Chapter 2: Acceptance
Xephos
No.
Please.
This is impossible
Just…please…
I sat there processing everything I was seeing. Time had stopped. Cannons fired but I didn't hear any sound. The Commander screamed but I didn't hear the orders that he gave; the shock of the cannon blasts were dulled too. What did we do? I fell to the ground in slow motion as I looked across the vast expanse of wasteland that we had tried to save.
I looked up just in time to see a shell impact the base and sent me tumbling across the floor.
"Damage in the west sector sir!" Yelled one of the crew hands as another earth shattering blast rocked the fort. "MDF shields holding at sixty seven percent!"
"Ignore the damage! The Commander yelled back. "Hold shields and keep the fort moving backwards until the Nebakanezer is charged! How much longer?!"
"Another Minute sir! We just lost the main lower cannon!"
"Damn! Tilt the fort down ten degrees! All anti aircraft guns prepare to fire AOE shells on my command! Set fuses to 1 second!"
As if on cue all the grey mechanical surface of the fort sprung to life like a well organized army. Each cannon moved in sync with another like two ballerinas in synchronized dance. An alarm flowed signaling the all green.
"All units, fire!"
The Fortress lit up like the fourth of July. The shells impacted the vessels sending them spinning out of control or crashing to the dead earth. The third ship to the left exploded into a brilliant fireball along with the other three. The debris flew across the sky like confetti and rained down like hail. The two ships the remained slowly stabilized and began to retreat.
"LIKE I'D LET YOU ESCAPE!" The Commander screamed. "Officer Paton! The Nebakanezer!"
"Yes sir!" The officer replied back
The Four central guns that guarded at fortified the base began to physically change. The barrels split and connected to the others forming one large gun. Masses of energy built up within the barrel creating lightning and plasma. The lights dimmed in the control room as the meters began to rapidly climb.
"Ten thousand, One hundred thousand, One Million! Targets locked and we're all green!"
"Then fire!" The commander yelled. The cannon let off a massive bolt of lightning followed by the largest concentrated energy beam ever seen by man. The Beam fired out a single concentrated blast but then widened into all consuming light. The Beam consumed both ships obliterating them instantly.
As the energy dispersed the Commander sat back in his chair and lit another cigarette. It seemed to call his mood as the warning signs flickered off, the emergency alarms softened, and the cannons fell into their unarmed positions.
I slowly stood up bones still shaking from the shock and slowly turned towards the commander. "Is that really what we're up against?" I managed to choke out.
The Commander sat there unfazed and let out a large cloud of smoke before he said. "Yes, the world has changed Xephos. We now fight enemies who are armed with technology that we could of never dreamed of. We can do the rest of the debriefing after your friend Honeydew wakes up."
Simon… I looked at the Commander with dead eyes. If we failed, what's the point? Everything was for nothing. We're out matched with things we can't even understand.
"Why did you wake us up now? I said. "Why now when everything is so far ahead we can't even comprehend it?"
"We woke you because we needed you. Because you're our only hope for victory." He said.
"But what if I don't want to help you?"
He turned to me with a scowl. "Believe me, you'll want to help us like it or not."
