A/N: This was my first idea, but in the interests of being chronological it's not the last drabble but that end scene was just too cute! :)
Disclaimer: Still own nothing.
"I just didn't want to let anyone down."
He'd said the words and his eyes had met hers for a few moments, just long enough for him to let her know that it was her he hadn't wanted to let down.
The Gravedigger's murder had reminded him about everything that had happened with the case, all those years ago, when she and Hodgins had been buried alive.
He'd never felt so helpless, never felt so completely useless.
Now it felt like it was happening all over again, like somehow he was failing her.
He listened half-heartedly to the rest of the conversation around him and watched as the others left.
His eyes lingered on her as she stood, watching her father's cab drive away with a conch shell pressed to her ear and beautiful smile on her face, full of childish delight.
That was when he realised what had bothered him so much about the case: the Gravedigger had served to remind him how vulnerable she truly was; reminded him of that night in his car when he had broken her heart.
He didn't like to think about how vulnerable she was, especially in his physically weakened state.
He didn't like the thought that one day he could lose her.
