Chapter 5: Dinner

After dropping Sherlock off at Baker Street, him leaving the car with a searching look at them both before getting out, closing the door with a gentle slam. After he was gone, Kagome looked at Mycroft carefully.

"Are you going to tell him about what happened when we first met?" She asked. Mycroft tilted his head thoughtfully.

"Maybe. I thought that I could tell him my side and you could tell him yours, perhaps." She thought about it for a moment as they pulled away from 221b and nodded.

"Good idea." She grinned. "Was I really that scary?" Mycroft laughed.

"A bit." He reconsidered. "A lot. I don't fear many things - you are one of them. It still feels that way." Kagome smiled apologetically.

"Sorry, I know that I can be scary." She smirked darkly. "I personally feel that it's anyone who dares harm what I consider to be mine who should run as far as they can - as fast as they can." She blinked back the silver forming and smiled brightly. "But I'm sufficiently attached to you now that I would never kill you. You are part of my pack. What kind of…." She paused. What was she? She saddened. She didn't even know what she was - was it a human? Youkai? Immortal? "…. being would I be if I harmed what is mine?" She continued teasingly, but her good mood vanished.

Mycroft eyed her and reached into his pocket, unlocking his phone and finding the drafted message with ease. He pressed send and waited. Her phone beeped quietly. She blushed and muttered an apology as she got out her phone. He shrugged in a way that implied he understood. Her eyes widened as she read the text and they shot up to meet his.

"But…" She choked, her eyes filling with tears. She pressed a hand to her mouth as if that would help to hold back the sobs of relief. Mycroft smiled sadly.

"But nothing." He said softly. He moved to sit next to her and he held her other hand gently. "Kagome is Kagome. No need for labels or distinctions. No conditions. I accept you because you are scary, compassionate, kind, loving, friendly, protective and thousands of other traits. There is no accepting you 'in spite of' anything." His lips twitched into a smile. "Except maybe your low self-confidence." He smiled wider when a few tears escaped her eyes even as a laugh escaped her mouth.

The car soon stopped, and Mycroft discreetly looked away as Kagome wiped away the tears and cleaned herself up, putting her phone away and looking more like her normal self. Mycroft, when he next looked over, smiled gently.

"Shall we go?" Kagome nodded. He knocked once on the separator between the driver and passenger compartments. Soon afterwards, their door was opened and Mycroft stepped out, turning to give a hand to Kagome as she climbed out, which she accepted with a smile.

It was a small restaurant, suitably out of the way and not many people around. Mycroft watched as Kagome smiled in approval and bowed slightly, lending his arm. She laughed gently and took it, following him as he lead her through the entrance. He sat her down and sat opposite, ordering a bottle of white wine. Kagome was silent, a contented expression on her face, yet there was something behind her eyes that gave him pause. Mycroft knew his comment-via-text had comforted her, giving her a small amount of confidence that she had lost when John had carelessly reacted to her core self.

"Kagome," He started when the waiter had gone to let them decide what to eat. She watched him carefully, cautious of his serious tone. "What happened between you and John?" Kagome sighed, closing her eyes and tilting her head toward the table slightly before straightening herself. A self-depreciating smile formed on her lips, and part of Mycroft hated to see it there.

"He caught me a few weeks ago giving, hum," She thought for a moment before smirking, "Corrective treatment that perhaps had a more definite ending that didn't include letting the guy go." Despite the smirk, Kagome's eyes were dull, and Mycroft swallowed. He knew he would like this tale. "The guy had jumped at Sherlock and John two weeks before, attempting to mug and assault them, I assume. They managed to get away with only a few bruises, but I was still angry." She shrugged. "The first week I spent destroying any help that he might have had if he did suddenly go missing." She caught Mycroft's look and rolled her eyes. "I didn't kill the people, just set up a few deceptions. Then, I kidnapped the guy and set myself up in a nice little area of town where no one asks if you only go in a night and screams are heard." She smirked dangerously. "Not that they were. My reiki took care of that." She shook her head, smirk disappearing. "Anyway, John and Sherlock walk in just as I'm in the middle of cutting the guy up for pictures, getting into the muscle, of course. He'd heal too fast otherwise." Mycroft frowned.

"Wait, what do you mean 'he'd heal too fast'?" He interrupted. Kagome looked surprised, and then sheepish.

"Oh yeah, I forgot to say that he was a half demon. They have an accelerated healing ability and all the primal instincts of a full demon, just with a human heart." He nodded.

