Chapter 8-Heartbreak
Emma Swan POV
"Emma, please," Mary Margaret begged me. "Just come with me to the store. We'll be back in less than an hour."
"No,"I grumbled irritably. "I feel huge and ugly. I'm not leaving this apartment unless it's to go to the hospital to deliver this baby."
"Emma, you look beautiful," Mary Margaret coaxed me with a wide smile. "Getting outside will do you some good."
"Aren't mothers required to say that?" I asked, but I already knew that I've lost this argument. Mary Margaret could be very persuasive when she wanted to and I was finding it impossible to refuse her.
"Fine." I sighed as I pulled my coat over my bloated body. "But I'm going to time you. One hour, that's it."
We ended up wandering around the grocery store. Mary Margaret bought a basketful of groceries, insisting that she needed all of it. I had never bought that much groceries before in my life, because it had always been just me, and I didn't need a ton of food to get by. After the quick grocery store stop, Mary Margaret insisted we stop for a quick bite to eat at Granny's.
"We need another place to eat in Storybrooke," I sighed. "I mean, Granny's is literally the only place to eat in the whole town!"
"Don't let Granny hear you say that!" Mary Margaret teased. "She'll never forgive you!"
"Yeah, I suppose so," I said with a smile. Mary Margaret and I both ordered sandwiches and sat in a corner booth to eat them.
"Emma, I'm excited for you," Mary Margaret said after we sat down and waited for our sandwiches. "I mean, this is your second chance at motherhood."
"Yours too," I said with a gesture at her belly. I was a little bit excited, to be honest, but I was also nervous. Zelena's latest threat to my unborn child wasn't exactly comforting.
"I know this is weird," Mary Margaret smiled encouragingly. It was obvious that she wanted to have a mother-daughter conversation with me. I found that I didn't mind much- it was nice to finally have a mother figure in my life. "But I want to be there for you. I want to help you with the baby and finally be a mother to you."
"Thank you," I said with a small smile. "I'm glad Hook brought me back to Storybrooke. Even if there is a Wicked Witch on the loose who wants to steal my baby."
"We won't let that happen," Mary Margaret said fiercely. "She won't be able to lay a finger on your baby."
"That's what Hook said," I said. "But I'm wondering if we should just kiss. I want to do everything I can to protect her."
"Hook doesn't want to take away your magic," Mary Margaret said in understanding. "And I have a feeling that Zelena will do what she wants whether you follow her rules or not."
"So, you think Zelena will take my baby no matter what I do?" I asked in horror.
"No, I just meant that Hook is right." Mary Margaret explained hastily. "We can't let Zelena make our choices for us."
"Hook believes that I am the key to defeating Zelena," I explained. "But I don't care about defeating her."
"He's right," Mary Margaret said with a smile. "Don't kiss him. We can take care of your baby."
"Are you sure?" I asked dubiously. "She has Gold on her side!"
"Yes," Mary Margaret said confidently. "Just have hope."
I rolled my eyes at the Charming family motto. "Okay, but I'm still not sure what I'm going to do. I need to think about everything." I said, closing the conversation.
"Do you have a name picked out yet?" Mary Margaret asked on the drive back.
"No, but I like Hope for a middle name," I paused before finishing. "I was thinking of letting Hook choose her first name."
"You love him, don't you, Emma?" Mary Margaret asked softly.
"I care for him," I replied quickly. "I don't know if I love him yet. But I know that if something were to happen to him, I would be lost again."
"It's ok to not be ready to admit that you love him yet," Mary Margaret said understandingly. "These things take time."
"Really?" I asked dubiously, recalling the fairy tales that go on about "love at first sight" and all that crap.
"Your father and I didn't admit our love right away!" Mary Margaret smiled reminiscently. "I tried to rob him and then he captured me in a net!"
I laughed softly. It was hard to imagine a time where Mary Margaret and David didn't love each other.
"Don't laugh!" Mary Margaret giggled. "It's true! I hated your father for a long time. I named him Prince Charming out of contempt, not love, like the Disney fairy tales insist."
