I originally planned for this story to be only two parts, but I might extend it to 4 or 5. Possibly longer? Haha, who knows :)
Anyways, here's part 2. Happy reading!
There had been little to no opportunity for Asami to talk to Korra about her newfound bending ability: Mako and Bolin had moved into the Sato mansion, and Asami couldn't just leave them be; Amon had laid the stadium completely to waste with his Equalist attack, leaving the Avatar much busier than before. Actually, in general, the whole Equalist movement caused a lot of pressure for everyone—Asami even noticed her father being more and more absent. She could understand that Future Industries would be working overtime to try and shut down the Equalists.
Besides that, Korra seemed to enjoy the time she spent with Asami at the mansion. To be honest, racing around the track with the industrialist had been an exhilarating experience—it had further lessened her apprehension towards the other woman. While there was still a hint of envy concerning Mako, Korra accepted the fact that she had judged Asami's personality wrongly. Though there was still that instance from the other night that bothered the water tribeswoman…
That didn't mean anything right? It was a little nothing, just a minor something that was being overthought. Of course.
Oh, that and the fact that Korra learned of Hiroshi Sato's conspiracy with the very revolution that was ravaging Republic City. The Avatar hoped that his daughter wasn't also a part of it, because she really was beginning to like her.
Asami was showing Mako and Bolin around her dad's workshop behind the mansion one evening when a troop of police forces burst through the door, followed closely by Korra, Tenzin, and Beifong. Korra looked grimly towards Asami before the latter spoke up.
"What on earth are you guys doing here? I told you before, my father has nothing to do with those Equalists!"
Beifong stepped forward. "Say what you will, Miss Sato, but we have reason to suspect otherwise. It has come to our awareness that your father may have a secret factory below these grounds."
"That's ridiculous! I'm pretty damn sure there's no such thing under here!" the engineer countered, taking a firm step closer.
The older woman stood in the center of the room, surveying all its corners. She narrowed her eyes and stomped her foot to the floor to "see" what was beneath it. "There's a tunnel under here," she proclaimed. Amongst curious expressions from the company—Asami in particular appearing to repudiate the assertion—Beifong moved aside to bend a slab off the floor.
Indeed, there lay the entrance to an underground tunnel. The chief ordered her men to proceed downwards. When Asami and the bending brothers attempted to follow, she stopped them, instructing one officer to stay behind and watch the trio. Asami opened her mouth to object, but then she noticed Korra lingering behind after everyone else had gone down.
"W-what are you still hanging around here for?" Asami muttered.
Korra stood by the taller woman's side. "Asami, I want you to know that I'm just trying to—"
"I know. I know you're just being 'the Avatar.'" Asami cut in. "But we honestly want nothing to do with those radicals. Just because my father and I aren't benders…" The heiress broke off her words upon registering what she was saying. Well, I guess it would be more correct to say that he isn't a bender… Which again reminds me that I still have to speak with her about this. But not now, ohh no.
The Avatar said nothing further, merely turning back around and heading down the entrance to the tunnel. Asami hung back, biting her lip and hands clenched in fists.
Goddammit… I trust Korra, but I need to go down there myself! She thought.
Asami felt an arm circle around her waist. She looked up at Mako, who offered a supportive smile. The engineer rested her head on the man's shoulder, letting out a long, stressed sigh. Hopefully her father didn't turn up to be an advocate for the Equalists, but those chances were proving to grow against him…
Mako and Bolin stood up, having just finished tying up the guard that was left to keep an eye on them. They couldn't wait any longer—they had to go down the tunnel. As such, the brothers invented a ruse to distract the policeman and brought him down.
"Asami, you should wait here. Bolin and I will go down for you to see what's going on," Mako said to the woman.
"What? No, I need to know if my father is…" Asami answered back, but her voice became quiet.
"It's all right. I don't want you getting hurt."
"…Fine. Please, be careful."
Mako followed his brother down the stairs. Asami watched them descend, and after a few minutes of staying put she too went into the tunnel. She understood Mako's concern, but Asami knew she could handle herself, at least physically. Whatever was down there, whatever happened… She had to see it.
Although, it seemed she didn't have enough mental preparation for what she discovered. Each second spent wandering through the passages and chambers boggled Asami's mind even more—what was her father truly up to? She didn't understand, there had to be a good explanation for all this…
Coming to the end of the tunnel, the industrialist was shocked and worried to enter a massive space in which she could discern a circle of robot-tank machines emitting green light, surrounding a pair of armored trucks. She could guess that the figures moving around were masked Equalist crusaders, loading people into those trucks. And the people a ways in front of her… Mako and Bolin!
Is that…? Asami gasped. They have Korra and Tenzin on their backs!
