When Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan returned, they were singed, dirty, and sweaty. Once they reached Master Yoda and a senator that managed to escape, they rushed Padme to the medical ward.
They stood outside the room, watching the droids look her over and run some tests.
One droid came out to them.
"She's healthy, but for some reason, we're losing her."
"She's dying?" Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan said together.
The droid lowered its arms.
"She's lost the will to live. We must act quickly if we're to save the babies."
"Babies?" said the senator.
The droid nodded.
"She's carrying twins. We'll help her get into labor and hope she has enough strength to deliver them."
Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan stayed by her side as the next few hours passed, comforting and encouraging her.
Finally, the first baby was born, a boy.
The droid put the baby, who was laying in a small, brown blanket, in Obi-Wan's arms, and Padme named him Luke.
The second baby was a girl. The droid placed her, also in a small, brown blanket, in Qui-Gon's arms, and Padme named her Leia.
"Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan," she said weakly.
"Yes?"
"There's good in him. I know there is."
Padme said no more, for she had passed on.
As the baby girl in his arms and the boy in Obi-Wan's arms began to squirm and fuss, both obviously Force-sensitive, Qui-Gon now understood why he had been sent back.
He was help watch over these children, and he vowed to do so with his very life.
