Contrary to popular belief, Sidney usually wasn't the first to wake up in the morning; her husband was. It was weird because while Billy was not a morning person by any means, he was always the first out of the two of them to get up. Sidney would often wake up to him making breakfast in the kitchen, a pot of fresh coffee brewing in the coffee machine on the counter beside him.
Today, though, Sidney woke up first.
Turning over, the brunette saw that it was 6:00 am on her alarm clock and she stifled a groan. It was too early, but she couldn't sleep and she knew exactly why:
The baby in her belly decided that he was going to be just like his father was in high school and play football, only instead of on a field it decided to begin its game on her bladder.
"You're killing me, little guy," she muttered to her rounded stomach as she carefully rose from the mattress. She knew damn well that she couldn't go back to sleep now because it wouldn't be the last time she'd have to go to the bathroom, given where her unborn son was currently positioned. She learned quickly that whenever her days started like this, it was best not to return to bed.
Making her way out of their bedroom and down the hall into their bathroom, Sidney did her business and made her way downstairs to the kitchen, grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge rather than a cup for coffee. Ever since she got pregnant, she was told to cut out caffeine. Of course, she never drank much coffee anyway, but she could have used some right now.
The good thing about this, Sidney mused as she sat at the table and sipped her water while staring out at the darkened window, is that she got to watch the sunrise.
She loved sunrises. Ever since she was a child, she always stayed up to watch the sunrise whenever she woke up too early and couldn't fall back asleep. A lot of times she'd watch them by herself, but occasionally she'd be joined by her parents, Tatum whenever one of them slept over at the other's house and they were up together, and, just recently since they started dating, Billy.
She loved sunrises because of all of the colors. The yellows, oranges, and reds were gorgeous as they illuminated the blue sky and white clouds that signaled the beginning of the day. She loved the feelings of peace and joy that the sunrises and their colors gave her; they never failed to put a smile on her face and she felt grateful every day she got to see one.
Sidney checked the clock on the stove. 6:15. Another fifteen minutes to go until she got to see the sunrise. Her stomach flipped in excitement and she took another few drinks of water to settle herself all while gently rubbing her stomach. She didn't want her excitement to trigger her baby's. He wouldn't calm down quite as easily and she may end up missing the sunrise if he began his own backflips and cartwheels against her insides.
Her efforts were successful, and the early morning continued to pass with serene silence as she sat at the table, watching as the sky slowly began to lighten. Soon enough her sunrise would come.
She checked the time again. 6:25. Five more minutes until the time in which the sun usually rose in California, and she could see it beginning to peak over the horizon, its warm colors enveloping the landscape.
Arms suddenly wound around her waist, one large hand gently massaging her belly, and she smiled.
"Good morning, husband," Sidney greeted, kissing Billy's arm.
"Good morning, wife," Billy replied, nuzzling into her neck. "Why are you up so early?"
"Your son was playing football against my bladder."
"Oh? He's my son now, is he?" Billy was amused as he brought a chair over and straddled it so he could stay in his current position.
"Yeah. When he's being rebellious inside of me, he's just yours. When he's being a good boy, he's mine. And any other time, he's ours," she said rather cheekily, her smile stretching her mouth when he laughed into her ear.
"Whatever you say, Princess," he said. "So he was playing football against your bladder?"
"Yes, and I couldn't get back to sleep after I went to the bathroom, so I decided that I'd watch the sunrise."
"You always did love your sunrises," he muttered fondly into her skin.
"Always have, always will," she agreed.
The clock read 6:30 then, and Sidney let out a happy noise as the sun fully rose into the sky and the world was bathed in the warm orange, red, and yellow hues of daytime. She sighed in contentment and leaned against Billy's chest, gazing at the kind of beauty that only nature could provide.
"I love this," she sighed. "Being up with you, watching this sunrise together, all while I've got our baby growing inside of me."
Billy kissed the top of her head and traced patterns on her large stomach through her nightgown. "I love this, too," he whispered. "It's rare that we're both up early and whenever we are, I enjoy every minute of it."
They stayed like that until the sun was fully up. It always made Sidney sad whenever a sunrise was completed; it just didn't seem fair to her that it only took a few minutes to enjoy what she wished could take hours.
Her melancholic trance was interrupted, however, by her stomach growling. A blush covered her cheeks while Billy chuckled.
"Hungry?" He teased.
Sidney slapped the arm that was still wrapped around her only for him to laugh louder. "Yes," she answered grudgingly.
Billy kissed her temple this time. "Let me make my coffee first and then I'll cook us breakfast. What do you want?"
Sidney didn't even have to think. "Chocolate chip pancakes," she said immediately. "With extra chocolate chips and crumbled bacon. Oh, and whipped cream! Lots of whipped cream and maple syrup!"
"You and your pregnancy cravings," he said, shaking his head fondly. He then removed himself from her and stood up to first make his coffee and then their breakfast.
"I love you," Sidney said, turning in her seat to shoot him a huge grin.
"I love you, too," he winked at her as he went about preparing the coffee machine.
"Make sure you make some hash browns and those flaky biscuits I like! Baby and I are craving all of them, too!"
"Yeah, yeah. I know the drill."
Sidney turned back in her seat, the wide grin still on her face as she gazed out at the fully lit up landscape.
Sunrises, Billy's arms around her, her unborn baby sleeping soundly in her belly, and a breakfast that included everything she was craving were a combination that made for a great beginning to her day.
