Missed Chances - Chapter 4
That evening Marshall, Chase, Cinder, and Rhonda had gone to town. They were getting food for the get together. They were going to swing by Zuma's and see Rocky for a little bit before heading back.
There was a knock on the cabin door. Everest took a deep breath, "Ok let's just see how this is going to end up." She opened the door to a beautiful pair of magenta eyes.
"Skye!" squealed Everest, hugging her best friend. "It has been entirely too long since you last visited." She then noticed the extremely muscled and handsome Belgian Malinois standing behind her.
"Everest," said Skye, "I've missed you so much. Ev, this is my partner, Douglas."
"H-hello Douglas," said Everest, "so glad to meet you. Skye has told me nothing about you two."
"What?" said Skye, "I'm sure I've talked about him before."
"Nope, you talk about your baby," laughed Everest, "But not your, uh, partner."
"I'm hurt," laughed Douglas, "You love that jet far more than me. But it is a beautiful aircraft."
"Sorry, come in you two," said Everest. "So how long are you here?"
"Well, the client flew in for a week-long meeting," said Skye, "But apparently, he bought a car from some collector that he is going to drive back. So, unless I get a really great request, I'm here for a week or so."
"Great," said Everest. "Let me go show you to your cabin. I'll let you get settled."
Everest walked them over to cabin # 4. "Here you go," said Everest. "I'll let you two get settled."
"Come help me unpack," said Skye, "We have so much catching up to do."
"Sure," said Everest.
They walked in and Douglas looked around then whistled. "Wow, I think I'm moving my operations here. This cabin is amazing." He turned and walked into a bedroom closing the door.
"So how long have you two been dating?" asked Everest, "Or is it more than that?"
"Ah, I thought you seemed funny toward Doug," laughed Skye.
"You said he was your partner," said Everest.
"He is," laughed Skye, "He owns half the business. I'm the pilot, he's the mechanic. We're not dating. I'll admit he has a hot body but he's more of an older brother than boyfriend material. I love him, he keeps my baby in the air."
Everest sighed and sat on the floor.
"What?" asked Skye, "am I missing something?"
"Skye," said Everest. "I was really concerned I had somehow allowed a problem to develop."
"Ok," said Skye, "I'm not following."
"Skye," said Everest, "Somehow a Paw Patrol reunion accidentally got planned. Skye, Chase is here. Of course, Rocky and Rubble happened to be in town also."
"Oh really," said Skye. "Uh Everest. Is he with someone?"
"Yes but," started Everest, but Skye had already slumped into a set. Tears were starting to well up already.
"No, no," said Everest, "It's not like that."
"W-what do you mean?" asked Skye. "He's forgotten me."
"No, the girl he's with is a work friend," said Everest. "She definitely doesn't see him in that light."
"What do you mean," said Skye, looking up.
"Uh, let's just say she would be more interested in you than she is him," said Everest, "she is a beautiful cocker spaniel though."
"Wh- oh, OH!" said Skye understanding.
"So anyway," said Everest. "Get cleaned up, dinner is at 1800. I'm pretty sure everyone is going to be here."
Rocky, Zuma, and Rubble were sitting over talking and drinking telling work related stories.
Cinder and Everest were talking.
Marshall had pulled out the pits and was clearing the area around of pine needles as well bringing the charcoal over. Chase and Rhonda were just walking up when Skye and Douglas walked up at the same time.
Everest noticed and walked over to Marshall, "Did you get a chance to talk to Chase?"
"Oh crap," said Marshall, "No, I got distracted getting everything out."
"Yeah, that's why I asked you to get Chase to help you," said Everest.
They both turned to walk that way, but it was too late.
Chase saw Skye walk up with a buff Belgian Malinois. He took a deep breath and approached. As they got within speaking distance Chase smiled.
"Hey Skye," said Chase, "It's really great to see you. This is my work partner. Lieutenant Rhonda."
"It's great to see you also," said Skye, "This is my partner Douglas. Nice to meet you Rhonda, are you an EOD Tech also."
"Yes, I'm a tech and now we teach together," said Rhonda.
"Uh, I-it's very nice to meet you Douglas," said Chase, "I hope you two are very happy together. I wish you the best."
Chase turned to go, tears already welling up and he bit his lip. Skye grabbed his paw, turning him around.
"Chase, Doug is my business partner," said Skye, "He's my mechanic and business co-owner. Not my partner partner."
"Oh?" said Chase, still trying to gain control of his emotions.
"Oh Chase," said Skye, "do you still maybe, um."
"Oh Skye," said Chase, "I was a coward. I have faced battlefields all around the globe. But I was never brave enough to face you. I don't blame you for losing hope in me. I gave you no reason not to."
Skye placed a paw on his lips and looked into his eyes, "Chase, I never gave up hope. I've never been able to find anyone that filled that space because you filled it years ago. I should have just asked you and saved us both the hurt."
"I was such an idiot," said Chase.
Skye once again put her paw on his lips. Then she removed her paw and replaced it with her lips. Chase's eyes almost popped out of his head, then he slowly closed his eyes and leaned onto the kiss.
"Yeah," said Rhonda, "I'm just going to go blow myself up now."
"I'll help with the wiring," said Douglas, "Say you want to go grab a beer?"
Chase and Skye shut out the world around them. They pulled each other into a deep embrace extending the kiss deeper and deeper.
"Whew! About time you two!" yelled Zuma.
Both Marshall and Everest both let out their breath turning to each other and laughed.
The party was great. Everyone was catching up when a big red F350 Diesel pickup pulled into the driveway. Everyone stopped turning.
Ryder stepped out of the driver's side, Katie stepped out of the other.
"RYDER!" yelled the pups all running and diving on top of him. Katie walked around and began laughing at the dog pile covering her husband.
"Wow, Ryder, how'd you know about the get together," asked Chase.
"What?" said Rubble, "I called him. It's not a Paw Patrol reunion without Ryder and Katie."
"If only Jake could have been here," said Everest.
Ryder knelt in front of her, touching her chest, "He's in here. He's in every part of this resort. He is so proud of all you've kept going here. Don't think for a second he's not here."
"Thanks Ryder," said Everest, hugging Ryder.
The party continued well into the night everyone stopped and looked around. Chase and Skye were nowhere to be seen.
"Uh great," said Rhonda. "Doug, you mind if I stay at your cabin tonight?"
"Not at all," laughed Doug, "You can have Skye's room, it appears she won't be needing it."
Everyone laughed and continued the party.
