On Sunday morning, Lee woke up and kissed Amanda's neck. That didn't feel quite right and so he reached up to touch his usually clean-shaven face. The bushy beard was his first clue that something wasn't right. He felt like Rip Van Winkle! Opening his eyes, he immediately recognised the space they were in. It was the same suite that they'd had when they were here with the PD-2 scare, but this time it looked like a tornado had hit it.
Curled against him, Amanda was sleeping peacefully as if there was nothing to worry about. Stroking her hip to wake her up, Lee smiled as she stretched and rolled over. "Good morning, sweetheart." She greeted, her expression the same one he'd seen her use with Rupert and the other Briarwood residents.
"Amanda, why are we at Mrs. McMurtrey's?" The room was a shambles, with bookcases pulled in front of the windows and bowls of what looked like melted ice-cream piled on every surface. Searching his face, she was clearly looking for some sign.
"Lee, are you…" Amanda paused. There was really no point in asking him if he was coherent again. "Lee, do you remember your sore tooth?" She asked softly.
"Yeah."
"Do you remember anything after that?" She prompted gently. Flopping back onto his back, Lee considered the question carefully. He'd woken up with Fronan and the tech but Amanda had been gone. As if he was watching a horror film play out, Lee remembered every detail of his performance in the bullpen. He could see himself babbling about Amanda's wonderful wonderfulness and how they were going to make a baby right away. Apparently, Billy, Francine, the Agency chauffeur, and anyone else he'd seen in the past week had been subjected to the same love-sick prattle. "Amanda, do you have my gun?" He finally asked.
"Yes, why?"
"I'd like you to shoot me." Lee told her firmly.
"You remember?" Amanda asked, her face the picture of sympathy. The more he thought about it, the more Lee remembered. His eyes opened and he met his wife's gaze. "Amanda, I'm so, so sorry."
"What for?" Lee cringed. She was going to make him rehash it all.
"For telling everyone, for –"
"No, no, Lee." She interrupted, pressing a finger to his lips. "Not what are you sorry for – why are you sorry? It wasn't your fault and everyone knows that."
"Everyone?" He groaned.
"It wasn't really possible to keep anything a secret until we got you here." She explained. Kissing him, she stood up. He was clearly back to normal but she knew that Dr. Kelford wouldn't discharge them until tomorrow. That gave her a day to talk with Lee and help him process everything. She wished he'd forgotten but instead, he seemed to be remembering with crystal clarity. Sitting up in bed, he moaned. "What's wrong?" Amanda demanded, hurrying back to his side. Amanda had seen him blush before, but now he was cherry red. Looking down at his lap, he reached under the sheet and adjusted himself, wincing. "Sore?" He nodded. Amanda ruthlessly bit down on her lip. She really shouldn't laugh, if only because she'd been in the same tender state on Wednesday, but the fact that Lee was apparently suffering from very delicate muscle strain was unbelievably funny. If the same thing had happened when he wasn't drugged, he'd see the humour too. When he looked up and saw her amusement, his lips twitched. "Aww… Amanda. I didn't hurt you, did I?"
"No, Lee. Listen to me. You're going to get teased about all of this. But with me, there's nothing you need to be embarrassed about. You've been very sweet, just a little bit confused." Lee looked at her carefully. He hadn't kept count but he knew they'd spent a lot of time in the past week making love.
"We… uh… Amanda, we haven't been using any protection." Lee groaned. They'd never before discussed having a baby together. Until all of this happened, he hadn't realised how desperately he wanted a child with his beautiful wife. Now he knew that there'd be nothing better, but not if that child was conceived when he was drugged and Amanda had no choice.
"I know." Amanda said softly. "Sweetheart, I hope I made the right choice for us. But… I thought that a baby was really what you wanted and I couldn't bring myself to ask to have someone swing by the apartment and collect my diaphragm, or worse put in a requisition for condoms!" Amanda explained.
"But we haven't even talked about it." Lee reminded her. He couldn't believe how big a mess had come simply because he had been his usual pig-headed self about getting dental care. "I do want a baby. A little girl with her mommy's eyes…" Lee felt his heart lurch at the mental image. There must be some residual effect of the drug because what he was feeling was like nothing he could remember.
"Sweetheart, I love you." Amanda told him. "And the thought of making little spy babies with you is something I've been thinking about for a long time. If that's what you want, and I know it's what I want, then maybe something good will come of this past week."
"I sure hope it does. Though the mind boggles at how much teasing I'll go through if you have gotten pregnant this past week." Lee grumbled. Amanda leaned forward and kissed him.
"I love you, and I'm so happy to have my Lee back. Except that Dr. Kelford warned me that even if you seem coherent, he wasn't going to release you until we were sure the drug had fully worn off – so we're stuck here for another day."
"I'm stuck here." Lee corrected. "You should go home, Amanda." When he saw her eyes narrow, he quickly tried to explain. "Amanda, you've been here for a week! Your mom and the boys will be worried about you –"
"Oh look," Amanda began, pausing to collect her thoughts. "I know that you were in a lot of pain last time I said this, but I want you to listen to me, Lee." When he made a show of subsiding, she continued. "We're family. Now, mother and the boys may not know that we're married yet – but they care about you. I told them that you'd been taken ill while doing a job in Norfolk and they were all prepared to rush out here and look after you. I know that you haven't had much experience with family but you need to give us a chance to take care of you too." Lee smiled. His Amanda in fully ramble was one of the things he loved about her. Of course, he wouldn't admit it under torture.
"I guess I messed up, huh?"
"Yeah, you did. And you're just going to need to do better. Next time something like this comes up, I want you to think about how you'd feel if I was in the state you were in on Monday and I didn't tell you. You're my husband, Lee. I had the right to know." Lee leaned forward and kissed her.
"I am sorry, Amanda. I won't do that again."
"You better not." She told him in an uncharacteristically sulky tone. He loved when she got grumpy because he wasn't taking good enough care of himself.
"But Amanda, that's not what I meant. I'm fine now. If I have to stay, then so be it. But you haven't spent any time with the boys and really, it's okay if you go home."
"Thank you." Amanda said without making a move to leave. Rolling his eyes, Lee pulled her into a hug.
"You know…" Lee began, kissing the top of her head. "You really are stubborn."
"Determined." Amanda corrected. " Now, do you want to tell me why you kept calling me John Wayne?"
