A/N a sequel to Kristen3's Playing with guns. Thanks to Kristen for writing this amazing story to begin with!
Daphne couldn't put the gun incident out of her mind. She tried to sleep that night, but found it evaded her. She'd had no idea her son could be that impulsive or susceptible to violence. He was young, but he knew what a gun was! And poor Martin- being put in the position of having to discipline David. She understood probably better than anyone what his reasons were. She decided to go to his house, after explaining to Niles where she was going.
"Daph? You okay? It's almost ten at night. Ronee and I were just settling in for the evening."
"I'm sorry to bother you but this couldn't wait. I wanted to talk to you about what had happened today."
Martin waved his hand, dismissively. "It's no big deal."
"It is a big deal. My son thought violence was cool, and he used his imagination to hurt one of the people I care about most in the world."
"Oh Daph don't get mushy."
"I can't help it. I love you like you were me own father. I couldn't think of anyone else I'd rather have as part of me son's life," Daphne continued.
If she didn't know better she would have sworn Martin's eyes were tearing up.
"You're okay, Daphne." Martin was a man of few words, so when she received a compliment she knew he meant it.
"I just came over to tell you that I love you, you old man, and thank you for hiring me. I know I wasn't Frasier's first choice, but I wouldn't have me husband, me son, and now this little one if it weren't for you."
"You mean..."
She smiled. "Yes. I'm pregnant."
"Does Niles know?"
"No. You're the only one. Besides me doctor of course."
"That's crazy," Martin said. "Why would you tell me of all people?"
"Because you're a wonderful grandfather and a father to your own boys. I've always found a connection with you, haven't you noticed that?"
"I guess."
Before Martin could protest Daphne walked over and hugged him. He reluctantly at first returned the embrace before pulling her to him as comfortably as he could.
"I love you too, Daph," he whispered so lowly that Daphne wondered if he'd really said it.
So she made her way home. Her and Martin's secret could keep a few more days. Of course, she couldn't wait to tell Niles about the pregnancy, but for right now, she could count on Martin, and it was kind of a nice feeling. She knew right then and there that coming to America was the best thing she could have ever done.
The end
