... And a chapter two! Thanks to VictoriaGrant for giving me the idea =)

Enjoy!

She looked around and wrinkled her nose.

America did not smell nice.

It smelled like the horses on the main square in Salzburg when there were too many people. Once, Mother had taken them there to see a parade and she had been squashed in between people with strange legs and pants and dresses.

When they got off the boat, Mother made them all hold hands so they would not lose each other. She was between Liesl and Kurt and Liesl was holding her hand so tight it hurt, but she didn't let go.

She didn't want to get lost in this smelly place.

There were lots of people with stamps and funny hats and they spoke a funny language, too. She heard it sometimes when her Father played music, but it sounded different as well.

Finally it was less noisy and they could see and talk to each other.

"We're going to have to walk a bit, children," Mother told them.

"Is this America?" Brigitta asked.

"It is, Brigitta," Father answered.

"Are we going to live here, Father?"

Father laughed. "Of course not, Kurt, this is the dock! Do you see any houses here?"

They all shook their heads.

"We're going to have to walk somewhere we can stay for a little while," Father explained. "Just until we find a house for ourselves."

Gretl nodded; she understood.

Would America be the same as home? Would there be pink lemonade and puppets and snow and would the black spider be here? She looked around but didn't see any of those.

They started walking with Father ahead. He looked like he had been here in America a million times before. Sometimes, they stopped and Father asked something to one of those men with funny hats in the strange language, and the man answered and they walked on.

She asked Louisa if the black spider would be here, and Louisa ruffled her hair and said no, of course the black spider was not here. That is why they had come here in the first place. There were no Nazis in America.

She didn't know what Nazis were, but smiled happily at the people around her, because it meant that Father would not have to leave.

And they could sing and dance and run again.
