"Why are we stopping?" she said, waking with a small jolt.
"We need gas, and I need to go to the bathroom," Leonard said sadly.
"Penny, I have no excuse, but I just want to tell you that you mean everything to me," Leonard began again. "If I could go back and change things, I would. All I can do is promise that I will always love you, and always try to do the right thing."
"Hey," Penny snarled, "now is not the time for expressions of undying love. Two years ago, maybe. But now, I need some fresh air." And she stomped out of the car.
"Wait," Leonard say, jumping out after her. "Can't we just talk?"
As he walked around the car to Penny's side and she rushed across the roadway, he spotted a tractor-trailer pulling away from the diesel pumps and picking up speed. Quickly, Leonard realized that the truck was too close, and that Penny hadn't seen it. He rushed into the roadway and pushed his fiancée onto the grass next to it, meaning to jump after her. But it was too late.
There was squeal of brakes and a sickening crunch.
"What the hell?" Penny cried as she hit the grass, not appreciating being tackled. But as she turned around, she realized what had happened. The truck was in front of her, and Leonard was nowhere to be seen.
"Leonard?" she cried tentatively. She got up and looked to the front of the truck.
"Leonard!" Penny screamed. "Oh, my God!"
