Chapter 5
Sooner than he'd have thought everything became a dull routine. Kendall went to work early in the morning and arrived back to his motel room late afternoon. Just a few days had passed and though he was grateful for the busy work days he also felt regret and guilt for being able to forget about James just like that.
It's too fast.
On day six he lowered into his chair at the office that Lucy gave him. Kendall liked being there. It was quiet and sunny and Lucy's son had a good taste in furnishing. He didn't want to change one thing in it if he didn't have to.
The first thing he did every morning after taking his seat was checking his phone. He hoped for a call, or a text from James, but nothing ever came his way. Maybe this disappointment helped him through each day. He thought if James did not miss him at all, then he could do the same.
As the screen came to life with that James' beautiful face smiled at Kendall. Somehow it didn't feel right yet to change his wallpaper. Kendall wanted to have this little thing yet.
A knock cracked the silent. "Come in." He called out.
"Hey Kendall." Lucy walked in. "Bright and early as ever." She grinned. She really liked how enthusiastic and professional Kendall was at his work.
"The earlier I get up, the more work I can get done a day. Do you need something?"
"Actually," Lucy reached towards Kendall with her left hand. "I want to introduce you to someone."
"Oh who?" Kendall rose and followed Lucy. They were headed to the kitchen.
"When I hired you he was having a few days off so you couldn't meet him yet. He's one of my chefs. Logan." They entered the kitchen and though it was early yet, in there it never made difference. The kitchen was almost hot, steamy, some food was always in the process of making. Kendall was certain if he had to work there he'd lose sense of time and forget about the world outside. He wasn't sure if it would have been a good or bad thing.
Kendall was excited to meet Logan. Lucy's employees were all really nice, Logan had to be it too. Besides within the two minutes walk from the office to the kitchen Lucy had told Kendall all kinds of wonders that can be said in such short notice. Obviously Logan was good at his work, Lucy was happy with it, so Kendall was looking forward to meeting this guy.
"Hey guys!" Lucy addressed the people of the kitchen. They chanted a "Hi Lucy", all eyes were on Lucy and Kendall. "Where's Logan?"
"They just delivered the flour for the week, so he's out helping the boys bring them in." Camille, one of the waitresses was having breakfast, but still she seemed to be the fastest to inform Lucy.
With a move of her head Lucy motioned to Kendall to go out and meet him. Her phone was ringing in her hand. She was out before Kendall could have blinked two.
"Oh okay." Making it out to the back door Kendall paid careful attention to everything that happened in the kitchen. He liked to see how the business worked. A couple of minutes later he was outside.
There was only one figure he could not recognize. He went to the car. "And ten." The man who had to be Logan said. He shook hands with the guy who was probably the driver and lifted a sack of flour. One remained in the car though. "Hey you blondie. Help me with that?"
Not being sure it was a good idea for him to lift such weights Kendall refused. "Nah, you've got people for that." He gestured to one of the boys who was returning from bringing in a previous sack and the last package of flour was on his shoulder almost immediately.
"Didn't know our new manager would fear to get his fancy clothes dirty." Logan's sharp comment did nothing to Kendall. Following Logan inside he just hummed. "Oh I see, or rather hear he fears speaking too to the working person like me."
"Actually no. But why talk when nobody is interested in what I'd say." When they were inside again, Kendall took the papers from Logan. "My job does not include carrying in whatever comes here, nor it is to cook or to serve the food. It's to make sure that everything goes smoothly so you can do your job with all your colleagues." A quick look at the papers and Kendall biting his lips shook his head. "Now see, I think you are the one who ordered all this flour, right?"
"Yes." Logan tried his best at sounding derisive. "I see you can read. It's clearly there on the paper. I filled it out and gave the order to the previous manager."
"I think we don't need all of this. I've made a couple of calculations. I bet you lack those skills because it's pretty obvious that half of the last order are still laying here unused. It's a waste to have so much in store." Logan's grin disappeared as Kendall told him off.
