If I weren't drunk

"Maura, I... I've been holding this back for too long."

"Just tell me, Jane. Please, I want to know what's bothering you."

Jane took a deep breath. "You."

"What?"

"You're what's bothering me. Well, keeping me bothered."

Maura frowned. "Jane, I don't understand. What are you saying?"

"You've won me over, so don't think I'm not falling for you. I couldn't help it!" Jane sighed deeply. "It's all your fault."

"Jane-"

"Let me finish. You are my best friend, Maur. And I fell head over feet for you. You are just so perfect, and I feel like a fool for loving you! I mean, you're so far out of my league, it's hard to believe that we're even friends!"

Maura lowered her head, but said nothing.

"I'm sorry to spring this on you, Maur, but don't be surprised. I'm sure you've had this a lot, people declaring their love for you. But I'm not thinking rationally right now, but I do know that I love you, everything you are and every single thing about you!"

"Jane-"

"I'm sorry. I'll just leave now."

"Jane!" Maura held her breath, waiting for Jane to turn back.

"Yeah?" Jane's voice was weak.

"What took you so long?" Maura asked.

"I didn't wanna lose you."

Maura smiled softly. "You have me, if you want me."

"Really?"

"No, I'm kidding." Maura said sarcastically. "Darn it, Jane, you know I can't lie! You should have just asked!"

Jane closed her eyes. "OK, what exactly are you saying?"

"I'm not surprised that you love me, but clearly you are surprised that I love you. Jane, how could I not love you?"

Jane opened one eye to look at Maura. "You love me?" she asked breathlessly.

"More than that. Love is not a strong enough word, Jane."

"I'm sorry for taking so long. You're right, I should have asked. Thanks for your patience."

"That's not a good enough apology," Maura said, smiling.

Jane frowned mockingly. "Oh yeah? What can I do to make it up to you?"

"Well, if we were to start counting from the moment I realized that you love me, we have a few years' worth to catch up."

Jane stared. "Really? You've known all along?"

"I guessed."

"I thought you don't guess!"

Maura smiled. "Do you remember me telling you that I only take bets when I know I'm going to win?"

"That's still guessing!" Jane said. "Am I rubbing off on you?"

"Not the way I want you to, right now," Maura grinned.

"This is all your fault," Jane sighed.

"People are attracted to people who are attracted to them."

"Now that's just narcissism."

Maura laughed. "If you weren't drunk, I'd kiss you."

"I'm not drunk!" Jane replied indignantly.

"Then what gave you the courage to declare your love for me, in the middle of the night?"

Jane smiled slyly. "One beer, three tequila shots and seven shots of vodka."

"You drove here?"

"Come on, babe, I'm a cop!" Jane stated loudly. "Frankie drove."

Maura shook her head, still smiling. "Let's go to bed. You're going to sleep this off, and we'll talk some more in the morning."

"You always gonna treat me like this?" Jane asked.

"Like what?"

Jane shrugged. "You take care of me."

"Yes. I do. And I always will. But there's something I don't quite understand. Why did you say I'm bothering you?

"You keep me hot and bothered, Maura. If I weren't drunk, we'd be having sex tonight."

Maura smiled. "You've got that right. But if you weren't drunk, we wouldn't even be talking about this right now."

Jane laughed. "Does my drunken state bother you?"

"If by bother you mean turn on? No, I'd much rather you remember our first time," Maura took Jane's hand and let her to the bedroom. "But I'm not bothered by the fact that I'll be making love to you, as soon as the headache is gone."
