Faerie Child
Side Story 2!
Syllith swatted lazily at Firelight when she flew in close to his face as Delia carded her fingers through his hair. The grown-ups were doing the talking thing where they got together and sat down. It was boring and Syllith always fell asleep during it. Hence he knew he had enough time to sit lay here without being bothered. "Princeling let's go!"
He opened up one sleep filled eye and looked at the pixie. Her sharp teeth flashed in a wide grin as her wings quivered in excitement. "I'm not going in any faerie circles."
His petulant tone soft with sleep and the dryads giggled at their cute prince. Firelight merely rolled her eyes at him before stating, "We don't have to go into any faerie circles. Besides don't you want to practice your magic?"
The little boy frowned, getting up slowly much to Delia's put upon sigh. He snuggled into her side to satisfy her as he asked curiously, "You can teach me?"
Firelight gave him an affronted look as she snipped, "Of course! We Fey are from magic after all."
Syllith grinned, knowing he'd accidentally stepped on some toes. "I'm sorry."
She sniffed delicately but he knew from the glimmer in her eyes that all was forgiven. Whizzing back into the air she placed her hands on her hips as she looked at him expectantly.
"Well? Are you coming or not?"
Windwhisper and Delia gave her reapproving looks for rushing him but he merely giggled. Rising to his feet he mimicked her stance as he said playfully, "Lead the way Firelight!"
Doing a little flip in the air she crowed in victory before whipping into the forest calling out behind her, "Follow me!"
Delia and Windwhisper giggled and they tugged him forward before leaping into the trees gracefully. Without a thought Syllith gave chase, peals of childish laughter echoing around them as the dryads leaped through trees, tousling his hair as they remained just out of reach. Even Firelight joined in, whizzing past his head tauntingly once in a while and laughing when he missed her. The continued like that until finally the pixie stopped at a small pond, Syllith collapsed at the edge of it, giggles still escaping him as Delia and Windwhisper fell atop of him. Firelight tugged playfully at their hair before a voice cut through, "What in the name of the Faerie Queen is going on here?!"
The three fey woman jolted straight before realizing it was only Buttlebee, his beady eyes looking at them with clear irritation. However, Syllith grinned happily at seeing him and launched himself at the fey that was barely any bigger than he. "You came! Will you help me with my magic as well?"
Buttlebee scowled in mild annoyance but the sharpness in his eyes softened slightly as he awkwardly patted the child's head. "I am the one teaching you."
Syllith opened his mouth but Firelight cut in as she said excitedly, "Right! Let's get this started then!"
Syllith rolled his eyes, unsure of which one of them was more excited about his magic. Buttlebee shot her a sharp look that sent the dryads into a fit of giggles before flitting to the trees around them to tend to them. Once Buttlebee was satisfied he nodded his head at Syllith and spoke. "Your magic is different from Istari magic, in fact it's pretty close to fey magic as it relies on the earth around you and reacts to your emotions."
He gestured to the pond in front of them and began instructing him. "First things first. Water is the hardest to control since it's so slippery. We'll start with that then."
Syllith only partially paid attention as Buttlebee gave instructions but his ability to use his magic was uncanny. Somewhere in the back of his mind where that other often made itself known he knew that this magic was familiar but wordless. His attention was caught again when Firelight playfully weaved through his water spheres and he stuck out his tongue in concentration as he made it chase after her before Buttlebee noticed and scolded them both. Delia and Windwhisper let out twin giggles as they rested on either side of Syllith as he called up light and fire beside the water.
"Buttlebee…I'm tired…" Syllith's voice was plaintive, the edges of his tone slightly sharp with mild annoyance. He'd been at this for quite a while with no break, so his mood was turning slightly sour much to Firelight's amusement. Buttlebee blinked in surprise at his tone and she laughed as she said lightly, "Our princeling is already beginning to act like a royal would with his private instructor."
The two Dryads cooed happily as they said in unison, "The Queen will love him."
"Yes love him!"
Buttlebee scowled as he grumbled out, "It doesn't feel like that long ago when she herself was complaining about her lessons."
Firelight snorted rudely as she said cheekily, "You've taught four generations of Queens. You should be used to it."
The little prince blinked as he looked at Buttlebee in awe, still trying to maintain the shape he'd made in the sky with the water. "How old are you?"
Buttlebee shot the princeling a sharp look as he gently cuffed him in the back of his head and said, "Old enough to know you are far too young to be acting like a tired sapling. Keep going."
Syllith let out a small whine, getting ready to protest when something caught his eye from the ponds edge. When he caught sight of what it was, it only took a second for a domino effect to happen. His concentration broke completely as he let out a soft gasp, drawing the attention of the four Faeries with him. Delia let out a delighted noise as she saw what caught his attention and scooped him up, rushing forward. The boy's ear twitched as he caught a sound from behind but his attention was locked solely on the creature in front of him. Peeking out slightly from the water's edge was a horse-like creature and Delia knelt in front of it with Syllith in her lap. The boy watched mesmerized as she clicked softly to the creature and it rose even further out the water, nose reaching out towards them as it took deep whiffs. Syllith giggled when it buried its muzzle in the crook of his neck and took deep sniffs causing the fine hairs on its nose to tickle.
"It is a kelpie. Ode this is our princeling."
Mirth filled the dryad's voice and the kelpie backed up a bit, completely white eyes staring at him thoughtfully for a moment. Sylith knew that most would probably find it scary, it was big with a muscular body. It was a dark green with long trailing hair and tail, fins upon its legs and sharp canines. However, Sylith could only see the beauty in the creature and grinned, reaching out for it. Within a second a young man stood in the horses place and like the horse he had white eyes, greenish hair, sharp canines and muscular body. He grinned down at Syllith before picking him up and cradling the princeling in his arms. "Hello, Princeling."
"Careful princeling. Kelpies are notorious for carrying off children and eating them."
Syllith blinked and looked towards Firelight in time to see a grumbling Butterbee wringing out his soaked clothes. The little elf giggled, realizing when he'd lost concentration the water he'd been manipulating had fallen atop the Bwca. "Are we any more dangerous than the pixies that lure unsuspecting humans into their Faerie circles?"
Firelight scowled at the kelpie man as Delia and Windwhisper cooed over him, obviously impressed with his looks. "Don't get cocky with me, whelp. You are two hundred years too young. Now put the princeling down."
The kelpie snorted rudely and held on to Syllith tighter as he said, "You've been hogging him to yourself long enough, pixie. Let the rest of us have a turn."
The pixie's eyes flashed and Windwhisper easily slipped the elfling from the Kepie's grip as he and Firelight went at it with each other. She hugged him tightly as she said softly, "Syllith is very loved, everyone wants their chance with you."
Buttlebee came up beside them and sniffed in dignified disgust. "Of course he is loved, he is our kith…besides he was ours first."
Syllith blinked before realizing the Bwca meant the four of them by 'ours' and grinned that even the stuffy Bwca felt possessive over him. He snuggled deeper into Windwhisper's arms as Delia giggled at the insults flying between the Kelpie and pixie, making Syllith grin. This was where he was wanted and for some reason the 'other' in him felt extremely happy with that.
End!
