Chapter 4: The Blizzard
"This can't be happening."
"Apparently it is," Noah said dryly. The two stood in silence outside their snow covered car. Even more snow floated to the ground; some of it fell through the ghost, making him rather uncomfortable indeed.
"How could this much snow fall in just-" Cody checked his watch. "...We were here for an hour?!" he yelped in disbelief.
Noah shrugged indifferently. "Time flies when you're having fun," he said. Cody noticed that he had transformed back into a male; surprisingly he felt rather disappointed about it.
"That was pretty fun," Cody agreed. He turned to look at his car, buried in snow, and sighed. "I don't have a shovel... I guess I could dig with my hands, then?" He looked at his thin gloves, obviously not meant for digging cars out of snow. Meanwhile Noah was having his own problems.
"Okay, this snow is seriously ticking me off," he snapped. "Do you know how weird it feels when these little flakes are floating through you?" Cody shook his head. "Of course you don't. You're alive." After floating in place for a few minutes longer, Noah glared at the sky and said, "Okay, that's it!" He angrily flew over to the car and dug out all the snow around the doors, then went into the passenger's seat to shelter. Cody blinked. "How- how did you do that?" he asked.
"How did I do what?" came the ghost's reply. Cody just sighed and followed him into the car. Like the air outside, it was very cold, so he put in his key and started it, then turning up the heater. After that he turned to Noah.
"So, how do you do things as a ghost, exactly? How do you- you know what, just tell me everything there is to know about ghosts. I'm really curious," he said, looking at the spirit.
"Well, um-" Noah straightened himself up in his seat. "-we're actually a lot like humans. Really similar, in fact," he said in a mock serious tone. "The only differences is that we fly, and are blue-ish, and can go through things but can still hold objects if we wish, and we can change form, and snow is really annoying-"
Cody huffed. "Can you explain in a tone that isn't sarcasm please?"
Noah ignored him. "-and we can cause wind drafts, and we're pretty cold to the touch of living. But other than that, we're completely the same; I don't see how you can even tell the difference," he finished plainly.
"Yeah, I can see how similar we are now. I can't believe I didn't see it before," Cody said sarcastically in turn.
Noah smirked. "But we're still superior to you living folk," he said.
"How so?!" Cody exclaimed. "We're way cooler than you dead people!"
"Say, did I mention that I can fly?"
"Well at least I can go through weather without cowering!"
The ghost blinked. "Once you die you will realize what we ghosts go through. I will shove you outside in a freaking blizzard and you will realize how annoying it is."
"I'd like to see you try," Cody smirked. "But you'll have to wait until I'm eighty or something. I'm not planning on dying anytime soon."
Noah sighed. "Neither was I, and then I got murdered." He looked up at the young man, still alive and well. "Yeah, you know what. Screw the awesomeness of being a ghost. Try not to die, already? Yolo is real."
Cody nodded slowly as flashes of different ways of dying went through his head. Coincidentally, the song Dumb Ways To Die got stuck in his head at the same time. After a few moments of awkward silence, Noah suggested, "Why don't we turn on the radio?" Cody reached over to turn it on, only to have world's most annoying song blare out.
"Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows, everything that's wonderful is what I-" Both of them instinctively covered their ears and reached over to change the station. Their hands brushed, and Cody turned pink. Noah pretended not to notice and turned to a news station.
"Welcome back to the Aftermath! It's been a very interesting day so far," the newsman said. "First of all, let's talk about this crazy weather we're having." He chuckled.
"You said it, Geoff," a woman laughed. "These storms are pouring in from the northwest. We'll be definitely seeing a lot of hail, snow and polar winds."
"Speaking of polar, you folks won't believe what's happened at the Muskoka Zoo!" Geoff exclaimed. "A polar bear escaped from it's cage just a few days ago. It's a polar bear in a snowstorm!" He laughed. "Be sure to be on the look out for black dots!"
"Geoff!" the anchor lady snapped before regaining her composure. "However he is right, you should keep a look out. If you see a polar bear near your house, or... anywhere, really, call the zoo immediately."
"Anyways, there's been a new discovery about love," Geoff said, changing the subject. "According to scientists, making out it good for you!" He waggled his eyebrows at his partner. "You know what that means, Bridgette?"
Bridgette rolled her eyes affectionately and leaned in for a kiss. Noah and Cody both gagged at the sounds of the two making out. While they couldn't see what was happening the both Noah and Cody had unintentionally formed a discreet image of the couple together. Noah slammed his translucent hand on the "change stations button". This station was playing some slightly oldish rock music. Cody let it play.
"Neil Diamond?" Noah asked, narrowing his eyes.
Cody nodded. "Yeah... I-I love Neil Diamond..."
Noah looked at him. "I love Neil Diamond."
Cody grinned at him before belting out the lyrics to Sweet Caroline at the top of his lungs.
"Stop!" Noah hissed, his eyes wide. "People will hear you!"
He didn't listen. "Come on, man, sing it with me!"
"I don't sing," Noah said while gritting his teeth.
Cody stared at him with big, watery eyes. Noah stared back, his gaze impassive.
5 minutes later Cody returned to singing, though this time there was another voice singing along with him.
"Hey, Noah," Cody said, getting out of the car.
"What?" the ghost said in a slightly irritated voice, mainly because snow was falling through him again.
"You're a pretty good singer."
"We're not speaking of that ever again," Noah said, though Cody could see that he was smiling.
