"I'm sorry, haru" he muttered, sitting next to her hospital bed with a downcast look on his face.
"Hahi?" She tilted her head to one side.
"Because of me... " he trails off, shutting his eyes close as his hands that rested on her bed turned into a fist. "You almost-"
She placed a gentle hand on his and he immediately looks up to meet her tender eyes. She smiles warmly at him despite the fact that her life was almost taken byhis enemy. "It's not your fault, Tsuna. Besides, you did your best to protect me right?" She spoke cheerfully. "If you weren't there, Haru would've been gone by now" she let out a forced laugh though her voice wavered inadvertently and in an instant the young man had wrapped his slender arms around her frail body.
"I'm really sorry," he murmured.
"Mou~ Haru told you it's… fine..."
He felt her body begin to tremble and he held her tighter that she should've felt suffocated but doesn't.
"I'm fine….I'm fine…" She repeated over and over. Gradually, her smile faded as she tried her best not to let the tears fall, but as the previous traumatizing events began replaying in her mind she couldn't help but to weep onto his chest as she clung on him like a child.
"Go on, cry as much as you want. I'll be here" he reassures her as he strokes her back.
"I won't let anything happen to you again"
Haru's eyes opened so casually as if she hadn't just woken up from a deep sleep. It was as if she had just been lost in her trail of thoughts all throughout the night. She slowly sat up and brushed the remaining tears flowing from her eyes with the back of her hand.
Why did I dream of that?
She turns to her side, expecting to see the silver haired man but found the space next to her empty. He didn't come home again? She thought.
Her eyes then glanced at the digital clock on the bedside table beside her 7:56am it glared red.
"I overslept!" She exclaims as she abruptly stands up making her vision blur a bit from the sudden movement. She quickly puts on her robe and made her way downstairs to prepare breakfast, only to find her son already eating on the dining table.
"Sora?"
"Good morning, mama!"
"Who..." She gestures to the different varieties of food laid in front of her. "Who made these?" She questioned. The food doesn't look like your ordinary bacon, eggs and toast/rice for breakfast but something she thought was a bit more foreign.
"I see you're finally awake," Gokudera entered the dining area with a plate on his hand. He placed it on the table. "I figured I should cook us breakfast, since someone here seems to have overslept" he ruffled Haru's hair before making his way back to the kitchen. Only then did Haru notice that his silver hair was tied up and he wore a white apron underneath his grey shirt and black jeans. She smiled at the view, finding it amusing to see Gokudera in such attire.
She sat next to her son and stared at the food placed in front of her. "Isn't this a bit too much? It's just breakfast you know?" She shouted for Gokudera to hear as she debated on which food to taste first. It all looked so delicious and seemed as if it was bought from a 5-star restaurant. She reckoned the dishes were Italian.
"I don't think we'd be able to finish all these" she added once Gokudera entered the room with another dish in hand. He places it on the table and removes his apron, hanging it on the chair that he sat on.
Haru took a bite from the food on her plate and her eyes widened.
"What? D-does it taste... bad?" Gokudera asks anxiously.
"It's... It's... SO DELICIOUS-DESU!" She exclaims, her eyes glistening with delight.
He smirked and laid back on his chair crossing his arms as he held his chin proudly at her remark. "Of course," Haru just smiled at him and continued eating.
And then the doorbell rang.
"I'll get it," Gokudera immediately said and stood up even before Haru could speak.
Gokudera's dish made Haru question why she never made him cook their meals. She would always tell him that it is a woman's job to serve her family and that he should just focus on his work. Although this time, Haru might have just had a change of mind.
Several footsteps earned her attention and she turned its source.
She froze on her spot and her eyes slowly widens. A gap formed on her lips but no words came out, instead she just sat there unmoving as she stared at the familiar brunette standing beside Gokudera.
"Ah Haru, I forgot to mention that juddaime's coming over" Gokudera said awkwardly as he scratches the back of his head. "Sora come here, juddaime has a gift for you"
"Sora..." Tsuna stared at the boy who sat at the table. Sora merely stared at the stranger across him. "Don't you remember me? I was the one who gave you your ball back." he smiled warmly.
"Ah! Sora remembers!" The boy immediately moved towards them and Haru didn't know why she couldn't reach out and stop her son.
She observed the two from her seat, noting how the boy resembled Tsuna very much. Not just because of his looks. Like him, Sora has a very pure and kind heart. Her son's compassion for others was shown when he helped his friend who almost fell down the river and ended up going home with bruises his knee but was grinning at her. She scolded him of course, for disobeying her and doing something that was too risky. But she also acknowledged his bravery for not leaving his friend behind.
Her son wasn't that courageous. But for others he was willing to do anything for his friends.
Just like Tsuna.
Sora hurriedly unwrapped the present in his and his eyes were clearly filled with delight and excitement upon seeing what was inside. "A robot!" The boy exclaims.
"Do you like it?" Tsuna asked.
The boy nodded eagerly. "Thank you...uh" He paused realizing that he did not know the man's name.
"Uncle," Haru couldn't look at them in the eye as she spoke coldly.
Tsuna looks at her for a moment, lips forming a thin line. He was hurt that Haru still didn't want their son to know the truth about him, but was thankful that this time she didn't push him away.