"Really?" I asked, surprised at how wrong the Disney fairy tales were.
"Yes, we weren't always lovey-dovey," Mary Margaret smiled. "I mean, look at Hook. Did Disney get Captain Hook right?"
"Thankfully, no," I laughed. "Don't tell him this, but he's much more attractive in real life."
"Why not?" Mary Margaret asked mischievously, her eyes twinkling with this newfound secret.
"Because it will inflate his already extra-large ego," I said. I could just imagine how his lips would curve up with in a cocky little smirk. Then again, if I wanted to keep a secret, I shouldn't have told Mary Margaret, because she happens to be the worst secret-keeper in the world.
"We're home!" Mary Margaret sang. "Look, that wasn't too bad, right? I told you it would be good to get out of the apartment!"
"Yeah, sure," I said grudgingly. A couple people had stared at my balloon-shaped body, but thankfully, nobody had said anything. Either way, I'll feel much better after I've given birth.
"Just leave the stuff in the car," Mary Margaret added as we climbed out of the car. "David will get them on his way up to the apartment."
"Okay, let's go," I said wearily. "I am ready for a nap- this baby is exhausting me!"
Nothing could have prepared me for what I saw when I opened the door to Mary Margaret's apartment. It looked like every woman in Storybrooke had squished herself into the apartment while Mary Margaret and I were out shopping. The apartment was completely pink- pink streamers, pink confetti everywhere, pink covers on every single surface and pile of gifts wrapped in pink. I almost gagged at the absolute girliness of it.
"SURPRISE!" Everyone yelled once they saw me standing in the doorway. Behind me, Mary Margaret was practically bouncing up and down in her excitement.
"Now I know why you wanted me out of the apartment," I said with a grin.
"Do you like it?" Mary Margaret beamed at me happily. "We've all been working on this for days!"
I didn't have the heart to tell her that I wasn't used to parties in my honor and was feeling uncomfortable, so I just smiled and nodded my head. I stepped into the apartment hesitantly, fully expecting Ruby or Belle to throw a whole bag of confetti at me, but thankfully, they refrained.
"It's a princess theme," Mary Margaret explained. "Ruby wanted to go with a pirate theme, but we managed to persuade her."
I think I would have enjoyed a pirate theme more, just because there would be less of the pink confetti. I had decorated my daughter's room in soft shades of pink in the apartment in New York, but it wasn't the revolting bright pink that covered every inch of Mary Margaret's apartment.
"Thanks, guys," I said, trying my best to be happy. After all, this party was for me and my daughter. No one had ever cared enough about me to throw me a party before. "This must have taken ages to plan."
"We've been working on it for the whole week," Ruby smiled brightly. "It gave me an excuse to leave the diner early!"
"Watch yourself, young lady," Granny said in a no-nonsense voice. "I'll give you extra hours this week!"
Ruby pouted, but turned to me a second later with a bright smile. "Mary Margaret made me ditch my red outfits for pink." She gagged. "You better appreciate this, Emma."
Sure enough, Ruby was decked out in pink miniskirt and light pink tank top. Even her normally red lipstick was replaced by a bright pink color. I laughed. "I never thought that I'd see you in pink!"
"Don't get used to it," She grumbled sourly.
"Miss Swan," A sharp voice behind me inquired.
I turned around and came face to face with Regina. She hadn't ditched her black dress for something pink like Ruby. Instead, she wore her normal black blazer and pant suit I tried to imagine Regina in something bright pink, but the image was too ridiculous for me to even think up.
"Miss Swan!" Regina snapped. "Does pregnancy affect your hearing?"
"What? No! Sorry, Regina," I smiled, finally turning my attention to Regina. "Thanks for coming."
"Yeah, sure," Regina rolled her eyes. "Mary Margaret would have hunted me down if I didn't show up."
"She's really going overboard on this, isn't she?" I asked, trying to keep the conversation going. Regina was not an easy person to get along with.
Regina picked a piece of pink confetti out of her dark hair and flicked it with more force than is probably needed. "Yes, Miss Swan, she has."
