Chapter 18: The Battle of Manhattan
Phoebe's POV
I was just about to shoot my dinner when someone called, "Phoebe!"
I missed the deer by three feet. I turned and saw Artemis.
"War just broke out in Manhattan! Kronos is overpowering Luke and he's trying to take over Olympus!" Artemis beckoned me to follow her.
As I went back to our camp, I noticed Huntresses gathering up all the supplies and weapons. And Fiona was here for some reason, again.
"Why are you here?" I asked.
"I came with Apollo, who's going to provide transportation before he goes back to helping the Gods in their part of the fight." Fiona rolled her eyes.
I looked around for Thalia and saw her by her tent with a sullen expression as she gathered up her supplies and weapons.
"Are you okay?" I asked.
"I'll be able to fight. I just can't fight Luke." She answered.
"Okay, that's understandable." I reasoned.
"Better get your stuff before we leave. Apollo has to go really soon." Thalia said.
So I gathered up everything necessary for war and put it in my tent before shrinking the tent down to something I could fit in my pocket. Everyone else did the same. We all gathered around Apollo's bus.
"Alright, from the information we were sent, it sounds like there's a full scale war going on in Manhattan. Lady Artemis just left so she could help the other Gods defeat Typhon. So she has left me in charge to command you as we go into battle. And I'm going to warn you now, we will be taking orders from Percy Jackson, because he's been controlling the troops thus far. I don't give a damn what your predispositions are about men, Percy's a great leader, and we're just his backup! Now let's go!" Thalia commanded.
Everyone cheered their agreement as we got on the bus. For once, Apollo actually looked worried as he drove in uncharacteristic silence. Everyone else seemed to notice too, so they were starting to look worried as the whispered to each other. I was only worried about one thing. Was Connor alright? What has he been going through? My thoughts were interupted as the bus came to a stop. We were in Manhattan. All the mortal vehicals were still for once in the usually bustling city. The only movement came from demigods and other creatures fighting off the enemy.
"Get off the bus and hurry into battle. I have to go!" Apollo said as he opened the doors.
We all quickly ran off the bus to go into battle. I watched as Thalia headed in Percy's direction to tell him we were here. The other Huntresses immediately started fighting off monsters alongside the other demigods. I was more concerned with finding Connor. As I continued looking, I avoided monsters and Titans alike. I think I saw Prometheus eyeing us warily from the edge of the border between the battle and the enemy's side. Eventually, I found Connor and Travis fighting off a Laistrygonian Giant to defend a passed out Katie Gardner.
"I will eat her!" The giant yelled.
"Over my dead body!" Travis shouted back.
"Good idea." The giant grinned as he picked Travis up. "I'll eat you first!"
Connor looked horrified. I used the necklace Connor gave me to turn invisible and sneak behind the giant. Then I shot his heart through his back.
"Uh oh." The giant muttered before vaporizing into yellow dust.
"What the Hell was that?" Connor questioned.
"Ouch. My head hurts." Travis muttered because he landed on his head.
I made myself visible again.
"Phoebe!" Connor shouted as he ran up to me and hugged me.
"Hi Connor." I said breathlessly because he was squeezing me.
"So I guess I owe you my life?" Travis looked up at me from where he sat.
"I'm not expecting you to worship me, I just want you to stop being a jerk just because of the stupid arrows in your helmet." I answered.
"I'll be nicer." He grinned.
"And that's a promise or I'll kill him." Connor said before he kissed me.
"Help me drag Katie back to HQ. My head hurts to much for me to pick her up without falling." Travis slowly got up.
Connor and I obliged.
Then I heard Annabeth scream. I turned and saw Ethan try to stab Percy before Annabeth jumped in the way and she fell to the ground.
I heard a strangled moan that sounded like Luke shaking the ground with a loud, "NOOO!"
Percy angrily whacked Ethan with the hilt of his sword before kicking him so hard he fell of the Williamsburg Bridge. Then Percy pulled Ethan's sword out of Annabeth, threw it off the bridge, and picked Annabeth up as he headed back to Head Quarters. Connor, Travis, and I all stared in shock before dragging Katie the rest of the way back to HQ.
After we got Katie to our destination safe and sound, Travis decided to stay with her. Then Connor and I went back out and continued to defend Olympus. I barely got to sleep that night because I was thinking about all the havoc we faced and what we would have to face the next day.
"Don't worry, Percy will know what to do. He always does." Connor seemed to read my mind.
The Huntresses let themselves sleep in the same room as everyone else, so I had an excuse to sleep next to Connor.
"I'm just worried about you. I care about you, and if I hadn't found you when I did, Travis would've been digested, and Gods only know what would've happened to you. No one reacts well to their sibling's death, especially twins." I said.
"I know. I read Harry Potter when one of the Weasley twins died. But I still would've had a reason to live. I would've still had you." Connor turned to look at me.
"I wouldn't have a reason to live if you died." I commented with solemnity.
"I don't exactly have a huge target painted on my back like Percy. I'll be okay." Connor smirked.
"Promise?" I whispered.
"Promise." Connor said before kissing me.
