Author's Note: Okay guys so I'm hoping to get at least a little more content posted within these next few days. I have the starts of the next two chapters and I'm pretty sure I now know where I'm going with everything (still doesn't mean that I know the number of chapters that this will end up having though). I hope you guys don't hate me for the crazy inconsistent updates and how this story is unfolding so far. If you do, feel free to review and let me know! (Also if you guys want me to stop going back and forth each chapter with a different set of characters just let me know and I can try to accommodate)
The flames swayed back and forth, yet the boy still slept. The hole that he had hidden himself in really did keep him safe from all other dangers of Neverland. Henry found himself far enough in the damp hole that there was still a cooling feeling surrounding him while the rest of the forest turned to ash. But the boy soon shifted in his sleep. He groggily rubbed his eyes, feeling the immense weight of his entire body pull down so that he was fully prevented from moving; he was more hungry and tired than he originally noticed.
In Neverland it was difficult to keep track of time unless a method had already been established, which had unfortunately not been done by Henry. If he had been able to keep time he would have known that it had been over 48 hours since his last meal and that if he didn't consume something shortly that his stomach would shrink to the point of consuming anything as being an extremely arduous task.
The young boy stirred in his sleep, gently waking to the danger around him. It was not the heat that woke him from his slumber but instead the flames swaying back and forth, causing a disturbance in the light seen through his closed eyes. Slowly, steadily, he rubbed his eyes. His arms were heavier than he initially thought and that simple task took more effort than Henry would have liked. Once his eyes were clear of the sleep that had filled his eyes he was able to take in more of his surroundings. His first thought was wondering where he was simply because he had forgotten about his hiding place while waiting for the faerie to return. Once he established where he was, his eyes meandered to the outside world.
Flames. Flames everywhere. It was all a mere blur of red and orange outside of the tree where the boy had found safety. Fear flooded through Henry's body, making him immobile. He couldn't move even if he wanted to, and he wasn't sure what scared him more: the fact that he couldn't physically move or the fact that even if he wanted to, there would have been nowhere to move to.
Suddenly a sharp tug pulled Henry into blackness. He didn't know where he was or where he was going, all he could feel as a sense of falling as he plunged farther and farther into the deep crevices of the hole. After several moments he crashed to the ground. His body had grown so weak that he was incapable of holding his head upright, resulting in a great smash to the hard floor.
"Wha-? Where am I?"
Henry's confusion was not subtle; even an infant would have been able to tell the confusion that rang throughout his mind. Suddenly a voice rang out in dark silence.
"You're safe."
Henry quickly looked over to where the voice came from. There was so much darkness that this meager attempt to discover some sort of information failed miserably. All Henry was able to see was the dark surrounding him, in which case he was unable to truly see anything at all since without light there is simply nothingness. Henry had learned that in school a few years back and he was surprised that that was the first thing that came to mind when he realized the extent of his situation.
"Where…where are you?" Henry was amazed that he had had the strength and courage to speak out into the darkness. "Who are you?" That time he had been able to gain more strength into his voice and sounded less meager.
"It doesn't matter who I am until we can actually see each other." A torch was lit. Henry realized that he was not in a room but instead a cavern. He realized that his head had fallen onto the hard, rough brush below his feet instead of a stony-tiled floor.
'Well of course. I mean, it's not like I'm in Storybrooke anymore. Why would an actual floor be in Neverland? That'd just be ridiculous.' Henry wasn't sure how felt at that point. He was comforted because he could finally see but he was also unnerved because a mysterious boy took Henry to an unknown location. Of course, not much was new with that part of his adventure.
Now that there was actual light in the cavern Henry was able to look more closely at the boy who tugged him backwards. He appeared as if he were a weakling, although Henry couldn't have looked much better himself due to his lack of nourishment. The boy in front of him was small, but he dressed as if he were a Lost Boy. That confused Henry since the Lost Boys tended to stay together in the campground unless given an assignment by Pan.
"Are you a Lost Boy?"
The young boy looked up at Henry. Even though Henry was weak and his muscles had begun to deteriorate he was still much bigger than the boy who "rescued" him.
"Yeah. I'm Jacob."
Jacob held out his hand to greet Henry, which was cautiously taken by the larger boy. He had been around the Lost Boys and Peter Pan long enough to know that there may always be a trick up someone's sleeve and that nothing could be what it seemed.
"You don't have to worry, I'm not hiding anything. Well, except myself." Henry gave a quizzical look. He had never heard of a Lost Boy needing to hide himself.
"It's a long story."
"I have time, it's not like I'm going anywhere." Henry shrugged. He truly did wish to know the young one's story and why he needed to hide. He also wanted to know where he was, why it existed, and why this Lost Boy would help Henry escape from the flames that blazed around his hiding spot.
Jacob let out a deep sigh as if he had been holding it in for years, always wishing to release it but never having the right person to release it to.
"Okay, well first things first, you need to know that I hate Peter Pan and I don't want to be in Neverland."
