believe this. Bantering with the Doctor. It was so much fun! The Doctor grumbled under his breath and she could've sworn he called her 'Earth Girl'. "Did you just call me 'Earth Girl'?" she asked.
"Maybe", the two hearted alien admitted.
"Oh, you…" Kit let go of the console go for the Doctor with the intention of…actually she had no idea what she was gonna do, she just wanted to get him. The Time Lord darted around the console, dodging her grabs. The TARDIS set down with a thud just as the blackette managed to grab him. The pair were thrown to the floor.
"You ok?" the Doctor asked the 19 year old who'd landed on top of him.
"I'm not the one who hit a grilled floor", the blackette pointed out "are you ok?"
"I've had worse", the Time Lord waved her off "Earth Girl", he added with a grin earning him a whack on the chest from Kit.
