Author's note: This is the second little gift for the mice, and my second teaser. In this story, Minnie is a reaper that claims Mickey's spirit. Of course, some shenanigans will ensue and they go on an adventure in the Land of the Dead. At this time, I don't have a solid title yet.
Squad Unit 19
Untitled
Clunk.
He leaned against the vehicle after setting the nozzle into the fuel filler neck. With a sigh, he placed his hands in his pockets and began the wait for the tank to fill. He took a brief glance around the empty station parking lot. Only him. It was a quiet night. So he had time to just indulge in the peace for the time being. The soft soft of the occasional vehicle passing by on the road was heard, but fell on mostly deaf ears. That is... until one caught his eye. Or more precise, the driver.
An old black station wagon... no, a hearse. A hearse of all things. Great. Though not like anything he'd ever seen. He heard the soft loppy sound of the V8 approach, and turned to see a sleek midnight black 1971 Plymouth Satellite Custom wagon pull in. The car was definitely not something you'd want to encounter at night. Bright white LED headlights shown through the night, and the lighting of the gas station lights reflected off the midnight gloss paint. Chrome side molding ran down the side and along the rear gate. And the old wagon rest on a set of Magnum 500 wheels. One thing he noticed that was odd, was the rear side windows were blacked out, and the usual hearse landau emblems were adorned on them. If he thought that was odd, what happened next was the real shocker.
After it stopped in front of him, the door opened and a small, thin figure emerged. A young little mouse, like him, with black body and cream face. And a cute one at that. Wearing a black sleeveless dress with a white band around the waist, the skirt rest a bit above her knees, and had a little flow to it. It looked like a party dress, or something you'd wear to a formal affair. She wore a red bow on her head, and white dress boots that came up to just below her calves that had a side zipper on the inside.
She closed the door, holding her pink purse as she looked through it as she walked around the back of the wagon, looking up at him with a smile. "Hi!"
"H-Hi!" He watched her go inside the station, no doubt to pre-pay for the fuel. She back out shortly after. She raised the pump nozzle, opened the fuel door and clicked it inside. She turned her back to the car and leaned against it, crossing her arms as she raised one leg and rest the heel of her boot on the tire.
He couldn't help but stare. This young girl... and a really cute one at that... driving an old hearse? She had to have come from a costume party.
"So is it the car or the girl/me that got your attention?"
He shook his head, not realizing he'd been staring at her. Great first impression. Making eye contact, he saw her smiling a knowing smile, eyes half lidded. "O-Oh! Sorry, I didn't mean t' stare."
The girl gave a soft giggle, one that sounded so melodic to him. Her gaze broke from his as she leaned her head back a little. "Well, you've been eyeing one of us since I got here." She looked at him again, her smile never wavering. "So... which is it?"
He cleared his throat, a tint coming to his cheeks as he rubbed the back of his neck. "Well, uh... The car's swell, but uh..."
He didn't have to finish his sentence. Her smile grew more, a tint coming to her own cheeks. "Never saw a girl drive a hearse before?"
He coughed as he tried to collect himself. "Not really. Especially one like that. That's not what I normally see for a hearse."
"It's a custom job. It's mine actually." The grin she gave as she finished was one of pride. He knew the feeling of being proud of your ride, and hers showed in her smile.
"Ohh, so you own it?"
"Basically," she said with a light shrug.
"So is it actually a hearse?"
Her grin widened. "Oh, suurre, I'm an Uber for the dead." Both shared a laugh. "It's not fully. It's more... for show than anything." She smirked, then gestured a thumb to the back. "I can show ya what's in the back, if you'd like."
He cleared his throat again. "Ah, no, I'll take yer word for it."
She chuckled, then lifted herself off the car, standing fully as she rest one hand on her hip and the other on the D pillar. "No, it's mine. I work for a private company. I had the choice of car that acted as both personal and company, so I chose this." She patted the pillar. "We've been through some things. And it's never let me down."
"Heh, they don't make 'em like they used to."
"Ha! Got that right."
The pump clicked and she turned to lift the nozzle off the car. He realized his own pump had shut off some time ago.
"I guess I better let ya get goin'. Ya headin' home?" He lifted the nozzle out and placed it back at the pump.
"Mm, soon. I still have one more errand to do before heading home," she said.
"Maybe I'll see ya around?"
She grinned a little. "Mm... I think so."
"Would, uh... Would it be okay, i-if I got yer n-number?"