Mary Margaret came to the island table to place a gigantic pink cake in the middle. It was pink, with pink flowers, pink icing and pink frills on the side. "I made that for her with my magic," Regina said sullenly. "It was the worst use of my magic imaginable."
"I'm very sorry," I said sincerely
"I'm sure you and the handless wonder will be parents⦠of some sort, at least," Regina scoffed. "I still don't understand how this even happened." She added, pointing at my belly.
"Well, you see, Regina, there's this thing called sex," I began in a patient voice, as if speaking to a much younger person.
"Miss Swan, please, I don't need any of your sass," Regina rolled her eyes, but I could have sworn that I saw her smile briefly.
"Regina!" Mary Margaret ran over with a desperate look in her eyes. "I forgot to buy plates from the store today! Can you magic us some, please?"
Regina gave me a look. "Next thing you know, she'll be asking for pink unicorn balloons." She said in a low voice.
Mary Margaret stared at Regina with delight. "Of course! Why didn't I think of balloons?" She smiled widely and gave Regina a hug. "Could you make some balloons along with the plates- all in pink, of course!"
Regina took a pointed step away from Mary Margaret, but a second later. a stack of pink plates was on the table, next to the cake, and Regina had several pink unicorn balloons in her hands.
"Oh my God," Ruby gasped. "Regina has pink unicorn balloons! I need to get a picture of this! The former Evil Queen is making balloons!"
And before anyone could move a muscle, Ruby's super-fast wolf powers had enabled her to take several shots of a murderous-looking Regina. "I have to show Whale!" Ruby said with a giggle. There was already a gaggle of women around Ruby, demanding her to send the picture to them as well.
"Miss Swan, this is why I don't socialize," Regina said dryly. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go find my dignity."
"Ok, cake time!" Mary Margaret called brightly. "Emma, come cut the cake!"
The rest of the afternoon passed excruciatingly slowly. After the cake was cut and eaten, everyone dispersed to play the games that Mary Margaret had set up all around the apartment. One of the games, called "Guess the Name!" was driving me crazy. I swear that Ruby had already put in a hundred guesses for my baby's name. It seemed that no one heard me- or cared, for that matter- when I insisted that I didn't have a name picked out.
Ruby ran over to where I was curled up on the couch. "Emma, it's Anna, isn't it?" Ruby asked excitedly. "Or is it Arianna? Emma, come on, I've guessed all the names on the Top 100 list!"
"Sorry, Ruby," I sighed as I rubbed my swollen belly. My back was aching nonstop and I was feeling absolutely exhausted. "I don't even know her name yet!"
"What?" Ruby put her hands on her hips and glared at me. "Have you been laughing at me for the past hour while I've been guessing? You could have told me that you didn't have a name yet!"
"I tried to," I said with as much patience as I could muster. "You didn't want to listen!"
"Okay, Ruby, calm down," Mary Margaret ran over in a desperate attempt to soothe Ruby and keep the party from becoming a catfight. "Let's open the presents now, how does that sound?"
And, so, everyone crowded around the couches or sat on the ground. Ruby insisted that I open hers first, so I tore through the pink wrapping to find another layer of red wrapping underneath. "I had to use red," Ruby smiled, argument forgotten.
Ruby had also flouted the princess theme. She had gotten me a stack of baby clothes, all with ships or stripes on them. One of the onsies read Mommy's Little Pirate Princess. I laughed, having a feeling that I'd be using Ruby's gifts more than the other pink tutus and princess dresses that were surely hidden inside the wrapped boxes.
Granny had sewn a beautiful quilt for the baby. It reminded me of my baby blanket, and I thanked her. Granny just nodded, knowing exactly why this gift was so meaningful to me. Others had brought the baby more clothes, shoes and even a baby swing. It was predominantly pink, of course, but I was low on baby stuff since half of my stuff was still in the apartment in New York, so I needed it all. Now, I had everything that I could possibly need to raise a child.
The guests began to filter out in small groups after the present opening. It took over half an hour for everyone to leave, but when it was only me and Mary Margaret, I sighed and layed down on one of the couches.
