She knew it. She had known it for months, but now she had her proof. Ron had always been secretive but in the last week it had become obvious that he was cheating on her.
He had been suspiciously late several times and had spent ages on the private floo, never letting her know who it was he was talking to. Now she could catch him in the act.
Hermione stepped into the kitchen, looking around for any sign of her - the mysterious woman who had stolen her fiance away from her. She was supposed to be on a plane, meeting with her new boss to discuss her promotion, but the flight had been cancelled. He was supposed to be working today and yet his shoes and cloak carelessly dropped by the door meant that he was here.
Without further ado she flung open the door to her bedroom.
"Ron! Ron! I know you're in here! I know you brought her home!" Her hand slipped to her wand as she looked around for him.
"Hermione?" He stood up and she saw him - very much alone. Finally allowing her eyes to shift and take inthe whole picture she noticed the balloons and streamers and hand painted banners scattered around the room. It took her only a second to realise exactly how mistaken she was.
"Surprise"
His voice was flat and toneless and when she looked back at him his face was expressionless.
"Ron I-"
"Don't bother" He cut her off abruptly and turned away.
"Where are you going?" She asked, a hint of desperation in her voice.
He looked back at her grimly. "I'm leaving. I can't do this any more. You're always suspicious, you can't bring yourself to ever trust me. I wanted to plan a surprise for you, to celebrate your promotion, but now it's ruined."
She watched him go, a feeling of helplessness and self pity and disgust swallowing her up.
