We come to a stop at the side of the Regent Hotel.
Marla Singer's cigarette rests between her fingers as I stand there, looking conveniently obedient.
She flicks her cigarette and glances up into my still eyes, smirking.
She takes a long drag from her cigarette and closes her eyes, smiling as the nicotine passes through her body. The smoke comes from her mouth and into the chilly, evening air.
I shiver.
She puts her hand behind my head and kisses me. Her mouth tastes like an ashtry, I don't mind.
I don't kiss back and her lips linger on mine for a moment before she pulls away, and takes yet another drag from her now stub of a cigarette before she extinguishes it under her shoe.
"Goodnight." Marla says, lighting another cigarette and turning the corner and out of my sight.
Night, I say.
I am Joe's aching desire for Marla Singer's Newport kiss.
