Don't Own.

I'm sorry it's been such a long time since I updated, I've really had no inspiration to write in the last few years. I'm hoping that will change.

So here's chapter 5, hope you like.

...

Spencer woke up at 7:00 am; he was still tired but made himself get out of bed. Both he and Penelope hadn't slept well, every time she moved in her sleep she would wake up in tears because of her hand. Spencer wasn't surprised, he was almost certain that it was broken but still Penelope had refused to let him take her to Emerge.

Finally at around 4:00 am Penelope had fallen asleep and hadn't woken up since. Spencer made his way to the bathroom quietly. He wanted to let her sleep for now but he was taking her to the hospital once she woke up, he wasn't going to take no for an answer.

He shook his head, he knew that Penelope was stubborn but he didn't understand why she was being so pig-headed about going to the hospital. She was obviously in a lot of pain.

Spencer made his way past the bathtub and over to the toilet where he relieved his full bladder. When he turned he noticed something shiny by the floor of the bathtub and went to it. He bent down and picked up the empty wine bottle. Looking back towards the bathroom door, things started to make more sense.

Spencer had been too concerned about Penelope's wellbeing to see it the night before, but it was obvious that she was tipsy, and she hadn't been when she left Aaron's place. Spencer wondered if she had hurt her hand because she was drunk and now felt too embarrassed about it? Spencer wasn't sure, he seemed to be missing something important but he couldn't put his finger on it.

Spencer walked back through the bedroom and into the kitchen. He placed the wine bottle on the counter and got the coffee maker fired up. He had a feeling that Penelope wouldn't be interested in breakfast but he knew she wouldn't be functioning until she had her morning cup of caffeine, neither would he, really.

He hoped that the scent of freshly brewed coffee would seep into her mind and wake her up, he didn't have the heart to wake her up himself after the night she'd had but the sooner they got to the hospital the better.

Spencer placed a piece of bread in the toaster for himself and rooted through Penelope's cupboards looking for peanut butter. He'd only stayed over at her place once before, the very first night they'd had sex, and in the morning he hadn't stayed for breakfast so he wasn't sure where she kept anything.

It took him a while but just as the toaster dinged, he found what he was looking for at the very back of the cupboard above the sink. The small jar of peanut butter looked like it hadn't been used in quite a while. He turned it over to find the expiration date and was startled when he heard a knock at the door.

He put the peanut butter down and walked to the front door, he looked through the peephole and saw Dave on the other side, standing tensely as he waited for Penelope to come to the door.

Spencer frowned; he wondered why Dave would be here so early in the morning.

Still, he unlocked the door and pulled it open. Dave was definitely surprised to see him on the other side and it showed on his face for just a moment, then his look darkened and he grumbled something under his breath.

"Hey Dave," Spencer said with a smile "what are you doing here?"

"I should ask you the same thing?" Dave replied gruffly.

Spencer was surprised by his friend's tone and raised a brow at him "Penelope hurt her hand so I came over to get her to the hospital."

"And then you stayed the night?" Dave asked, looking Spencer up and down. The young genius was still in his clothes from the day before, and they were noticeably wrinkled.

Spencer felt a bit panicky at the implication in Dave's voice. Had the older profiler found them out? They had been so careful. Would he say anything to Hotch or the rest of the team?

"I didn't want to leave her alone," Spencer said "she broke her hand, it's pretty bad. I stayed merely for support though and slept on the couch." Spencer was lying through his teeth and he wasn't sure why he was defending himself to Dave, it's not like it was a crime to sleep over at a co-workers house.

But Dave was giving off this vibe that put Spencer on the defensive.

Dave deflated for a moment, and concern entered his voice for a split second "Is she alright? How did she break her hand?"

"She's fine," Spencer lied again, hoping that Penelope wouldn't chose this moment to come out of the bedroom and catch him in a lie "she said that she hit it on the bathroom sink. She's just sleeping now."

"Hard enough to break it?" Dave enquired.

Spencer felt himself shrugging, "She didn't go into much detail, she seemed quite embarrassed."

Dave didn't question him further and Spencer found himself asking "So, what are you doing here?"

"Penelope and I had breakfast plans but I guess that's not happening now. Tell her I'll give her a call later, to see how she's feeling."

The edge to Dave's voice was back but Spencer didn't question it. Dave turned and headed out the door and back to his car. Spencer stood watching him, the whole interaction had been strange to him, he needed to figure out whether the man knew something about his and Penelope's relationship or if he was just having an off day.

Spencer closed the door and made his way back to his toast, which was cold now and he had to start over.

A moment later Penelope walked out of the bedroom. Her eyes were puffy like she had been crying again and she looked almost relieved to see Spencer.

"Morning," he said to her "How are you feeling?"

Penelope pouted "Does your offer still stand?" she asked, wincing as she held out her swollen hand "Cause I'm pretty sure I need to go to the hospital."

"Of course I'll take you, I was worried I was going to have to call in reinforcements," Spencer said, he already had a message written out to Derek and was just waiting to hit send if it came down to it.

Penelope groaned "No arguments here," she said "Sorry I was such a bitch last night."

"No problem," Spencer said, grabbing a travel mug off the drying rack and filling it with coffee. He knew how she liked it so he poured a good helping of milk into it and a scoop of sugar "Here you are," he said placing the cup on the counter.

"Oh, thank you Spencer!" Penelope said gratefully, walking over and savoring her first sip, it was just the way she liked it and the perfect start to this rather shitty day.

Spencer helped Penelope get ready and then they headed out the door. Keys in hand Spencer locked Penelope's front door and then helped her get comfy in Ester's front seat. He placed a pillow on her knee so that she could rest her aching hand on it.

Then he hurried to the driver's side and jumped in.

They pulled out of her parking spot and onto the street, headed to the closest hospital.

"Oh by the way," Spencer said making conversation as they drove "before I forget, Dave came by this morning, he said you guys had breakfast plans. I told him about your hand so he said that he would give you a call later to check in. He seemed a bit off, I had to fib a bit about the situation just in case he asks…"

Spencer was focused on his driving and didn't see the way Penelope had tensed up at the mention of Dave.

They didn't have any breakfast plans and she obviously hadn't been imagining the shadow she had seen when she was at Aaron's, her stomach churned and she stared at Spencer while he chatted away, what would he say when everting came out? Now that Dave knew she couldn't see it staying secret for long.

She just hoped her team would be able to forgive her.