"I see. Continue." Kagome rolled her eyes good-naturedly before sobering.

"To say John wasn't pleased would be an understatement." She murmured, pausing for a moment as the waiter returned with their wine and asked for their order. Mycroft ordered a medium-rare stake while Kagome ordered a lasagne. She took a sip of the wine after the waiter once again left, humming her approval and put the glass on the table, though it didn't leave her hand. "He was horrified, though Sherlock understood why I did what I did. He, er," She cleared her throat and continued, her eyes just that little bit darker. "He said that what I was doing was inhumane." She chuckled suddenly, her eyes closing. She calmed down quickly and opened her eyes to once again stare at Mycroft, who was listening with rapt attention. "I'm afraid I lost a little of my control, dear Mycroft. My other self slipped out. I told him that I was not human anyway, and asked why should I be bound to the morals and rules of one. I told them both to get out and let the guy go." For a second, Kagome's eyelid twitched. "I went back to the flat and talked for a little while to Sherlock, then I left." She leaned back, took another sip of wine and shrugged. "I think you know the rest."

Mycroft watched her for a moment. "You -" He was interrupted by the waiter finally bringing the food. He and Kagome murmured their thank you's, but when the waiter left, neither of them touched the food. Kagome kept her gaze firmly locked on his. "You aren't telling me something." He stated, no doubt in his voice. For a moment, she stared at him solidly, not even twitching, then something seemed to fall away, allowing him the rare opportunity to witness her emotions in full. She blushed faintly, though there was a small amount of guilt in her eyes. She cleared her throat.

"The guy didn't leave immediately." She smiled slightly. "I wasn't feeling too good, and he offered physical comfort of a more… carnal nature." She murmured quietly. "I hadn't broken things off with John at the time, but as far as I was concerned, he had betrayed me viciously. I will never go out of my way to protect him again," She narrowed her eyes. "Though I do believe that enough of my scent will linger that most will stay away." She frowned briefly.

"What about Sherlock?" He asked lowly. Kagome looked at him in surprise, and smiled softly.

"I have come to treasure him. He is mine, Mycroft." Her eyes hardened. "As are you." She frowned in confusion for a moment, ignoring Mycroft's expression of surprise, and then cursed quietly, huffing out, "But then Sherlock likes John as a friend, so I guess I should protect him too." She smiled grimly. "Doesn't mean that I will protect him with my life." Mycroft shuddered, but pushed the ominous feeling away, as he was so used to doing, and gave a small smile.

"Glad that's sorted then." He gestured to the dinner. "Shall we continue?" Kagome smiled back and picked up her fork, beginning to eat while he did the same.

When the dinner had ended and they'd both entered the car, Mycroft asked her where she wanted to be dropped off.

"My apartment should be fine." She replied, waving her hand dismissively. She waited until he'd given the destination to the driver before she sent him a sly look. "Don't hesitate to ask me anything, will you?" Mycroft smiled blandly, already wondering about Kagome and Sherlock's deepening relationship and resolved to observe before questioning her. Kagome mentally smiled. She knew exactly what he was going to do. Most likely to be the 'big brother' talk, though, she supposed, it was unusual that it was the woman on the receiving end.

Whoa, that image of Sherlock as a woman was strangely attractive.

Mycroft narrowed his eyes as he saw Kagome flush slightly, swallowing the sudden increase of saliva in her mouth, and her eyes dilating.

"I'm sure I won't." He assured, snapping Kagome out of her fantasising. "What has gotten you so distracted?" As soon as she realised what she'd managed to do, Kagome's cheeks turned redder and her pupils contracted again. She laughed sheepishly.

"Oh, nothing." She smiled sweetly. Luckily for her, the car stopped, the driver knocking on the divider to let them know they'd arrived. She smiled wider. "Thank you so much for the meal, Mycroft." Just to freak him out, with a little bit of sincerity, she leaned forward and kissed his cheek, leaving him stunned as she quickly retreated from the car.

Well, she thought while she giggled helplessly, trying to get into the apartment, I'll be keeping his face as a little memento of tonight for a very long time.

Meanwhile, Mycroft, still in shock, knocked on the divider to get the driver to carry on to his own house. Then he grimaced as he realised what she'd done. Kissing his cheek so he wouldn't question exactly what she'd been thinking of.

Well, he thought, I won't forget this. However, he mused as he relaxed into the seat of his car, I suppose I can let it go for now, though I'm sure I don't really want to know what she was thinking of. It was probably something wildly inappropriate.
