Chapter two:
Mello can't help himself and he quietly opens the door peeking inside. He notices that Near is laying on his own bed asleep. He is about to leave figuring that it was just some weird stupid feeling. He finds himself rooted to the spot when he notices Near start to shift around in his sleep. He can hear tiny whimpers as a nightmare takes hold of the other.
That is when a beam of moonlight comes through the window, Near always seemed to leave his curtains open refusing to close them as Mello noticed anytime he looked to the window, landing upon Near. It is the brightest moonlight beam the blonde has ever seen.
Near starts to settle and falls back into a peaceful slumber as the moonlight shines upon him.
Mello's mind is reeling trying to understand what it is that he has just laid witness to. His mind can't even stop running away on itself long enough to even be able to get a single actual thought to come. He jumps being broken from his trance at the sound of someone coming towards the direction of the rooms. He looks in that direction for a brief moment before turning to look back into Near's room.
The moonbeam is gone and Near is just laying there asleep.
Mello wonders if he had been seeing things. Maybe he listened too much to Hueso's story and belief that it is real. He quietly and quickly closes the door before he bolts away to his room closing the door behind himself. He lets out a breath knowing he made it in time to not be seen by whoever was coming to check on them tonight. He paces in his room with a hand to his chin as he goes over what happened over and over again in his head. He was sure that he had seen that happen however he doesn't think it is logical at all.
There is no way the moon could cast a light like that. It must have been just a regular moonbeam shining through Near's window and it must have been a trick of the eye.
Mello shakes his head when Hueso's words earlier come back into his head. He has been letting the other's story get into his head way too much. He gets himself ready for bed ignoring whoever is checking that he is in his room before leaving him alone. He turns off his room lights, that he hardly remembers turning on when he got into his room, before crawling into bed. He looks to the window that he is leaving open tonight to gaze out at the moon in the sky. He snorts as there is no logical way that the stupid fairytale is true and no way would Near be a teen even if he was the moon child. He rolls over to make his back face his window pulling his blanket up to his shoulder as he tries to just make himself go to sleep. He doesn't even think about the chocolate bar he left on his nightstand. He swears that he sees a shine of light before he ends up falling into a deep slumber. He blinks open his eyes finding himself standing on a pathway of stars and wherever he glances around he sees stars around him. He could swear that the path of stars is surrounded by the night sky… With the only thing that is missing looking to be the moon. He looks to where the path of stars go and he decides to just follow it. He walks along it and despite the stars making it not look too solid it does feel very solid on his feet as if he's walking on a floor.
The path of the stars start to seem to go nowhere until a sound comes to the right.
Mello stops walking and turns to look in that direction. He swears to see some movement in the darkness between the stars way out of his reach. He almost swears that he seems some stars move before fading to nothing. He looks around wondering if he isn't alone in this place that he has found himself suddenly in. He doesn't even remember how he had gotten here. He takes a few more steps forward along the path while still watching around himself for anything. He pauses to turn around searching behind himself. He doesn't see anything but the starry sky and the endless stretch of a path of stars. Suddenly his body tenses upon getting the sense of a very powerful figure being right behind him. He spins around to try to see who is there… Only for him to jolt up in his bed in the orphanage with a gasp. He glances around not seeing anyone in his room as he can clearly see with the daylight shining in. He closes his eyes letting out a breath. "It was just a weird dream." He gets up and gets ready for the day making sure to grab the chocolate from his nightstand before he leaves his room. He makes his way towards the cafeteria for some breakfast while munching on the chocolate. He is about to pass by Near who stops walking to let him go by. He pauses in his steps and turns to look at Near letting their eyes meet for a moment.
Near's grey eyes meet with Mello's calmly and the blonde could almost swear that while looking at them those eyes look like full moons.
Mello turns away mentally shaking that idea away. He is letting his imagination get to him. He continues off with that deciding to bury himself into studying later to try to help bring his mind back to reality. He is sitting in class soon enough and staring at the board though the teacher is going over something that Mello already knows. He is wiggling his pencil in his hand as he had been ready to take notes however now he is finding that is nothing new for him to take notes on. He finds his eyes drifting over to Near who is just sitting there twirling a strand of his hair around his finger. He does notice that the other doesn't even have any notebooks as usual. He knows that there can't be any way that Near is the supposed moon child, however he does find that he is now really curious about where Near had even come from. He turns back to the board deciding that he was going to ask Matt to look at the files the orphanage has on Near. He knows that the red head has already hacked that system a long time ago.
