Shortly after breakfast, Dr. Kelford came by to check on Lee. Lee had had several doses of antibiotics and painkillers so the side of his face was shrinking into a more normal shape and he was feeling no pain. Much to Amanda's amusement, Lee's only preoccupations appeared to be making love and eating ice-cream. He hadn't touched his supper and instead given her puppy-dog eyes until she gave him permission to eat the cold treat. She'd put her foot down when he'd asked for ice-cream for breakfast though. They'd eventually compromised on a waffle with fruit and a single scoop of vanilla gelato.
Because he was feeling fine, Lee assumed that Dr. Kelford was there to see Amanda. "We're married and were going to have a baby. Is Amanda okay? She got shot you know." When Dr. Kelford raised a questioning eyebrow at Amanda, Lee scowled. "I didn't shoot her! I love her. She's my Amanda." Becoming suspicious, he swept Amanda up in his arm and carried her into a corner, standing guard in front of her.
"I know you didn't shoot her, Scarecrow." Dr. Kelford soothed. He seemed completely at ease with his patient's irrational rambling. "Can I have a look at your mouth, please?"
"You have to check Amanda first." Lee insisted, once again lifting Amanda off her feet. She was starting to feel a little bit like a toddler's stuffed toy. Carrying her over to Dr. Kelford, he set her carefully on her feet. "Don't worry, Amanda. It won't hurt." Rolling her eyes, Amanda decided that distraction was in order. "Lee, why don't you get us a book to read later?"
"Sky Chief Rides Again?" Amanda looked at the bookshelves where a few recent best-sellers had been placed. Clearly, the usual grade of resident needed something rather more complex to keep them distracted.
"Maybe, go see what you can find, okay?" Lee happily wandered off, as always happy to do anything Amanda asked him for.
"How are you holding up?" Dr. Kelford asked quietly.
"I'm fine. He won't let me anywhere near the window, but otherwise he's being very sweet." Amanda answered, watching her husband search the bookshelf for a few moments. Inevitably, his attention wandered and he started doing push-ups.
"We can sedate him, you know. It would give you a break."
"No, he naps often and I try to sleep when he does." Amanda answered. She smiled as Lee bounced up to his feet.
"I love you." He told her, before informing Dr. Kelford that they were married and they wanted a baby. Amanda decided to show Dr. Kelford what she meant and casually started drifting towards the window. Before she could get within ten feet, Lee swooped in and picked her up, scolding as he carried her back across the room. "Stop it, John Wayne! You'll fall. I don't want you to fall, I don't like it when you go SPLAT!"
"Perfectly understandable." Dr. Kelford agreed, his lips twitching.
"Sorry doc, but I want to make love to my wife. We're making a baby, you know? Maybe we could visit another day? She's okay now. I won't let her near the window and I didn't order a sandwich." Behind him, Amanda shrugged at the doctor. Most of the time, Amanda could make some sense out of what Lee was saying, but then he could devolve into complete gibberish. The panic that having her near windows triggered only made sense in his curdled brain. Dr. Kelford nodded at Lee and, as Amanda was being carried to bed in front of him, quickly decamped.
Amanda shook her head and kissed her husband. For all that Lee was incoherent, the core of the man was still obvious to her. He was affectionate and protective of her, even if his brain was playing tricks on him every other minute. He couldn't hold on to any thought for long, but he still always offered some of his ice-cream to her and tried his best to carry conversations. Dropping her on the bed, he giggled. "Do you remember when I used the trampoline when I was saving the boys from Prescott?" Lee asked her.
"Yes. You were great, sweetheart."
"That was me. Not Joe." Lee told her with a scowl. "But you went out for pizza with him." Knowing that Lee could go off on a major rant whenever he thought of Joe, Amanda sought a distraction.
"Lee, do you remember Wilma?" Lee preened at that reminder.
"She said I was a hunk." He reminded Amanda. "You know, I haven't had to bail you out of jail for years!" Amanda wished he wouldn't make it sound like she was an ex-con. Both times she'd been arrested had, after all, been sort of the Agency's fault. Striding towards the phone, Lee picked up the headset and started dialling.
"Uh Lee –"
"Harry! It's Lee! I got married." Amanda groaned. So much for not letting anyone else in on Lee's confusion. "She's wonderful. Wonderfully wonderful in every way! Amanda! Not Mary Poppins. You can't marry Mary Poppins. She isn't real. Amanda's real. She's wonderful. And we're going to make a baby, Harry."
"Let me talk to him." Amanda asked, holding out her hand for the phone. Happy to oblige, Lee handed it to her. "Tell him I said you're wonderful."
"Hi, Harry?" Amanda greeted.
"Hi Amanda. Billy warned me Lee might call. Sounds like he's in quite a state."
"Yes. Sorry about that."
"Amanda, get off the phone! I don't want Joe to call you here!" Lee complained, cutting off the call.
"Lee, that was very rude." Amanda scolded.
"I don't like it when you talk to Joe." Launching himself at her, Amanda laughed as she found herself once again on her back being kissed to an inch of her life by her befuddled husband.
Four days later, Amanda watched Lee sleep. The entire experience had been utterly surreal. Even without his usual laser focus, Lee had been a charming and loving companion. He was finally starting to show signs of recovery and had even allowed her near the window. He no longer stood outside the bathroom talking to her to be sure she was alright. He'd even consented to eat something other than ice-cream at lunch. Best of all, the manic energy was slowly being brought under control and he was keeping more normal hours.
Amanda wondered what the next few days would bring. She hoped that he wouldn't remember anything of the last week. In case he did though, she'd been careful to be as honest and vulnerable to him as he had no choice but to be with her. She remembered when he'd told her that he'd decided on no secrets between them. They'd battled over a coin toss and in the end, she'd cheated and he'd let her because that was what Lee did.
Whether he remembered or not, there'd be one subject that she would need to broach quickly. Without the opportunity to collect her diaphragm before coming to Mrs. McMurtrey's, Amanda had been faced with a choice: either ask the Agency to supply condoms or take Lee's baby-making ambitions as real. As he hadn't deviated from the truth as he knew it, she had to believe that he did want a baby too. If it happened after this, so be it. They'd handle it.