"Emma, are you ok?" Mary Margaret asked in alarm. "You don't look well!"
"I'm fine," I mumbled. "Just really tired."
I woke up feeling warm. Someone was stroking my hair with one hand and supporting my head and back with the other. I opened my eyes to find azure blue ones staring back at me, so lovingly, so gently, that I thought it must be a dream.
"Good morning, Sleeping Beauty," Hook joked.
"Hey," I murmured. "How long have you been here?"
"About two hours, love," He said, helping me into a sitting position. I wanted to ignore his help, but sadly, I felt like I couldn't move an inch without his help.
"Why didn't you wake me?" I asked accusingly. "It's almost 6:30! I've been asleep for nearly three hours!"
"You looked so peaceful," He replied with a smile. "I didn't want to disrupt you."
"I'm hungry," I said a second later. Hook immediately got up in the direction of Mary Margaret's kitchen and came back holding several foil-covered plates of food.
"Mary Margaret and David went on a date," Hook said. "Henry is upstairs in one of the extra rooms. So, it's just us."
"Don't get any ideas," I said with a small smile.
"As you wish, love," Hook responded, handing me a fork and keeping one for himself. "Mary Margaret said these are your favorite foods."
I uncovered the plates to find a plateful of macaroni and cheese and several grilled cheese sandwiches on the other. "She was right," I replied, already reaching for a grilled cheese. "These dishes are called comfort food in this land."
"I see," Hook said as he tentatively took a bite of the macaroni and cheese. He seemed to like it, because he immediately reached for a second spoonful.
"Could I ask you something, please?" I asked tentatively, after several long minutes of comfortable silence.
"Anything, love," Hook responded without hesitation.
"Do you want to name the baby? I mean, only if you want. Because I'm not good at those kinds of things, but if you have a name you like-"
Hook effectively cut off my rambling by squeezing my hands and smiling so brightly that he put the stars to shame. "Yes, lass, I'd love to," He said with barely concealed excitement. "Thank you."
Hook took his new responsibility very seriously. He'd immediately went to David's laptop and started it up. I stared at him with wide eyes. When did he learn to use that?
Hook faced me with a smug smile. "David taught me about the Interweb." Hook explained. "He said that I can find anything I please on it, so I'm looking up baby names."
"The Interweb?" I asked in confusion. A moment later, I realized what he was trying to say. "Do you mean the Internet?"
"Yes, exactly, love," Hook responded. He brought the laptop over to the couch and sat down next to me.
"Love, where does one procure these devices?" He asked a moment later. "Because I would very much like to purchase a laptop."
"I'll take you somewhere after the baby is born," I promised. "They have all kinds of devices that you can choose from."
"There are more kinds of laptops?" Hook asked in wonder. "Love, I like your realm very much."
Unsurprisingly, Hook looked up names that were related to the sea. We scrolled through several pages of names together, keeping a running list of names that we liked.
"Syrena," Hook whispered, trying out the name on his lips. "That's the perfect name, Swan.
"I like it," I whispered. "Syrena Hope Swan-Jones."
"Jones?" Hook asked in confusion.
"She's your daughter," I squeezed his hand comfortingly. "So she takes on your name."
"It's settled, then," Hook smiled and rubbed his hand over my swollen belly. "Syrena Hope Swan-Jones."
"She likes it," I smiled as Sirena kicked Hook's hand.
"Aye, she does," Hook said with a grin. "Swan, you've made me happier than any man deserves to be. I don't know what I've done to deserve you and Syrena."
I just smiled and nodded, resting my head on Hook's shoulder as he shut the laptop down. I was still so scared to trust him. I couldn't be sure that he wouldn't just leave me one day.
Try something new, darling. It's called trust. His words rang in my head. I wanted to believe him so bad.
"Love, I'm not leaving you. I will stay by your side until the end of time." Hook said in that annoying mind-reading way of his. He must have seen my shocked expression because he grinned and said, "Open book, remember?"
I laughed softly. "I guess so," I whispered. "Will you stay here with me tonight?"