She bit her lip with a smile. "Yeah, I'd like that. I want yours, too." She fetched a pen and notepad from her purse in the car and wrote down her number, handing it to him. "Minnie."
He wrote down his number on a slip of paper and he handed it to her. "Mickey."
After exchanging numbers, he walked back over to his vehicle, bumping into the front of it since he was looking back at her. She giggled at the display.
"I'll see ya later?" he asked as he opened the door.
"Yeah. See ya."
Sharing a smile, he got in and drove away, each waving at one another.
Minnie smiled as she watched him leave, then turned to her car. She got inside and sat with a sigh, closing the door. "...A lot sooner than you think..." She looked ahead, then reached for her phone. Checking her next objective, she saw the list of names, and the one that was next. She cast her eyes down the road following the sweet guy she just met. She reached for the key in her purse and put it in the ignition. "Come on, Zanther. One more job for tonight..." Pulling the column lever down, the wagon pulled out of the station lot, the lights flickering as the car drove off into the night. Inside, the gas station attendant wondered why the guy stood outside talking to himself...
The night was calm. Clear night with a half moon shining.
The thoughts of that girl kept entering his mind. He wondered if he should send her a text when he got home. Maybe make sure she made it home okay? He didn't have time to answer that thought before a deer jumped out of the tall grass along the side of the road and right into his path. He swerved to avoid it, but couldn't avoid the tree...
Mickey sat up, and blinked. He wasn't sure how long he had been out. Or why he was on the ground or how he got there, for that matter. He blinked and shook his head. He felt his body. No pain. Huh. He turned and saw his convertible. Well, the mangled wreck that was his convertible. He tilted his head in bewilderment. He had to have crawled from the wreckage and passed out.
Standing, he looked at the car. He was surprised he wasn't sore, but then crazy thing tended to happen to him. Realizing he wasn't going anywhere, he pulled out his cell phone. In the distance, cresting the hill, he saw a pair of bright headlights. LED's by the look of them. The vehicle neared and he saw the turn signal light begin blinking. Before it stopped, he saw what it was, and knew who was driving.
The black hearse from before rolled up and the headlights flicked off. The engine shut off, then the door opened. Out stepped the girl he'd met moments before.
"H-Hey! Wasn't, uh... heh... expectin' t' see ya so soon..."
Minnie gave a little smile. "Eh... I was heading this way anyway."
"I sorta had a little accident, heh..." he said, rubbing the back of his head.
"Yeah, I see that/So I see." She stepped by, moving her arms behind her back. "Looks like you're gonna need a ride," she said, turning her head to him with a grin.
He gave a wave of his hand. "Oh, no, it's fine. I can get a hold someo-" No signal.
"You won't get a signal here."
He looked at her, then to his phone again. For once in his life he was glad he had no signal. He rubbed the back of his head again. "You don't mind?"
She shook her head. "Nope. It's what I'm here for." She started walking lightly closer to the front of the car. "Give you a ride to your next destination."
He rubbed the back of his head. "Well, I wasn't planning on hitting it..."
"Deer crossed in front of ya, huh?"
He tilted his head. "How'dja know?"
She turned her front facing the car again. "Oh, it happens along this road." She pulled out her cell and started checking something, which caught him by surprise.
"You have signal?"
"Yep. Comes with the job, actually." She poked at the screen a bit before humming. "Hmm, yep. Here you are. 8291 Yensid Avenue."
He cocked his gaze in confusion now. "How'ja find that out?"
"Oh, I got your file right here. See?" She stepped closer and showed him the screen of her pink phone. And one thing caught his eye.
"Dead?!"
"Yep."
He grabbed his head, turning away as he started pacing back and forth. "No, no, no, no, I can't be dead."
"Ohhh, you're dead. alright. Finnito el you-oh. Pushing up daisies, the whole shebang. Ya bit the dust, pal."
"Dead?! How can I be dead? I'm standing right here!" He gestured his hands down to where he stood.
"Your spirit is there." She pointed to him. "But your body is still in there." She pointed a thumb at her side to the car.
"Whataya talkin' abo-" He stopped, jaw falling slack as he saw his body inside the car. "...I'm dead..."
She gave a soft sad, empathetic smile. "...I'm sorry. Really."
He stepped back, trying to collect his thoughts. "Then... how can ya see me?"
"'Cause I'm a reaper." Minnie raised her right hand and with a little blink of light, a scythe appeared.
Well, if she wasn't the cutest darn reaper he'd ever seen.
