"Have you any plans of marrying?"
"Eh? Why would you suddenly ask that?"
"Just answer the damn question, stupid woman!"
"Stop calling Haru stupid! Baka-dera"
"Che,"
"Actually, Haru thinks it'd probably be best if she just focuses herself on Sora, so boys are not Haru's concern"
"Not your concern? Oi, that pretty face of yours won't last long"
"Hahi! Did you just call Haru pretty?"
"W-what? I didn't! you must be hearing things! Stupid woman!"
"Yes you did! Haru heard you clearly! Aho-dera!"
The aroma of the breakfast Haru was making almost filled the whole house. She had woken up a little bit earlier and began to prepare food not just for her and Sora, but also for her 'husband'.
They figured it would be wise if he were to stay at Haru's house every time he's in Japan, just to make the whole situation believable for the kid. They'd been extra cautious around the boy after being once questioned why they were acting a bit distant for a married couple.
The first time Gokudera agreed to stay the night, he figured that it would be improper for him to sleep on the same bed as Haru knowing that their relationship was purely just pretend for the child's sake. But the brunette boy woke up one night and assumed that his parents were having a fight as they slept separately.
Gokudera reluctantly moved to Haru's bedroom but slept on the floor. Although, just like before the young lad woke up in the middle of the night and unexpectedly entered the room, questioning them, yet again why they don't sleep on the same bed. They figured that they had no choice but to make everything believable for the boy and shared the same bed, yet making sure to keep a decent distant between them.
Though sometimes Haru would find herself waking up in snuggled in Gokudera's arms and would immediately push him away with a face as red as a beet and a heart thrashing inside her chest.
"Mm smells nice, " A voice said, entering the kitchen.
"Ah good morning! Sit down I'm almost finished cooking" she turns to see him all dressed up in his black suit with a red polo underneath and black tie. "You're dressed early" she remarked, placing the freshly cooked food on an empty plate.
"I'm heading to the Vongola base in Namimori" He explained. "Juddaime called"
Haru stiffened for a second, questions swarming in her head. She looked up at him. "D-do you think… do you think he knows?"
Gokudera looked away before casually replying, "Probably"
Haru looked at him with her eyebrows slightly arched upwards. She was obviously concerned, mainly because she believes that his friendship with Tsuna that he treasured so much might be jeopardize all because of her. She made Gokudera lie to a friend that he very much looked up too. He lied about not knowing how Haru had been all these years. He kept the child a secret and now he's living under the same roof as them and has taken Tsuna's role as the child's father.
She made him betray Tsuna.
"I'm sorry…" She mutters.
Gokudera glanced at her and sighs as he sees her looking so distraught. "It's fine, it's not like he'd kill me because of it or anything." he half-jokingly said. He didn't want to think about it, but sometimes emotions can make people do unexpected things. Tsuna might still be uneasy when it comes to hurting people during their battles, especially the innocent ones. But from where Gokudera was standing was he even counted as one?
"Papa?" The two adults turned to see Sora groggily walking towards them, dragging a stuffed bear along as he rubbed his lazy eyes. "You're leaving already?" He asks.
Gokudera leans down to pick him up. "Papa has to go to work Sora, but I'll be back again soon okay?" He says and kissed the child on the forehead.
"I'll miss you," The child voiced as he wrapped his arms around the man's neck.
"Met too," Gokudera pats the boy's back.
"Ah! I almost forgot," Haru rushed towards the kitchen counter where a bento was placed. "Here,"
The boy looked at the two admiringly as he waited for Gokudera's response.
The silver haired man took the lunch box and leaned down to kiss Haru on the cheeks. "T-thanks" he said awkwardly. The two felt the heat rushing to their faces and slightly looked away. Even though they've been keeping this act for quite some time now the intimacy that they were supposed to portray in the relationship was still uncomfortable.
Gokudera bid them goodbye for the last time getting into his car and driving to Namimori. Along the way, he rehearsed the lines that he would say as soon as he meets his boss. He would explain everything, from how he unintentionally found out that Haru was pregnant and only respected Haru's wish of keeping the child a secret. He clicked his tongue as a distressing thought dawned on him.
How would he say that the child grew up and regarded him as his father?
As he got to Vongola's base he headed straight to his boss' office. Knocking twice he twisted the knob and took a deep breath preparing himself for what was to come.
Even though his boss' black leather chair was turned to him, Gokudera knew that Tsuna sat there as he could sense the cause of the unwelcoming atmosphere that surrounded the room radiating from its direction. He thne noticed several pictures of Haru and Sora scattered on the floor across Tsuna's desk, as if it had been thrown out of rage.
Gokudera's eyes widened as he saw his own pictures.
A picture of him entering Haru's house; picking up and placing the boy on his shoulders; leaving the house and coming back last night. And his eyes widened as he saw a picture of him kissing haru. Irritation began filling him as the picture made it seem as if he had done a bit more than kissing Haru on the cheek.
It looked as if he kissed her on the lips.
All of the explanation that he was prepared to say vanished in thin air as he stiffly stood by door, staring down at the pictures. No words attempted to come of his mouth.
"Why?"
