Dr. Heywood Floyd, head of the National Council of Astronautics is a prominent character in 2001: A Space Odyssey. He also appears in 2010: Odyssey Two as one of the astronauts who returns to Jupiter to find out what happened. Story follows the movie plot, Discovery travels to Jupiter. Part 8: 2008.

The 2008 international space science conference took place in Honolulu. Floyd decided to attend for old times sake, he got to see several old friends that he hadn't seen since he left the NCA. He met Dr. Walter Curnow for the first time, he gave a talk on the progress of Discovery II's construction.
Floyd was very pleased to meet up with his Russian friends Elena and Ivan at the reception after the opening session of the conference. They were with an older man when Floyd greeted them.
"Aloha Elena and Ivan, wonderful to see you again."
Elena replied "Dear Heywood, wonderful to see you again, last time was at your wedding. Heywood, may I present Dr. Dmitri Moisevitch. Dmitri, this is Dr. Heywood Floyd."
"Pleased to meet you Doctor, congratulations on your appointment as head of the Russian Space Agency. Aloha, welcome to Hawaii."
"Wonderful to finally meet you Dr. Floyd, I have been looking forward to meeting you for many years. I enjoyed reading your memoirs. How are you enjoying being a schoolteacher?"
"It's a good life as University Chancellor, I even get to do some astronomy."
"Good to meet you, if you will please excuse me, I am sure that you want to catch up with Dr. Galikova and Dr. Galikov."
