Dr. Heywood Floyd, head of the National Council of Astronautics is a prominent character in 2001: A Space Odyssey. He also appears in 2010: Odyssey Two as one of the astronauts who returns to Jupiter to find out what happened. Story follows the movie plot, Discovery travels to Jupiter. Part 1: 2001.

"My god its full of stars" was the last transmission from David Bowman at Jupiter. He disappeared leaving a big mystery. After this the whole story of the TMA-1 monolith and its transmission to Jupiter came out. The Democratic President of the USA announced that there would be a Presidential Commission into the whole affair, where the activities of the government of her Republican predecessor would be under scrutiny.
Dr. Heywood Floyd, as head of the National Council of Astronautics, found himself under endless scrutiny from the Smith Commission as they investigated the whole TMA-1 affair. Floyd did his best to co-operate with the commission but he knew that his days as head of the NCA were numbered.