"Yes, love," Hook murmured. "As long as you want me."
"Always," I whispered, surprising myself. "Don't ever leave."
There was a pause while Hook processed this new mood swing. "As you wish, love," Hook whispered.
Hook's embrace was warm and comfortable, and before long, I was dozing off again. I was interrupted minutes later when a quiet knocking on the door startled both Hook and I. "Who could that be?" I asked drowsily. I looked up at the clock, and was surprised to see that it was still only eight. Choosing a name for Syrena hadn't taken very long because Hook found the perfect name rather quickly
"I'll get it, love," Hook said as he extricated himself from my arms carefully. "You stay here."
"I couldn't get up if I tried," I said after yawning. I pulled the blanket that Hook had draped over me closer to my body.
I heard Hook open the door. I couldn't make out what he or the other person were saying. I strained my voice, trying to place the distinctly feminine voice. A moment later, Hook came back into the living room, accompanied by Belle. I threw the blanket off to the side and attempted to sit up straighter.
"The Lady Belle wishes to speak to us," Hook said as he sat down next to me.
"Hey, Belle." I smiled and ignored Hook's overly formal greeting. "Is something wrong?"
"Hello, Emma," Belle smiled and took a seat at a couch adjacent to mine. "Nothing's wrong. I just have a gift from Rumple to pass along to you."
"But Gold is with Zelena," I said in confusion. "How is he giving us a gift?"
"He told me to give this to Killian at the right time," Belle explained. "He showed it to me before⦠confronting Peter Pan."
She pulled a very old box out of her purse. It was an intricately carved wooden box with a hinge that flipped upwards. "Rumple believes that you have earned this back many times over, Killian."
Hook accepted the box from Belle with a shaking hand. He peeked inside and gasped. "What is it?" I whispered. "Let me see!"
I couldn't contain my gasp when I saw what was inside the box either. "Is that your hand?" I asked in shock.
"Yes, love, it is." Hook whispered. He looked like he couldn't believe what he was staring at. It was a perfectly preserved hand, still curled into a fist and adorned with all of Hook's lost rings. One of Hook's fingers stroked a large ring with a green stone. "This was Liam's," He said softly. "I can't believe that Rumplestiltskin kept this."
"If Rumple were with us, he would give it back to you," Belle said softly. "I know that it would be very meaningful for both of you. But I wanted you to have it today."
"Why?" Hook said, his voice broken. "I've hurt you, Belle. I shot you and you lost your memory. You and Rumplestiltskin both suffered because of me."
Belle smiled, reaching for Hook's single hand and squeezing it. "Because I believe that people change. I saw it with Rumple, and I know that you are a better man now too." Belle whispered earnestly, her eyes gleaming with tears. "I believe in forgiveness."
"Thank you," Hook said, his voice choked with emotion. "Thank you, Belle."
"Belle, we have one small problem," I said, hating to end the emotional moment. "How do we reattach it?"
"Your magic will be strong enough." Belle replied. "I believe that it will work."
She closed her purse and got up. "Thank you," Belle said with a smile. "I imagine that you will want to be alone to put it back on."
"Belle, wait," I said as I heaved myself off of the couch. I wrapped the younger girl in a hug. "Thank you." I said, hoping to convey my appreciation. I know that Hook had been scared of hurting Syrena with his hook, but now that wouldn't be a problem. Now Hook would never have to worry and be insecure about his hook.
"Killian is going to be a father now. This is a new chapter in his life," Belle smiled. "It's about time that people began to see the man behind the hook."
Hook closed the door behind Belle and came back to sit next to me. He stared at his hand, hesitantly touching it as if to reassure himself that it was real.
"Take your coat off," I whispered softly.
"Well, love, if you want to see me naked, all you have to do is ask," Hook said with a grin and a suggestive wink.
"Stop it, idiot," I snapped. "I'm going to put your hand back on."
Hook took his leather jacket off without another word. I gently unbuttoned his vest and helped him shrug out of it, throwing it on the ground. I then slipped the black shirt that he wore under the vest off until his chest was bare. My heart clenched in pain when I saw all the scars that covered his body. I fingered a rather nasty looking one right above his heart. "I'm sorry." I whispered. "You've suffered so much."
