Lilith and Frasier entered the emergency room as Analeigh was wheeled back for emergency surgery. A nurse explained to them that they would need to wait until Analeigh was stabilized.
Lilith was numb as she sat down amongst the rows of chairs. She stared at her hands, still stained with Analeigh's blood. Frasier sat next to her, handing her his handkerchief.
They both sat for a while as they tried to wrap their heads around what had happened. One moment they were arguing as they attempted to find Analeigh so they could bring her back in to finish making custody arrangements, the next moment they were looking at their daughter as she lay unconscious in the street after being hit by a car.
A while later a police officer came to talk to Frasier and Lilith to get their statements on what they had witnessed. It turned out that the driver had been texting, only looking up a split second before hitting Analeigh.
The time passed slowly. Lilith hadn't even noticed that Frasier had gotten up until he sat down next to her again, this time with a clipboard and a pen. She glanced over as Frasier attempted to fill out the intake form. He got as far as Analeigh's name and date of birth before he stopped. Lilith watched as the pen hovered over the spaces for Analeigh's social security number, her blood type, and other questions regarding her medical history.
"She's O-negative." Lilith told him.
Frasier looked up with a sigh.
"I guess I thought I would have known this much about her by now." Frasier admitted as he handed the clipboard over in defeat.
"Give yourself credit, you've technically only known her for two months." Lilith responded, filling out the paperwork as if it were Cosmo quiz. She thrived on order and was thankful for a useful distraction from her worrying.
"Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever be able to catch up." Frasier replied.
"It's not a competition, Frasier."
"Easy for you to say, you know her blood type." Frasier added, wryly.
"Will you ever be able to forgive me?" Lilith asked with sudden sincerity. "Do you think there will ever be a time where you don't blame me for not telling you about her?"
"I don't know," Frasier responded. "I hope so. I mean, I spent the last 17 years thinking we had aired all of our grievances and then, all of a sudden, there's your spitting image telling me she's my daughter. Where am I supposed to go from there?"
"She has your eyes." Lilith reminded. "And your love for the performing arts, though I've never been able to fully understand it."
Frasier couldn't help but smile.
"After she got back to Boston," Lilith continued. "Somehow she found a tape of your radio show's greatest hits on eBay and bought it. She falls asleep to it almost every night."
"Really?" Frasier couldn't believe what he was hearing. Surely Lilith was just saying that to make him feel better.
"Really," Lilith chuckled. "She's even started looking at colleges on the west coast just so she can be closer to you."
"Now your just lying," Frasier smiled.
"I'm serious." Lilith nodded. "Trust me, she wants to make up for lost time just as much as you do. So, don't worry about trying to prove yourself to her or to anyone else. She wants a relationship with you."
Frasier smiled at that news. Here he was panicking that Analeigh was already too grown up to want a father, but it turned out that he couldn't be more wrong.
After making a few phone calls to update their families on Analeigh's accident, eventually a doctor came out to the waiting room to meet with Frasier and Lilith.
"How is she?"
"When can we see her?"
They both asked at once.
"Your daughter has sustained a pretty serious head injury so we will be monitoring her throughout the rest of the evening, though I will say the surgery went smoothly so we're hopeful that she'll recover." The doctor explained as Lilith and Frasier sighed with relief. "However, we won't know the extent of the effects of the trauma until she wakes up."
"When do you think that will be?" Lilith asked.
"It's hard to say," the doctor shrugged. "It could be anywhere from a few hours to a few days. But the good news is that she's stable. If you'd like to see her I can take you to her room, however I must warn you that it may be quite difficult for you to see her like this."
Frasier and Lilith exchanged a glance. They were both terrified at the thought of seeing Analeigh so broken, but they knew that they would feel better being able to see her. They both nodded and the doctor took them to Analeigh's room.
As they walked in they saw Analeigh, laying in the hospital bed with bandages wrapped around her head and monitors stuck to her chest. The room was quiet aside from the slow, rhythmic beeps that tracked Analeigh's heart rate.
The tears that Lilith had fought back all evening finally began to stream down her cheeks. She sat next to the bed and took Analeigh's hand in hers while Frasier placed a gentle hand on Lilith's shoulder.
The next day Frederick and Krysta came to visit with flowers and Chris sat with Lilith for a few hours while Frasier went back to his hotel to rest. Numerous patrons from Cheers stopped by to offer their thoughts and prayers. After Frasier returned to the hospital, he and Lilith stood in the hallway as they chatted with their friends for a few moments. As the last of the visitors left for the evening, Frasier and Lilith stood in the hall as they tried to make plans.
"Lilith why don't you go home and get some rest?" Frasier offered. "I'll stay tonight."
"No, I'm fine." Lilith protested. Though she was tired she couldn't bear the thought of not being around when Analeigh woke up.
As Frasier continued to try and convince Lilith to go home, their squabble was interrupted but the sound of Analeigh's heart monitor flatlining followed by a painful scream from Analeigh.
Lilith and Frasier rushed into the room along with a team of nurses. Upon waking up Analeigh had removed the monitors connected to her chest and yanked out the IV drips connected to her wrists. Analeigh attempted to get out of the bed, however, the nurses restrained her as they struggled to reconnect her monitors and IV.
"Where am I?" Analeigh screamed as she continued to fight against the nurses that were holding her down.
Lilith rushed to her daughter's side, hoping to calm her down.
"You were in an accident," Lilith explained as she stroked her daughter's cheek. "You're at the hospital."
Analeigh continued to look around frantically before focusing on Lilith.
"Who are you?" She asked, tears in her eyes. Lilith felt her heart shatter into dust.
"I'm your mom." She tried to explain as calmly as she could manage.
"Okay," Analeigh responded, still confused though calmer thanks to the sedative that had been added to her IV line. "Who am I?"