Asami crouched down, forming a plan of action in her head, when she promptly noticed flashes of blue in front of her. It took a moment for Asami to be aware of the fact that the flashes were flares of electricity originating from a glove on her father's hand.
"No, Dad!"
Hiroshi whipped around to face his daughter. "Asami. I was really hoping to keep you out of this, but now…" He paused as Asami tentatively took a few steps towards him. "Don't you see? It's…benders like these who have made the world a worse place to live. Amon's greatness shows how better off we would be without them!"
The CEO turned, and sauntered closer in the direction of the benders in question. He lowered his head and continued to disgrace the world of bending and praise Amon's revolution. Asami noticed Korra groggily lift her head from Mako's shoulder, their eyes meeting.
What are you trying to say with those eyes, Korra?
Hiroshi lifted a menacing glare towards the girl on Mako's back, sneering. "…this corrupt, degenerate mortal called the Avatar."
Asami grit her teeth and on instinct, lashed out a fist towards her father, fire expelling from it and knocking the man to the ground. Amon's lieutenant charged at her without hesitation, but Asami struck her foot out in a roundabout kick and flames ripped one of the weapons out of his hands. He rushed in on her again, yet Asami managed to land an uppercut to his jaw, swiftly latching onto his neck and planting a knee in his gut so that the man fell down.
By now Tenzin, Beifong, and Korra were all on their feet, everyone gaping in astonishment at the rapid chain of events that taken place in front of them. Asami peered over her shoulder, focusing on the bender in blue. Again, there was a certain message behind that gaze, but what was it…?
A whirring noise sounded behind the group, alerting them to the movement of the mecha-tanks. The six bolted into a nearby hole, barely escaping the path of a set of electric discs. They navigated through the tunnel back out of the workshop, and hastily made their way into the police airship that had been waiting close by. Nobody had said a word about what had transpired in the underground factory.
Asami stood by a window in the airship, somberly staring down at her home. She wasn't paying attention to what Korra, Mako, and Tenzin were saying.
"She obviously bent fire. We all saw it," Mako whispered.
"Yes. I don't know how she got her bending ability; such a thing has never happened before. This is certainly a matter we have to investigate thoroughly," Tenzin piped in softly.
Korra frowned and set a hand on Mako's shoulder. "Whatever the case, I think she really just needs you now, Mako."
The golden-eyed man went over to his girlfriend, Tenzin returning to Beifong's side. Asami took one look at Mako and quickly sunk into his embrace. Korra's gaze remained on the couple for a bit before moving to make cursory scans of the city out the window below.
Asami soon pulled away from Mako and lifted her head to look at the Avatar.
"Korra." The other woman turned her head towards the speaker, still unmoving from her spot by the window. "I need to, um, talk to you."
Korra raised an eyebrow. "Sure, of course."
Asami gave a small smile to Mako before guiding Korra into the hall connected to the room they were in. They walked a little ways down, but Asami stopped and turned around without entering another room.
"Korra, I honestly have no idea about this bending. When I talked to you the night you all came to the mansion the first time, something…happened. At one point your eyes sort of glowed… Then something changed within me and the next thing I know, there's fire coming out of my hand."
The shorter woman scrunched her face up in deep thought before responding. "I don't remember any of that. I didn't feel anything different between us at all, actually. Well, except for…" Her speech faltered and she looked down, blush rising to her cheeks.
Asami inched closer to Korra. "What? What is it?"
"It's, um, nothing!" Just that I felt closer to you. The Avatar promptly raised her head. "But hey, I'll help you figure this out. Don't freak out or anything. And…I'm sorry about your father."
"Thank you." Asami took Korra up in a hug, and after a surprised second the latter wrapped her arms around the woman.
She didn't know that Asami was so…warm. Plus she smelled really good. This was an embrace that Korra decided she did not want to end. That was okay, wasn't it? These thoughts left the Avatar a little time to prepare herself for the disappointment that came with breaking the hug. She grinned up at Asami through the heat on her face.
But was she ever not prepared for Asami to kiss her on the cheek.
Wh-what? Why? …Isn't this a bit weird?
Spirits, that kiss felt nice though.
Korra's mind was in a complete daze even after Asami withdrew. She mindlessly raised a hand to her cheek where Asami's lips had just been, doing her best to focus her vision on the woman in front of her.
"Ah… That's just another, uhm, 'thanks' for you," Asami spoke softly, smiling.
"Y-Yeah, no problem!" Korra's face grew redder, and she let out a nervous chuckle.
The two simply stood there, gazes shifting from each other to the floor. Asami eventually mumbled something about "returning to the others," and walked past a still stupefied Korra.
…Adding that on my list of things to try and make sense of. Korra thought, as she followed in Asami's direction back to the waiting group.