"I've been a pirate for three hundred years, love," Hook smiled wryly. "It would be more surprising if I didn't have a multitude of scars."
"I've been trying to hide my feelings for too long," I said as I ran my hands down his muscular chest. "I was afraid to tell you how much you meant to me. I thought that you would leave me, like everyone else."
"Never, Emma," Hook vowed. "I will never leave you."
I loosened the straps that held his hook in place. The straps that criss-crossed all over his chest fell away in one fluid motion. I threw that off to the side with a grin. "You don't need that anymore."
"I guess not, love," Hook said with a small smile.
All that was left was the slip that concealed his stump. I took it off slowly, giving him an encouraging smile.
"I love you, with the hook or without it," I said, aware that I had finally said I loved him. I ran my hand over the scarred skin right where his wrist would be. "This doesn't disgust me."
I kissed the scarred, bumpy skin softly. "Did you feel that?" I asked shyly. "I mean, can you feel anything there anymore?"
"Yes, love, sometimes it still hurts," Hook said softly. "Sometimes it feels like it had just been cut off."
"I'm sorry." I stroked the damaged skin gently.
"It's alright, love." Hook sighed. "I inflicted pain upon others as well, so I suppose I deserve it."
"No, Captain Hook did those terrible things." I smiled. "You didn't. You're Killian. My Killian."
"Is that so, love?" Hook smiled, looking very pleased with my possessiveness.
"Yes." I said. "Get used to it, pirate."
I carefully reached for his preserved hand in the wooden box. It still felt warm in my hands. It felt just like a living, functioning hand. But it wasn't. It had been lying in a box for three hundred years.
I placed the severed hand by his remaining limb and closed my eyes, trying to focus my magic. I opened my eyes and saw that a ball of bright white light was pulsing in my hands and reaching out to envelop Killian's severed hand and arm. I tried to command my magic to fix what had been lost to him. Killian's eyes remained on my face the whole time, fully trusting, not resisting my touch or my magic.
The light of my magic faded away after a couple moments. "It worked." Killian whispered in joy. "Emma, you put it back!"
He flexed his fingers one by one and bent them, as if he couldn't believe what he was seeing. He put both of his hand in front of him and began laughing in happiness. Before I knew what was happening, he threw both of his hands around me in complete bliss. "Thank you." He whispered over and over into my hair. "Thank you so much."
"You're welcome, Killian," I smiled into his bare chest. Everything felt perfect. I had almost managed to forget about Zelena today. "Today was a fairytale."
Killian picked up his hook and placed it in one the pockets of his leather jacket. "I want to keep it," He explained. "To remind me of the person I used to be."
"And the person you've become," I said with a smile.
I fell asleep in his arms for the third time that night. And that was how Mary Margaret and David found them when they came home three hours later. Emma was wrapped in Killians arms, with one hand resting protectively on her belly and one on Killian's bare chest. Emma wore a smile of perfect contentment, as both of Killian's hands rested protectively on her rounded belly.
"How did that happen?" Mary Margaret whispered. "Hook has two hands!"
"We'll ask them tomorrow, " David smiled and squeezed his wife's hand.
"The pirate and his princess," Mary Margaret smiled at David. "They finally found their fairytale."
"Killian!" I hissed as I tried to shake the snoring pirate awake. "Killian, wake up!"
"Love, what's the matter?" Hook slurred, his voice still heavy with sleep. "It's still the middle of the bloody night!"
"Killian," I whimpered, trying to hold back my tears of pain. "Killian, please!"
Killian finally opened his eyes. His bleariness disappeared the moment he saw my tear stained face. "Emma, love, what's wrong?" He sat up, looking completely awake now.
"The baby." I gasped. "It's coming, I need to get to the hospital."
"Are you sure?" Killian asked, looking absolutely panicked. "I'm not ready!"
"I don't care, idiot," I hissed. "Go throw some clothes for Syrena into the baby bag and wake Mary Margaret and David."
