Chapter 10: All She Could Do Was Cry

Laughing, Tails and Knuckles leisurely made their way to Amy's house, cracking the occasional joke about the two hedgehogs and their recent close relationship.

"No way," Knuckles choked out, "I'm not hearing this right now. You're trying to tell me that you think Sonic might have a crush on Amy?"

The two tailed fox forced a weak smile, suddenly realizing the context of the conversation. Sonic coming to like Amy had always been something the fox had foreseen, something he had even rooted for...but now?

It had already torn Sonic away from him before, leading to Sonic's decision to run in the rain, something he rarely ever did. And Tails being the cause of that made him feel even worse; what if he had ruined everything between Sonic and Amy? And if he hadn't...what if Sonic would decide to pick Amy over him, spending all his time with her?

"Tails?"

Knuckles stopped in his tracks, Tails not hearing him due to his thoughts. In turn, this caused Tails to walk into a tree, his frame nearly tripping backwards from the impact.

"Woah there!" Knuckles sped to catch the shaken fox, lifting him back onto his feet. Tails grabbed his head, feeling like it was rattling.

"Sorry Knuckles...I spaced out for a minute there." Tails shot an apologetic smile to Knuckles, clearly forced, but due to the echidna's thick headedness, it went unnoticed by the red brute. Instead of showing concern, Knuckles rolled his eyes and kept walking. "Just don't walk into any more trees!" He mused playfully.

And so, the duo walked in silence from this point on. Tails lost in his sea of worries, and Knuckles absorbing in his atmosphere. The rain had subsided, but the sun was covered by a thick sheet of pillowy gray clouds.

Suddenly, instead of the weather clearing up, raindrops began to mark the ground; it was almost like a warning sign to anyone who dared stay outside, seeming to want to deter the pair from their mission.

"Let's hurry up," Knuckles grunted, "I don't want to get caught in some storm. I've had enough water for one day." The echidna shivered, remembering the grotesque sewage systems he had been searching through not so long ago. Tails nodded in agreement, speeding up his stride.

And then they saw it.

Amy's home would have looked completely normal...if not for the gaping hole in the ceiling. Knuckles and Tails were running before they knew it.

"Amy!"

Knuckles banged his namesakes on the door, calling out her name before finally demolishing the door with his powerful fists.

"You know Knuckles, I don't think Amy will like that we-"

"I don't think she likes the hole in her roof either." Knuckles grumbled, ripping what was left of the door down. Tails rushed in ahead of him, in search of the hedgehogs.

What they found in the house was nothing like the usual interior would contain: pictures of friends had been ripped from their spots on the wall, glass broken and scattered about the floor and holes from the nails that had been previously holding up the picture frames left dozens of small holes in the sheet rock. It almost gave Amy's home the appearance that dozens of small bugs had made her home into their own.

Luckily, some parts of the house remained intact, but the parts that had been damaged had taken a severe beating. Not caring about the sharp glass, Knuckles began to dig through piles of rubble, desperately searching for hints of pink or blue.

It was Tails, however, that saw the blood.

By this point a small puddle of blood was noticeable from underneath a chunk of the roof; it had been hard to see due to the rain from earlier diluting the sharp crimson coloring as it penetrated the fluffy carpet within Amy's house, but with the currently clear weather, the sun had served to steal away the excess water, revealing Amy's still-breathing corpse.

The young fox panicked and called for Knuckles as he began prying at the roof to try and set his friend free, but it was no use. Luckily, Knuckles could lift the debris with ease.

"Oh my goodness...Amy!" Tails recoiled slightly at the sight of her banged up face. Luckily, she hadn't been injured to the point of near dying, but a large opening in her head risked bleeding out to the point of no return.

Tails immediately called up Shadow, begging for fast transportation to a hospital as Knuckles continued to dig around, unsuccessfully looking for any trace of blue that wasn't a shattered picture on the floor.

"Huh...ugh my head..."

"Amy!"

"She's coming to!"

"Whoopee!"

"Shut up, Charmy!"

Green eyes slowly revealed themselves as their owner gently lifted her eyelids. She had tried to lift her head, but found that a throbbing sensation like never before resonated in her forehead. Putting a hand to it, Amy gasped in horror as she recalled the events from earlier, and felt the stitches that kept her head in one piece.

"Miss Rose, don't try to move if it hurts too much," a doctor walked in the room after being informed by a nurse that Amy had woken up. "You retained quite a nasty head injury; we don't want to see you rip the stitches open. Thank goodness your friends found you and got you here as quickly as they did."

Friends...

Quickly...

Amy gazed around excitedly, thinking for just a moment that Sonic had gotten her here, but instead made eye contact with Shadow. He grunted and turned his striking eyes to the wall, slightly embarrassed, but seeming relieved.

Her eyes continued to scan the room, and found just about every single one of their friends but Sonic. A frown formed on Amy's face as she sunk back into her bed.

"Would you like us all to leave? I don't want anyone to be bothering you if you need to rest more," the doctor spoke up once more, seeming a bit put off by her unusual silence.

Amy simply shook her head. "I'd like my friends to all stay here," she whispered to confirm her gesture. "I'm alright. Just a headache." A wry smile made its way onto her bruised face.

The doctor merely smiled. "As I'd expect from a friend of Sonic..."

After the doctor had performed a couple of tests while her friends chattered to each other in whispers, he left them all to visit their friend. Amy could tell what the first question from her friends mouths would be already after all of the formalities.

So of course, they asked her one by one if she was feeling okay, and how she was holding up. It wasn't long though until Tails took a deep breath, and asked the inevitable.

"Amy, what happened? Where's Sonic?"

'Sonic...'

And then she cried.
