Kai smiled, another day with Iruka-sensei. He was so nice, unlike her cold senseis back home. This was the ideal teacher, a nice person well loved by all students and handsome. She felt her hearbeat pick up. He was very cute. She admitted that much but nothing serious was going to happen. He was a teacher and besides, he liked all his students, each one got an ample amount of attention. Kai sighed.
He was nothing like Kakashi. Physically and personality wise, both were on polar ends of the spectrum. Iruka equaled kind, sweet, loving, tan, cute, everything good. Kakashi equaled squat. Distant, cold, emotionless, rude, weird, hidden, handsome but that positive thought was shot down his actions and personality.
She groaned and pulled herself up out of bed. Naruto had invited her to train with team seven, or what was left of it from what she could tell. She wondered who was the missing person and what happened to him. But her mind was emptied of any previous thoughts when she realized that she only had thirty minutes before she needed to arrive at school.
Rushing through her daily routine, Kai ran out the door and into Kakashi. She fell down on her butt and gave a grunt of pain. Looking up she saw a shocked face and dripping hair. Was it raining outside?
He offered her a hand, "Careful where you run." He pulled her up and she gave him a grimace. 'Is it so hard for him to say sorry.'
"Is it raining outside?"
"Wh- oh. No, this is from the sprinklers."
"We have sprinklers? And you stood there long enough to be soaked?"
He shook his head and Kai laughed. He really looked like a wet dog. His hair shook droplets of water in every direction as he rotated his head.
"No we don't have sprinklers." With that he walked off and into his apartment. Kakashi was curious as to why she was laughing but decided it was better not to know.
Kai headed off into the streets of Konoha and was greeted by several familiar people that she passed everyday. She had been going to the academy for about a week and a half. Many of these people greeted her everyday and she returned with a wave or if she had time she would stop and have a little chat. Today however, she was in a hurry. She waved as they called out their greetings and stepped in front of a small booth that was closest to the academy. Here she was met with the sight of Mr. and Mrs. Ito. Each day they would give her a fruit of some kind to help her start her day. The academy gave out free meals but she liked to receive such a kind gift.
"Hi Mrs. Ito, what do you have for today?"
"Oh, hello Kai-chan, we just received this lovely batch of apples, you must have some." Mrs. Ito handed her three rosy apples and kindly sent her off to school. "You be good and do your best."
"I will, thanks for the apples." Knowing that she couldn't eat all three, she decided to give one to Iruka-sensei, as a gift for helping her. It was amazing, she could aim with the accuracy of a girl named Tenten (Iruka told her), and her chakra levels (explained by Iruka) were an abnormal high.
Not to mention her endurance. It seemed much more than it was back home. It was like she had gotten a huge boost. All thanks to Iruka teaching her how to use her strength.
Stepping in, she smiled and gave a small wave over to her classmates. Then she walked over to Iruka's desk and placed the apple down. Iruka looked up and gave a grin of thanks. He knew Mrs. Ito and her husband adored Kai because she resembled their daughter, and because Kai was such a sweet girl. Iruka thanked her and asked her if she had read her new books yet.
After the first three books, he realized something. She had photographic memory. Kai remembered every detail and had aced the surprise quiz he had prepared. She told him offhandedly of her skill. He was surprised. There were only so few that had that talent. Kakashi, Shikamaru, Sasuke, Neji and Sakura were the select few. Of course, two had their sharingans, one an extremely high IQ, the other from his byakugan and the last with a true one not enhanced by any kekkei genkei.
Kai spent class taking notes and listening to Iruka's voice. It was deep and throaty and very soothing. At the end of class she spent her time packing up her things and was called up by Iruka himself.
"Kai, I think you're ready to join a team." Kai was shocked. Already? Didn't most take a full year. "I know it seems early but you've read everything from the books and you need to be out on training grounds for more experience."
"But, I'll be leaving the academy."
"It's fine, your friends will always be around in Konoha and I will to." At this, both faces heated up. "Besides Naruto invites me to ramen every other day."
Kai nodded and bowed. She was told tomorrow to go to the Hokage tower and receive her instructions. As she was leaving, she heard Iruka call out her name.
