Dr. Heywood Floyd, head of the National Council of Astronautics is a prominent character in 2001: A Space Odyssey. He also appears in 2010: Odyssey Two as one of the astronauts who returns to Jupiter to find out what happened. Story follows the movie plot, Discovery travels to Jupiter. Part 5: 2005.

The birth of Heywood and Caroline Floyd's son Christopher in 2005 completely changed their lives. Heywood's time with the NCA before Hawaii seemed to be a hundred years ago. Floyd's daughters were very happy to see their new baby brother but they were both about to fly away from the nest to attend university on the mainland, neither of them wanted to study at the university run by their father. Floyd was so busy with his work and new family he barely noticed the absence of his daughters.
The Floyd family moved into their new waterfront property and soon got to meet their dolphin neighbours. Floyd was so wrapped up in his new family life he didn't hear the news that the reelected President had finally approved, after endless Congressional wrangling, the NCA request to restart construction of Discovery II.
