Claire POV
Bereavement
That single word kept running through my head and how I had experienced a sudden loss. The one person who protected me from everything and kept me safe was gone. I had no feeling left inside me, I couldn't smile or laugh. I was completely emotionless except from the feelings of guilt and grief. The last two days kept repeating over me: the paramedics taking her body to the morgue, the quick funeral arrangements. We dressed her in a loose black gown; her hair was left loose with a pearl necklace around her neck.
You could hear the sound of my heels clicking on the road, Oliver on one side with Myrnin on the other. It was the quietest and peaceful Morganville had been in months. Every vampire was walking with us as well as a few humans such as Richard Morrell and Ms Day.
Everyone was dressed in black and some in leather, but it's not like the vampires had a choice anyway unless they wanted to be scorched. It was midday and the hot sun was at its highest, many of us had black parasols. The church service had gone quick with a lot of us expressing how much Amelie did for us and how she'll be missed.
I was beginning to feel uncomfortable in my black shift dress, not because of the heat but general anxiety. I could see people looking out their windows as we passed by, maybe filled with relief or uncertainty. We continued to walk along the dusty Texan road, everyone was filled with grief.
As we walked into the graveyard the pallbearers carried the coffin to the grave, dozens of roses were placed on the top of the coffin. Everyone had placed a rose as a sign of respect. Father Joe began reading prayers whilst the coffin was lowered into the ground. The words were going into my head but coming out the other side, I wasn't taking anything in.
Myrnin gripped my hand with his, he was hard as stone. I couldn't imagine what he must of felt either. Amelie always looked out for him too, always was there for him even when he was at his most insane. She was his best friend.
We watched as the grave was filled with soil, I felt my heart break all over again. "She's really gone." I sobbed softly.
"Yeah, I guess she is." Myrnin whispered and looked down.
I looked at the tombstone and read the epitaph:
Miss Amelie Bishop
A hero and a leader;
A mother, a friend, a protector and a role model to many.
God Bless Her Soul
I felt a tear slip down my cheek; she was every one of those to me.
I let go of Myrnin's hand as Oliver passed me a bouquet of white roses. I walked over to the grave and placed the large bouquet on the fresh soil, I gripped the parasol tightly. I did the sign of the cross before turning around. She was buried next to Sam Glass; it was probably a really hard day for Michael as well. I guessed he was having memories of Sam's funeral.
Some of the vampires began to place white candles down and lit them, as well as placing more flowers down. But not just on Amelie's grave, also Sam's who died for her. We all had a few minutes of silence before we began to walk back to the Day House for the Wake.
Myrnin wrapped his arm around me; my parasol covered him perfectly protecting him from the blazing sunlight.
"You gonna be okay?" I asked him, he was a whole head taller than I was.
"Well in terms of the sane side of me, I guess so." He smiled slightly at me.
"Good." I replied. Myrnin scared me sometimes, he was so unpredictable yet there was something so thrilling about it.
Oliver POV
I didn't know what to feel – grief I guessed. Amelie was one of my allies, the most powerful one.
I sighed and walked inside the Day House, this was where Amelie had peace and quiet. Where she was hardly disturbed – most of the time. The Founder houses always had some sort of calming feel to them, especially this one.
Ms Day kept her house clean and neat, it was tidy and filled with antique décor. The walls were creams and beiges and the floor was a dark oak, it was quite comforting. I peeled off my leather, holding it with my left arm before placing it on the side.
I walked further into the house and entered the dining room. The table was filled with food, but I didn't exactly have an appetite. Everyone begin to fill the house. I spotted Richard Morrell, the current mayor and walked over to him.
"Richard, may I speak with you alone?" I asked him politely, he nodded leaving Hannah and Monica alone.
"Yes Oliver?" He asked.
"After this we need to go back to city hall, Amelie left her will and we need to think of temporary arrangements." I told him. There wasn't exactly an elders council anymore, it dispatched long ago. The vampires either died of the old disease which threatened the existent of vampires or they left for Blacke. Therefore in a situation like that, the mayor and older vampires decide the temporary measures.
He nodded at me before walking away, I sighed it wasn't going to be easy.
Claire POV
Me and Myrnin were just sitting on the floor, leaning against the wall. Other vampires had already expressed their condolences and there wasn't much to do except mourn. We were both in her old office; we had been sitting there for about an hour – mainly in silence. The sun was beginning to set.
"Well on the bright side, I only have to walk down the alley afterwards." Myrnin smiled. I chuckled slightly, he was always trying to make me happy, or laugh; even if it was the wrong time.
"I miss her." I sighed.
"Same here." Myrnin responded and knocked his head back on the wall.
"It's just strange now, like there's no one to keep us in line." I said. It made me think of all the crazy things Myrnin would try to do.
"I think Ollie might try." Myrnin laughed flashing his white teeth. I laughed with him, Myrnin always tried to wind Oliver up.
I stood up, it was dark and I needed to sleep. "Come on Myrnin, I think we should all go home." I suggested, he nodded and stood up.
I walked out the room most of the vampires were leaving; I nodded at them before making my way into the living area. Michael and Eve were nowhere in sight so I had to leave on my own. I grabbed my jacket before going back into the office.
"Bye Myrnin." I said softly, before hugging him. I decided to take the portal.
"Bye, little Claire." He grinned at me before letting go. I watched him leave the room and shook my head at him. I turned around and imagined my room. It slowly appeared and opened; I stepped through and embraced the warmer sensation of the Glass House. I stripped off my clothes before climbing into bed; I was too tired to bother with anything else.
Oliver POV
Me and Richard were in Amelie's old office, it was probably one of the few rooms that hadn't been damaged. Bizzie had managed to find the will; it sat there on the desk in a thick cream envelope along with the Founders symbol on it.
"Oliver." Richard said and nodded at the envelope.
I sighed in return and picked it up, it wasn't as thick as I expected. I broke the wax seal and began to read the paper, at the bottom it was signed with her signature.
"Well, do you have an idea?" Richard asked staring directly at me.
It was exactly as I expected it to be.
If under such circumstances would occur and if thy need a new founder, then the next to lead Morganville shall be:
Miss Claire Danvers
Oohhhh, that's a bit of a cliff hanger.