"Um.. Kai-chan," again the tension increased. "Since we're not student teacher anymore, um.."
"Oh come on Iruka, spit it out." Both jumped.
Kakashi was sitting in the front row with his chin in the palm of his hand. "Icha Icha was much more exciting than this."
Iruka was about to murder him. But he finished his sentence. "Wouldyouliketogooutwithme?" He hadn't meant for it to come out like that.
"Huh?" Kai heard what Iruka-sensei had said but wasn't sure if she had heard him right. Did he just ask her out on a date?
"He. Wants. To. Go. Out. With. You." Kakashi and his monosyllables were getting annoying.
"Get out you baffoon."
"Last time I checked, I wasn't a primate."
"Well your right." Kai stated. Kakashi smiled triumphantly. "Your brain's not advanced enough."
At this his face fell. "Even monkeys know better than to interrupt on a private moment." Kai wondered if she was taking it to far. But she had had enough of his crappy attitude. Iruka had asked her out and she hadn't been able to reply. He was interrupting one of the happiest moments of her life in an alternate universe.
Kakashi gave a pout and said to Iruka, "I'll bring her to Ichiraku at seven with Naruto and Sakura."
At that moment, he reached over and grabbed Kai's arm and teleported them home. Iruka didn't have a moment's chance of protest.
"Let me go! Why are you being so obnoxious?"
He turned around and leaned in close. Kai froze. She had never been this close to a guy before. She could see his lone onyx eye and... the smirk he wore under his mask. She had never wondered why he wore it. She thought ninjas were supposed to wear one. You know, protect your identity. But nobody else had been prescribed one. Still mask or not, she could see his smug smile.
"Stop smiling like you're the king of the world."
Kakashi raised his eyebrows. She could tell he was smiling? Interesting, just as he could read her, she could read him. The mask was skin tight anyway. But nobody else had bothered to notice.
"Have you ever gone out on a date?"
His question sent her reeling back. What was with these questions? What business was it of his?
"No."
"Have you ever kissed a guy? Like a real kiss." At this moment, he leaned in closer. She felt trapped. This guy had no boundaries did he. And she was sorry that she had called him a monkey.
Just as his face was an inch away, he gave another grin. "Well then, I have something to talk to Iruka about tonight."
She realized with a start that he was playing with her. What a jerk. "You know, I hate your type." Kakashi was surprised. "Always playing around, never honestly talking to a girl. Why don't you get some manners and then talk to me?"
With that she stormed to her apartment room. Kakashi gave another smirk. She sure was fun to joke with. Interesting girl. At least interesting enough for him.
AT SIX...
"Hey Kai-chan," Kakashi stood in her kitchen.
"Holy shit," She almost fell backwards. One he had appeared out of nowhere. And two, he had called her chan.
"You know, I forgot we had training today. So should we ditch Iruka?" Kai rotated in her seat and shot him a glare. He was right, but who had agreed to the date? Who had set the date for tonight? Not her.
"You-" Then there came a knock. Kai strided across the room to the door and yanked it open. There stood Iruka and Naruto. Both dressed in ninja clothes. She in her pajamas. Iruka became beet red as Naruto said, "Nee-chan, Iruka-sensei says you got a date with him?"
Naruto gave a grin as Kai nodded and her color blended with Iruka's. These blushes were going to become permanent stains soon. "Well he agreed to have a training session with us instead and-"
Sakura promptly appeared behind him and whacked him. "They want to have a private date Naruto."
"No it's fine Sakura-chan." Iruka told her as Kai threw an angry look at Kakashi. This was all his fault.
Kakashi shrugged and came over. Iruka realized that Kakashi was in her apartment. Alone with Kai. Before they knocked, they were in an apartment. With each other.
Iruka couldn't ask why though. He'd sound nosy. But instead of walking to the elevator he walked over to the neighbouring room. And opened it. He lived next door to Kai?! When did this happen? Kakashi grabbed his Icha Icha and joined the three out in the hallway. "While we wait for Kai, let's head down to the lobby."
