Chapter 4: ANNA
In the past, Anna would have said good riddance to Thomas Barrow.
But now, she thought, knowing what we know…well, she did feel for him. He hadn't had an easy time.
Anna had always thought that if he could just be kinder to those around him…but now she understood why he couldn't. It was a terrible burden to hold a secret you must keep from everyone you know.
Imagine living your whole life keeping everything inside.
No wonder he hasn't got any friends, she thought. After all, how could you ever have a real friend if you felt compelled to keep such a secret from them?
She wondered if Thomas could ever marry. Anna had known a man like that before, and he had married, but Anna always wondered if his marriage was a happy one. He loved his wife as much as he could, to be sure, but perhaps he always felt like something was missing? She supposed he just did the best he could. But then, that's all any of us can do with our lot in life- just do the best we can.
Poor Thomas.
