"Sunny autumn drive up highway seven. The leaves on the trees remind me of Heaven. Rusty palette of orange and yellow and red," Maya sings to herself, pedaling her bike further. She's going to see Cam today. It's Thursday. Mid June. There's a cool breeze and she can slightly feel the sun on her back.
She glances at her watch. It's 11:43 a.m., almost twenty minutes since she left her house. It shouldn't be much longer now. She'd made the same trek two other times before. Once at the beginning of the month and once in late May. During the first trip, Katie had come along. Her parents didn't want her to be so far away by herself. But with Katie away from home to get ready for the next school year, Maya's alone once again.
Maya looks down at her wrist again, finding that two minutes have gone past. She can see the gate from here, a large metal one with a fancy shape. As she nears it, she turns right and continues on the path. From here on, she must travel with great care to detail. The journey begins to get complex, sending her looping and twirling and turning in all different directions.
A few minutes later, she stops her bike, getting off of it and putting up the kickstand. She smooths down the bottom of her dress. It gives her a very earthy feel. It's color palette includes brown, green, and blue, the colors of nature. It also has a touch of a reddish-pink color and its design is of leaves and flowers. She'd bought it about two months prior. She loves spring and summer clothes and she spotted this beauty for a great price. Cam was with her when she got it. She tried it on and modeled it for him. He told her she looked beautiful, but then he added that she always did, no matter what she was wearing.
Smiling to herself, Maya steps onto the grass path, walking until she finds the right one. Campbell Evan Saunders. January 15, 1996-May 8, 2012.She reaches out to touch the stone, rubbing her finger across the top of it.
"Hey," she breathes. "I missed you. A lot's been going on recently. My audition went great, though you probably expected that. My brother's having another baby." She pauses for a moment. She really wants to open up. Share everything that she's going through. Not just the stuff that's visible to everyone, but also the things that she hasn't told anyone. Even the things she is not totally sure of herself.
So Maya continues, saying everything and anything. By the time she leaves the cemetery, she realizes that it's the longest she's ever stayed there. She turns the knob on the radio that she has attached to her bike, singing along with the music as she returns home.
Just a little idea I had. Thanks for reading!
I just put in a random birthday and middle name for Cam. I also know that he'd be buried back home, but let's just pretend he is from Toronto. It wouldn't work out if he were from Kapuskasing.