"That's right," He kneels on one knee and ruffled the boy's hair affectionately. "I'm your Uncle Tsuna"
Breakfast went on; Haru remained silent and Gokudera tried his best to keep the atmosphere lively. Tsuna heart was filled with happiness as he conversed with his son but cannot overlook Haru's sullenness, causing him to throw glances at her constantly to which she effortlessly ignored. As they finished Haru immediately began washing the dishes, paying no mind with Gokudera's attempt to help her.
"Gokudera-kun," Tsuna says as he entered the kitchen. "Sora's calling for you,"
Gokudera cast one last glance at Haru before nodding at his boss and exited the kitchen to find Sora.
Haru didn't need to turn. She could already feel his presence beside him and she was annoyed at how her heart was pounding inside her. She quickly placed the remaining dish on the rack and wiped the kitchen counters, hoping that he'd just leave if she continues her act.
"Haru can we talk for a moment?"
"Don't you think you should be going now? I don't mean to be rude but it is getting late, don't you have work to do tomorrow?" She asks with her back still turned to him, not bothering to give him a glance.
"I'm not leaving until you hear my explanation. I didn't want to leave you but I had to, Haru." He stated.
"That's enough," she balled her fists, "Just leave us alone. We're happy now, so please—"
"Please understand. I didn't have a choice!"
"You had a choice!" she exclaims. She quickly turns to face him, her glaring eyes that were filled with tears tore his soul part. "and you chose to leave because up until then you still loved someone else! Up until then I still wasn't enough for you!" her body was shaking with resentment
"That's not true!"
"Stop lying—"
"Mama?"
The two quickly turns to find their son standing by the doorway, a worried look completely evident on the child's face. Haru immediately tried to compose herself as the boy rushed to her side and held her hand. She looks away; trying to conceal her tear stained face.
"Mama, What's wrong? Why are you crying?" the boy worriedly asks.
"No, Sora." Haru forced a smile. "Mama's not crying."
"T-That's right, Sora." Tsuna interjects, earning the boy's attention.
"You made mama cry…"
"No, were just having a conversation—"
"You made mama cry!" The boy yelled as he clung onto Haru's skirt. "I hate you! Go away!"
Tsuna's eyes widened and his mouth agape. He felt his temperature drop and his hands began to sweat. He could feel the loud beating of his heart inside his chest. He had to do something. Anything. He can't afford to leave like this. He's already miserable just by the fact that he can't seem to diminish Haru's hatred towards him. He wouldn't be able to bear it if even his own son would detest him. "No. I didn't—"
"I really think you should go now, Sawada-san" Haru utters; her eyes avoiding his wounded expression.
Gokudera then enters the kitchen and was taken aback heavy atmosphere. He glanced between Haru, and his boss. "What happened?"
"Let's go to bed, Sora" Haru picked the child in her arms and swiftly made their way upstairs, ignoring the silver-haired man's protest. Gokudera turned to his boss.
"What happened?"
"I tried to explain, but she didn't let me finish. She hates me so much that she doesn't even want to listen to what I have to say." Tsuna replies dejectedly.
"That stupid woman," Gokudera pinched the bridge of his nose.
Tsuna shook his head, "Its fine, I completely understand. I'd be angry if someone did that to me too." His downcast eyes stared blankly on the floor. "I left her without a proper explanation and now I'm forcing myself back into her life. Up until now… all I've ever done is hurt her." He clutched his fist.
'I hate you! Go away!'
"And now… even my son hates me." His lips quavered as he breathed heavily, tears edging his eyes. "After all these years, I still haven't change. I still manage to mess things up," He chuckles bitterly.
"Juddaime…"
Tsuna turns to look back at his storm guardian. "Thank you for inviting me over, Gokudera-kun. I appreciate it a lot," he smiles. "But I think it's time for me to go,"
"Are you… giving up?" the guardian carefully asks.
"Only for the mean time. There's no point in talking with her mind filled with rage. She won't be able to think rationally and we'll only end up fighting again. I'll take things slow. I don't care how long it'll take for her to warm up to me again. I'm determined to get them back even if it takes months, years. I don't care. "I'd even be okay if my son would only ever acknowledge me as his Uncle… if that's what Haru wants, as long as she forgives me, I'll accept all consequences." Tsuna declared.
The two made their way out of the house. Tsuna unlocks his car and the silver haired man quickly rushed to his side. "I'll drive," he says.
"Thanks, but I can manage," the brunette enter and sat behind the wheels, closing the car door and rolling down his tinted window. He thanked his guardian once more.
'I know you might not ever return my feelings, but as long as I get to be with you like this on Haru's appreciation day, I'll be satisfied with that.' Tsuna smiled as he suddenly recalled a distant memory of Haru.
"Isn't it ironic how she used to say that she wants to be with me forever, yet now she doesn't even want to see me and her I am trying to win her back." he said.
"Do you regret it?"
Tsuna shook his head and looked up at his right hand man. "The only thing I regret is leaving her behind," his eyes caught sight of a figure by the window on the upper floor of the house; certain that it was Haru. 'I'll make it up to you, I promise'. He bid his guardian goodbye and drove back to Namimori.
Another chapter yey! Are you guys liking it so far? Is the story too slow or too fast? Also please forgive me if they seem a bit ooc, but I'm really trying my best to keep them in character. It's just that it's been years since I've watched the series so I'm no longer that familiar with their personalities or their quirks anymore. Although I do plan on re-reading the manga and watching the series again to get myself acquainted with each of the characters traits. Anyway, please leave a review and favorite or follow if you still haven't. See you on the next chapter! Ciao~ Also how can I get myself a beta reader? :D