Gokudera's head jerked up at the sound of his boss' voice.
"All this time… you knew" Tsuna spoke again, his words coming out as a whisper but was audible enough due to the deafening silence of the room. "I finally acknowledge you as my right hand man and yet…" He paused, swiftly turning his chair around. Gokudera avoided his gaze. Tsuna abruptly stood up and slammed his hands flat on his desk. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Juddaime, I'm so—"
"I don't need your apology," Tsuna softly yet it felt cold as he stared indifferently at his trembling guardian. "I just want to understand why,"
Gokudera began explaining everything from the beginning; stressing the part that his intimacy with Haru was only for show and none of those acts were genuine. "We were only doing that because…" He trails off, dreading to say the next lines. "I pretended to be the boy's father…"
Everything went by so fast that he didn't get to dodge the attack and found himself on down on the floor with a hand on his cheek. Tsuna gripped his collar and pulled him back up a familiar flame emitting from Tsuna's forehead as he stared at his 'right-hand man' with raging eyes and a fist prepared to strike at any moment.
This was the first time he had seen his boos look at him like this, eyes burning with fury and looked as if he wanted to kill his guardian right there and then.
"Fighting with your subordinate will do you no good, Tsuna"
The source of the familiar voice suddenly appeared beside them, looking at the two men intently through his black fedora. The room fell silent, all sides waiting for something to happen.
Tsuna's flame disappeared slowly as he released his grip from Gokudera. He turned his back to him.
"Do you suppose you'll get Haru and your son back by beating up Gokudera?" Reborn stated. "Did it ever cross your mind that it'll only make Haru hate you more, for hurting a person close to her?"
Tsuna silently made his way behind his desk and sat on his chair and rested his forehead on his laced hands with his elbows propped on his table for support.
He didn't know what to say, nor what to do. His emotions are getting the best of him. He couldn't think straight. All he wanted was to get Haru and his son back and yet her hatred towards him is preventing her from perceiving things clearly, to understand the real reason why he left her.
Over the years he had tried to forget that day he almost lost her to his enemy from another famiglia. He tried to forget that terrified look on Haru's face as she was held captive by one of the boss' underlings. The man wrapped his arm around Haru's neck as he pointed the gun to the side of her head. Fortunately, Yamamoto had acted in time and used his sword to injure the man, loosening his grip around Haru's neck, in which she used as an opportunity to run towards Tsuna. But then the sound of a gun being shot echoed throughout the abandoned factory, and the next thing Tsuna saw ripped his heart into two. Haru's body collapsed on the cold hard ground in the pool of her own blood.
That was the day Tsuna realized how involving himself with Haru will just put her life in constant danger. He left her to keep her from harm that he was engaging himself into. He left her because he was weak. But that was years ago. Now he's come back stronger and is much more capable of protecting her.
"I'm really sorry, Juddaime." Gokudera's eyes were fixed onto the carpeted floor, unable raise his head up, disgraced by the realization that he had betrayed his most-respected boss. He was in no position to even be called as Tsuna's right-hand man anymore.
A knock on the door broke the silence followed by footsteps and the sight of the rain Guardian. "Oh, Gokudera! I didn't know you were here," Yamamoto casually greeted.
The storm guardian clicked his tongue and furrowed his eyebrows in annoyance on his comrade's insensitivity on the heavy atmosphere that was currently engulfing the room.
As Yamamoto's eyes landed on the sulking brunette by the far end of the room, his tone changed. "Er, Is this a bad time? Maybe I should just come back later." Before he could retreat, Reborn spoke; stopping his tracks.
"What is it Yamamoto?"
"Tsuna is needed in the meeting room. Alcapone of the Camorra Famiglia wants to speak with him." He informs.
Reborn glanced at his former student, "I'll settle this right now if I were you. We can't afford you being aloof because of your troubled mind." The hitman stated before making his way out.
"I'll be on my way too, then." Yamamoto says, casting a concerned glance between the two before finally closing the door.
Once more, they were left with nothing but silence. Both men at loss for words and was waiting for the other to end the conversation. After a few seconds, Gokudera decided to break the ice.
"Juddaime," He began before bowing his head along with his body. "I'm really really sorry."
Tsuna kept his face concealed and his eyes closed, not wanting to spare even one glance at his 'right-hand man'. He felt betrayed. It was upsetting to know that his best friend had been keeping his own son a secret from him all these years. Even though he could understand that it was only due to Haru's request, still, he truly believed that his subordinate was someone who he thought would never, not even once, keep a secret from him. Yet here he is, bowing before him and asking for forgiveness.
For a moment Tsuna pitied the storm guardian. He was caught up between a mess that he shouldn't've been a part of in the first place. But his feelings are getting in the way of his judgement and making him think of things that only adds fire to his fury. His mind was chaotic and speaking with raging emotions would only make matters worse.
Finally, Tsuna stood up. He kept his eyes looking straight ahead and walking pass his guardian without even acknowledging his apologetic stance. His hand gripped the knob and was halfway out before Gokudera spoke,
"I'll help you talk to Haru, I promise"
Without a word, without a glance, Tsuna exited the room.