All nodded and followed him, Kai mentally cursed the man. Quickly she shut the door and changed in ten minutes. Immediately she ran to the elevators and reached the main floor. Kakashi and Iruka gaped. Kakashi did internally though. She was wearing her standard ninja clothes but had tied her hair up and didn't have her bandages on, which showed off her legs. Smooth was one way to describe them. Iruka quickly shut his mouth and said hey. Kakashi also regained his composure and went off in the direction of the training grounds.
"Kai-chan, you're not going to wrap your bandages?"
"No it takes too long, besides it's too hot out for them." Naruto nodded and started chatting with Sakura. Iruka slowed his pace down to match Kai and smiled discreetly. Kai smiled back and gave a small hi.
"This is your first official training right?" Kakashi's voice cut through the evening.
"Yeah."
"So we'll go easy on you." Kai snorted, he needn't be so cocky.
The first twenty minutes was spent on Iruka renewing their lesson of chakra manipulation and a review of her taijutsu. Kai hadn't told Iruka but she had read many books on jutsus with actual chakra. She had done it in secret on the school's playground in the evening when people were few but nonetheless, with her memory and large chakra amounts and her practice time of three hours a day, she still felt unsure.
She had never fought anyone. Not even one punch or slap. How was she to do it with all of the additional information?
"Kai, you're up against me." Kakashi knew he couldn't place her against Iruka or the two students of his. She was too close to them to actually inflict damage. "Attack with everything. I mean everything. Shurikens, kunai, taijutsu, genjutsu, even ninjutsu. Don't hesitate or you will lose."
Kai immediately felt ready to fight. She was going to give it her all. Sakura-chan was a medic, she said nothing bad would happen and that Kakashi was an elite ninja. He could handle it. So she started off with a fire jutsu.
"Whoa, Iruka-sensei, you teach her that? How come you didn't teach us?" Naruto and Sakura glanced over at their former teacher.
"I didn't." Iruka sounded just as puzzled as they did. Kakashi though was shocked for a moment, quickly jumped out of the way. He felt a presence behind him. Damn, she's fast.
Kai had almost managed to punch him but was blocked by his hand. Iruka, Naruto and Sakura stared in amazement at her speed and power. Kai felt her hesitations slip away. The fighting came naturally to her now. Punch, kunai, jutsu, hide, repeat, repeat, water, fire, lightning. Quite suddenly, Kakashi appeared behind her and held a kunai to her throat. He was faster than her. True he had held back but not as much as he had when he had first fought team seven. She was stronger than all three combined.
"We're finished for today."
Kai was breathing hard but calmed down. She felt great. The power and exhiliration of the fight still hadn't worn off.
Kakashi said to Iruka," You did a good job in teaching her."
Knowing Kakashi didn't hand out compliments often, or at all, he nodded gratefully but added. "I didn't teach her all those jutsus though."
Kakashi raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah, I spent a couple of hours a day learning these." Kai gave a shy smile.
Kakashi's eyes widened. She had huge amounts of chakra and dedication.
"With your memory, it didn't take long to memorize the whole book and try out a few hundred jutsus probably."
Kakashi was again surprised by this girl. "You have photographic memory?"
Kai nodded wordlessly. Hmm...today was just full of shockers. "Combined with your amounts of chakra and talent, you could be a chuunin. Or at least on a team."
"Hey how about she join our team?"
"Good idea Naruto. Can she Kakashi-sensei?"
Kakashi saw no harm in training her in a lesson from hell. "Iruka-sensei, have you tried the chakra test yet?"
"What? Oh that one? No. We could do it now." Iruka reached into his vest pocket and produced a thin sheet of paper.
"What's that?"
"It is a special chakra indicator that will tell us which type your chakra is. Here hold on to it. Now apply some chakra and we'll see."
Kai was given the small sheet and forced her chakra out. The sheet turned white and then shone a bright light. Then the paper tore in half, became wet, burned, and crumpled up then turned to dirt. Then it disappeared altogether. The four were gaping at the area where it had existed a moment ago.
"We need to see Tsunade. Now." Kakashi teleported them to the hokage tower.
