Chapter 1

She knew the minute she opened the door she was in trouble. All eyes in the bar were on her. A chill ran down her spine, the hair on the back of her neck stood up. She could feel her heart beating out of control.

Just then a hand clamped down over her wrist and started dragging her deeper into the bar.

Frantically she fought for her life.

Screaming. Dragging her feet. Scratching at his fingers trying to loosen his hold.

But he held on, his grip like a vise, her finger tips already turning blue.

She was fighting him with everything she had, and he wasn't even breaking out in a sweat.

Christ.

He'd watched the scene unfold before him and he swore under his breath.

He knew the girl wouldn't survive the night - not that she'd want to when these thugs were done with her.

Mumbling, he swore again. What the hell was she doing in a place like this?

He's been embedded in a covert operation that was involved in taking down a large drug cartel.

Undercover cops had to think fast, talk smooth and have balls of steel. They were smart and arrogant and he was one of the best.

Scott's fingers played on his glass. He sat there, watching her kick and scream, his heart thumping and his mind in turmoil.

Dealing with the dregs of society had taught him that good did not always prevail over evil. He knew a lot of crimes went unpunished and he knew all to well that good people often paid with their lives.

He'd met plenty of people on the job. Especially women and children. He'd felt that pull deep down in his gut to do something. He's always managed to maintain his distance.

Not this time.

He rose to his feet, and made his way across the crowded bar.
