The doctor gave me some pain killers which actually did help, but he couldn't give me anything that would numb my fear of what was gonna happen next to me. Soda and Darry checked in on me to see if I wanted anything, but they couldn't get me to unto all this. The day dragged on, there's not much to do when you can't move from the waist down and you're stuck in a hospital. Whenever the pain killers wore off the pain came back even worse, sometimes I'd pass out from it. As it got later in the day all I wanted was to see Johnny. I needed to talk to him. But by the time I asked the doctor he said visting hours were over and he'd have to wait till tomorrow. So Soda tried talking to me to distract me.
"They're writing about you Johnny and Dallas in the papers." He informed me. I already knew this, but I didn't let him know.
"Really?"
"Yeah, they're saying you three are heros for saving those kids. I saw Dally and he was unhappy they didn't mention his police records." I acted impress. I knew he was leaving out the story about Johnny being charged for manslaughter. And how they were considering putting us in a boys home. If I even make it out of here. I thought.
I soon got tired and I fell asleep to him telling me a story about something funny Steve did at work. When I woke up the next morning the pain was back. I wish it would stop getting worse. I was starting to get a little hungry. But I knew hospital food tasted like garbage, right now all I wanted to eat was some of Darry's cooking. I was started to notice how much I missed it. I knew it would be one those things I'd miss when...well if it happened to me.
Later on during the day there was a knock on the door. It was my doctor. He said someone named Two-Bit was outside asking to see me. "Let him in, please." I said to him. I was hoping maybe Two-Bit could cheer me up. But when he walked in he didn't have his legendary smile on his face. He looked...a little sad. Never before had I've seen Two-Bit sad. Angry sure, sad, no.
He slowly walked over to me, like if he got close to me, I'd be in more pain than before. "How ya doin' Pones?" He finally greeted me.
"Better now that you're here." I said, hoping it would make him fell more comfortable. His face ligthened up a little bit, but he didn't smile.
"Good, good. I'm glad." There was a moment of slience. "How they treatin' ya?"
"Pretty good. They let Soda and Darry hang around, Darry's back home for a little bit though" I told him.
"Yeah I know,"
"How's the rest of the gang doing?" I asked.
"Alright I guess. Dally's getting out in a few days, Steve is thinking of visting ya. Says he's sorry for being a jerk to you. Johnny well...he's been better. He feels sorry for what happened to ya."
"I figured, but I'd rather it be me than him."
"You sure?"
"Yeah."
"Well I shouldn't be the one to tell ya this, but he's been really beating himself up about this whole thing."
That I didn't really want to hear. Did Johnny somehow think this whole thing his fault?
"Is he gonna come and vist?"
"Yeah soon, he couldn't right. His asshole parents wouldn't let him. You know how they are."
"Alright, I wanna talk to him."