"Okay, love, I'm going," Killian whispered, looking absolutely panicked. "Just hold on."
"Hurry," I whispered to his retreating form. I laid back down, trying to focus on breathing deeply. I couldn't stop the soft cries of pain that escaped my mouth every couple of minutes. When I heard panicked footsteps running down the stairs, I finally sighed in relief. Killian was coming back.
"Emma!" I recognized Mary Margaret's voice. "It's going to be alright, sweetheart. We'll be at the hospital in a couple minutes."
"Henry," I gasped. "Henry's upstairs, he'll be all alone if we leave!"
"I've already called Regina," Mary Margaret said soothingly. "She's already on her way, and she'll stay with Henry. Don't worry."
A couple minutes later, I was sitting in the backseat of David's truck with Killian. I squeezed Killian's newly reattached hand so fiercely that poor Killian probably still wished he had his hook. He didn't protest even though his fingers were probably numb.
It felt like we had been driving for years by the time we arrived at the hospital, but I knew that, rationally, it had only been a couple minutes.
"Breathe, love," Killian said encouragingly as a nurse frantically wheeled me to a delivery room. "Everything is going to be fine."
"Shut up!" I screeched. "You don't know what I'm feeling right now!"
To my horror, it was Dr. Whale who came into the delivery room. Why did it have to be Frankenstein delivering my child? "Oh no," I whimpered. "Not you!"
"Emma, it's ok," Dr. Whale said soothingly. "You're going to be ready to push in a couple minutes."
Killian was still whispering encouraging nonsense into my ear. I was sure that I had broken several bones in his hand by the time Whale deemed me ready to push. I pushed and screamed, feeling that my inside were being ripped to shreds.
"I can see the head," Whale said encouragingly. "Just a few more pushes!"
After what felt like years, the pain suddenly eased away. It was replaced by the insistent crying of a baby. I relaxed against the pillows, gasping for air as Killian moved away from my side to take a look at Syrena.
"7.4 pounds, 20 inches," Whale read off. "Perfectly healthy."
A minute later, a pink bundle was handed to me. Her hair was dark, like Killian's. "She's perfect," I smiled up at Killian wearily. Syrena immediately reached for my outstretched finger and grasped it tightly. "She looks just like you!"
"Aye, love," Killian said as he looked down at Syrena. I knew that he would deny it if I ever asked, but I could see the tears sparkling in his eyes. "She's perfect, just like you."
"Hold her," I whispered, handing Syrena to Killian. I carefully arranged his arms so that Syrena lay in the crook of his elbow.
"Thank you," Killian looked at me with a wide smile and watery eyes. "I love her already."
I knew that Syrena already had Killian wrapped around her finger. She was going to be an absolute Daddy's Girl. I smiled, feeling that everything in the world was right. David and Mary Margaret rushed into the room, cooing over Syrena and holding her in turns. And for one minute, everything felt absolutely normal.
But, of course, it didn't last. A nurse came rushing into the room, panic evident in her voice. "Zelena's coming, she broke through all the protection spells!"
"Killian!" I called frantically. "You have to take away my magic, it's the only way to protect Syrena!"
Killian and I kissed without a second thought. It was rushed and hurried, filled with panic and fear. I felt my magic leaving me, but it didn't matter as long as Zelena couldn't touch Syrena.
"How touching," Zelena's taunting voice floated across the room. "Congratulations on your bundle of joy, Emma. She'll be mine in just a minute."
Killian and David both moved towards Zelena at the same time, trying to form a barrier between the Witch and Syrena lying in my arms. "Don't touch her, your foul bitch," Killian hissed, pulling a sword out the scabbard on his side. "That's my daughter!"
"Oh, how sweet," Zelena laughed again. "You are so brave, pirate!"
Zelena waved her hand once and Killian, David and Mary Margaret were immediately frozen in place. Dr. Whale and the nurse fell against the couch on the side of the room, unconscious.
"Don't touch her," I begged the Witch. "Killian and I kissed. We kept our end of the deal!"
