Steve said, "Who would have known Aly could be such a girl?"
I flipped him off and grinned. Even Darry laughed at that. "That's my girl," Two-Bit said while looking happier then I've seen him in a long time. Maybe it wouldn't be bad being Two-Bit's girl, heck even Darry seemed to like the idea.
I woke up the next morning groggy. Maybe Darry was right, we should lay off on the school night movies. I banged on the door of the bathroom and yelled, "Hurry up, Soda!"
I went in the kitchen instead of waiting on him by the door to see Ponyboy and grinned. "Hey, little bro."
Ponyboy gave a smile and said, "Hey, Aly. Soda made breakfast."
I stopped in my tracts. "What did he make this time?" I asked.
"Green eggs and ham. Some kid was talking about the story at the DX yesterday and gave him the idea."
I smacked my forehead. "I wish these kids would quit giving Soda these crazy ideas for breakfast, or any meal really." I looked down at Pony's food. "Was it edible?"
"Yeah, pretty good for Soda." I shrugged and grabbed me a plate full. I ate it and tried to imagine it not so green. We ate in silence while Darry and Soda was running around the house getting ready. "So when did you and Two-Bit start goin' together?"
I had forgotten about last nights events until then. I just shrugged and said, "Not long. I didn't want to make Darry even madder at me. He seemed to like the idea though."
"Yeah, Darry asked me a few times if you two were goin' together when you guys would go out. I guess he just thought you weren't telling us and got used to the idea."
I don't know if Ponyboy said anything else. I started remembering last night.
We were on the front porch, walking towards his truck. "Hey, Aly, you better be wearin' my jacket tomorrow," Two-Bit said.
I grinned and said, "Why's that?"
"Because don't need any Socs thinking your single again."
"I can take care of myself," I replied.
He gave me a grin and said, "Oh, you handled yourself like a pro at the movies." I laughed and nudged him. He grabbed something out of his truck, then pulled me closer by the belt loops of my jeans when he got in reaching distance. I felt him put a switchblade in my back pocket. "In case I'm not there."
I nodded and said, "Alright, but you're gonna be there."
"Yeah, but you never know. You have a record of runnin' off. Plus, I figured you'd use my extra switch before Johnny Cakes or Pony would."
"I will," I said. I felt the silence stretch between us. "So is this your way of asking me to be your girl?"
Two-Bit shrugged and said, "Why not."
"You always were original," I commented laughing. He kissed my scar above my right eye then kissed my lips. I had been kissed before. It wasn't anything like this though. He held my hips to keep me close to him while I wrapped my arms around his neck. I heard the guys hollerin' and whistlin' at us. I pulled away and gave Two-Bit a smile. "I better go inside before Darry decides he doesn't like this," I said.
"Yeah, you better. I'll see you tomorrow, Aly," he said. "No kissin' on Johnny Cakes now, you hear?"
I laughed and shoved him towards his truck playfully. "Get in, Two-Bit," I said.
I snapped out of my daze when Soda started askin' where his work shirt was like he always did. He loses everything. I got in the shower and got ready for school. I think I was too excited because I was still ready earlier then I normally was. I looked in the mirror and could see why everyone seemed to smile at me last night. I looked happier. I had on another t-shirt and jeans. (Yeah, that's about all I wear growing up with three brothers.) This one was blue and I wore Soda's old button up shirt. I looked like a slob of a girl, but I didn't mind. The only girls I was ever around was at school, unless Angela Shepard decided to start hanging around. I think she had a thing for Ponyboy.
I pulled Two-Bit's old leather jacket on over my blue t-shirt. (I gave him his newest leather jacket back since it was the only one he had.) I had tied my shoes up about the time we heard the truck horn honk. I yelled, "Bye, Darry, Soda!" Darry yelled for us to behave for once, but we always do majority of the time.
I got in the back seat out with Johnny of habit, and Two-Bit gave me a funny look. "Hey, Two-Bit," I said.
"Hey, Babe," he replied and gave me a grin.
Ponyboy asked, "Why did you sit back there for, Al?"
"Out of habit I guess," I told him.
We pulled up to the school. I crawled out of the back seat and felt Two-Bit kiss me before I even realized what was goin' on. I felt him pull away. "C'mon, we got class," I said still in a half daze. Johnny was waiting on us. I still wasn't used to the idea of being Two-Bit's.
"Johnny, better make sure no one messes with Al today," he said in mock seriousness.
Johnnny grinned and said, "Don't worry, Two-Bit, I got her."
I rolled my eyes at the two of them. I made my way inside the building and heard whispering. I looked down and back at Johnny. Two-Bit had went to his class. "Do I look any different?"
"No, why?"
"Everyone's lookin' at me funny."
Johnny shrugged.
-School was boring as usual. I didn't understand why Two-Bit liked it so much. He only skipped when me and Pony wanted to or if somethin' was goin' on. I walked towards Two-Bit's truck when I heard a scream that got cut off. I looked around and saw a girl being slammed up against a wall by someone. She looked real roughed up. I saw Two-Bit watching me. I ran and tackled the Soc. "Get off her!" I yelled. Yeah, tackling a Soc wasn't my greatest ideas, but I figured that was the only way I could catch him off guard.
The girl dropped to the ground and crawled away hurriedly. The guy under me said, "Get off me you slut!"
"You shouldn't have been hittin' on a girl!"
"You don't know what you're talking about."
Two-Bit came up and said, "Aly, c'mon, get off of him take the broad to my truck." He had his famous switchblade out and looking at the guy. I stumbled off him when the Soc shoved me. "Watch it, Soc!" Two-Bit yelled. He was mad when anyone touched me besides the gang. He always was like that.
I helped the girl up off the ground. We walked to Two-Bit's truck. I looked at her and asked, "Are you alright?"
She nodded hesitantly. She kept jumping at every noise. Ponyboy and Johnny got in the back of the truck. I sat in between the passenger seat and driver's seat. "It'll be ok. He won't hurt you any more, I promise. I'm Alice Curtis by the way, but the gang calls me Al or Aly," I said sticking out my hand with a smile.
She looked at my hand for a long while before slowly shaking it. "I'm Delilah Evens," she said quietly. She cringed a little when she said her name.
"Mind if I call you Dee because you really seem to hate it?"
"I don't mind, and I do hate it."
I could see me getting along with this girl. First time in the history of Alice Curtis did I ever think this day would come.
Two-Bit got in the truck and looked at me and said, "Hey, Superman Jr."
I shrugged. "You mad?" I asked.
"No, I needed an excuse for a fight anyway." He laughed.
I nudged him and said, "Don't your gonna scare away my new buddy." I looked over at her and said, "Dee, this is my boyfriend, Two-Bit Matthews. Don't mind him, he jus' likes to joke around alot. If he offends you, tell me. Two-Bit, this is Delilah, but she goes by Dee."
Dee let out a half laugh. She would fit in. I had a feelin'. I just hope that Soc wouldn't come after her again. I can't stand the thought of someone hittin' on a girl. Dad always was calm unless he heard someone had hit a girl then he would be livid. I even got scared of him sometimes, but I can't wait for Darry and Soda to meet her. I hoped Dally didn't scare her off. He always seems to scare the good ones off.