"I like it better if I have enough so I don't have to fear running out of it." Heading in to the kitchen he was about to ignore what ever else Kendall had to say.
But Kendall was not one to give up so easily. "Having enough is one thing, having way too much is another."
"Alright." Snapping Logan turned around again to face Kendall. "You make the decisions I get it. Now you can go and calculate just how long you think you'll be working here. Because with that attitude I bet it's not as long as you imagine."
"I'd rather calculate your remaining time." Kendall shot and then left.
Dumb dickhead. Murmuring under his breath Kendall went back to his office. Taking a couple of deep breaths and a few sips of water he started the browser on his laptop. It was time for him to see a doctor to know if everything was okay with the baby. Yes. I need to focus on the baby and not on this dickhead.
"Sweetie?" Lucy appeared at the door. Kendall quickly shut the computer down. "I heard your meeting with Logan did not go too well." It had to be Camille. The girl liked gossip more than babies liked milk.
"I think I handled it well, Lucy. Don't worry. Everything is fine."
"You're sure?" She looked concerned.
"Yes." He forced a smile, though he rather felt like throwing up any minute.
"Right. Just let me know if there's any problem. He's a bit thick-headed and doesn't really get on well with the new ones at first. I think it's some issue of his, but once he lets you in you'll be in forever."
I don't want to be in there. Kendall thought but grinning did not say a word.
The days without Kendall had been rolling fast for James. There was a lot of work to do, and if there wasn't then he looked for something. Taking Carlos' advice he kept himself busy like in the old days. He needed distraction to not think of taking drugs or alcohol.
"Hey James." Bob, James' boss showed up.
"Hey Bob. What's up?" Grabbing a bottle of water and gulping half of it, James listened to his boss explaining that he needed a couple of workers to go south a few towns because they got a project there.
"Sounds great!" James patted Bob's shoulder. "Are we exploring new seas?"
"Oh yes looks like that." Bob laughed. "So are you in? You could be the head of the workers there. From everyone of my employees I trust you the most. I've known you since you were a kid, and you deserve it. You've been working very hard."
"Woah, you mean that? You want me to be the head of them?" James could hardly believe that his boss would give him such responsibility. Bob simply nodded. "Man." A few weeks earlier he would have said no to such chance because Kendall was here and he wouldn't leave him, but now it was a must go. "Thanks so much. You won't regret it!" And James meant it. This was something he'd been hoping for. A little light, a little something to hold onto when everything else was falling apart. James promised himself he'd not disappoint Bob.
"Alright." They shook hands. "Son, you're off to the new place tomorrow. The other guys are there already." Bob explained the further details to James, meanwhile James said a silent prayer of a thank you to all the Gods that made this possible.
It was time he moved on from this town. He had to go. It had been too long and there were too many memories, now added to them all Kendall's memory too and how he had broken his beautiful heart.
Maybe one day, one day when James would be ready, he could find Kendall again and start it all over again.
Maybe. If only he could sort himself out first.
"You're very happy to go." Carlos laughed. They threw the last luggage into James' car.
"You know Carlos, I really am happy to go." He looked at the house one more time before turning around ready to never look back, or to not look back for a long while. "I'm even happier knowing you're coming with me."
"You're kidding me, right?" Jumping in next to James, Carlos asked. "I've only had you here. I'm glad you're taking me."
"Me too. I don't know what I'd do without you."
"That nobody knows." James started the car. Their loud laughter filled the small space. And though James was indeed glad to leave, his happiness could not cover his sadness that the thought of a once returning Kendall gave him. He would not find him anymore here.
A long time had gone since their happy moment ended, and that gave a clue to Carlos. "You fear that he'll come back and not find you?"
Nodding silently, James drowned back a couple of tears. "James. If you were meant to be you'll find your way back to each other. I'm certain of that."
He wasn't able to reply a thing. He just drove, drove away, upset, because not knowing that driving away from where he once had lived with Kendall, meant him driving towards where they were going to cross each others' paths again.