"I was going to take your daughter either way, stupid girl." Zelena hissed. "I just wanted to get rid of your magic at the same time."
"You tricked us." I said hollowly, hating how easily I'd fallen for Zelena's trap.
"No, you were just too blind to see the truth," Zelena smiled, and waved her hand again. Syrena disappeared from my arms. When I looked up, I saw that Zelena was cradling Syrena, a triumphant smile playing on her lips.
"Stop!" I cried, tears already forming in my eyes. "Please, take me instead!"
Zelena laughed before hitting me with one of her freezing spells. I could only watch as Zelena turned away and began walking towards the door.
"Stop, Zelena," Regina stood in front of the doorway. "You're not going to get away with this."
"Pay attention, Sis," Zelena replied triumphantly. "This is how you take away a happy ending!"
I unfroze instantly, as did everyone else in the room. Killian leaped towards Zelena immediately, his eyes fiery. "Give her back!" Killian hissed, his voice filled with hatred.
Zelena only smiled. "I didn't come just for your daughter, Emma," Zelena smiled wickedly. "I came for the pirate too."
As soon as the words left her mouth, Killian crumbled to the ground in a heap. "What did you do to him?" I screamed. "Killian! Undo it, bitch!"
"Too late, dearie," Zelena smiled. "He'll be dead in a matter of hours!"
"I'll wake him up!" I said defiantly. "He'll wake up when I kiss him!"
"But I didn't give him a sleeping curse," Zelena laughed. "That's too easy and so predictable. I used a spell that will slowly sap the life out of his body. He'll be dead before the afternoon, and there's nothing you can do to save him."
Zelena disappeared in a cloud of green smoke. I collapsed against my pillows weakly, unable to do anything but let the tears roll down my face. I wondered why I let my guard down, even for just a moment. Not only did Zelena have Syrena, she had taken Killian away from me.
"Emma, we'll get Syrena back," David vowed. "It's not over."
Mary Margaret squeezed my hand. "He's right. We can't give up and let her think that she won. We have to keep fighting."
"And Killian?" I whispered, the tears falling down my cheeks again. "I need him!"
I watched Dr. Whale and a nurse transfer Killian to a stretcher. "We may be able to medically lengthen what little time he has left," Whale said. "It might be enough time for you to find Zelena and defeat her."
"We will find her," Regina vowed. "We leave for the farmhouse immediately."
"I'm coming," I said, trying to get out of bed. I gasped as pain shot through my body.
"No," Regina snapped. "We don't have time to drag you there."
"Mary Margaret. stay with Emma," David instructed, his voice leaving no room for argument. "You're staying here."
Mary Margaret simply nodded and sat by my side. "Be careful, Charming," Mary Margaret whispered.
"We'll take the Merry Men and the dwarves," Regina said to David. "Let's go."
"Emma, it's not over yet," Mary Margaret whispered once Regina and David left. "They will find Zelena and get Syrena back. And Hook will make it, he loves you too much to leave you."
"No, Mary Margaret, it's over," I said, tears sparkling in my eyes. "I'm the Savior, and I'm not allowed to be happy. If I forget that, I get hurt and hurt those around me, like I did today. I don't get a break, and I most certainly don't get a happy ending."
Wow, this chapter got really out of hand! I think it's my longest chapter yet. Which is funny since it was the fastest chapter I've written. Anyways, I hope you aren't too angry at me. Yes, Zelena did take Syrena, but Regina's got light magic. Zelena doesn't stand a chance :)
So, next chapter is just going to be tying the loose ends together and finding a happy ending for poor Emma. That means chapter 10 will be last chapter. I've really enjoyed writing this story and reading all of your lovely comments. Thanks for everything!
About Killian getting his hand back- That was one of the first scenes I wrote for this whole story. I always planned to give Killian his hand back, because I do believe that Rumplestiltskin would hang on to it. I get that the hook is a part of him, and I won't forget that in the last couple of chapters. Let me know what you think, either way. :)
Review please! Did you guys like the name I choose for Emma and Killian's baby? What do you think of Zelena taking Syrena/cursing Killian?
