Chapter 12
Later this evening right at the moment Gibbs and Hollis had returned back home from their little spontanous dinner, Gibbs phone vibrated in the pocket of his jacket and of course he wondered who that would be at this late hour of the day.
Maybe it is someone from work asking some advice about a case and it is that urgent that it can't wait till tomorrow. He finally picked up the phone and answered a kind of tired tone: „This is Gibbs." It was pretty obvious that Doctor Michaels was pretty tired too, but he did his best not to show that and he hated to the person with the bad news, as much as he knew that this was also part of his job.
„Mister Gibbs this is Doctor Michaels, I'm sorry that I'm calling you at this late hour of the day but there were some complications considering your daughter's medicial condition. The reason is unknown at this point but the heart of your daughter suddenly stopped beating at ten o'clock this evening and it took quite a while to stabilize her again."
He had hard time digesting all of this information, after he had slowly closed the door behind him he had to hold onto Hollis for support because it kind of felt to him at this point, like he would collapse on the floor if he wouldn't have someone to lean on at this point. Gibbs took a few deep breaths, trying to get to terms with the fact that his daughter had almost died for real today and as he had finally gathered himself again he replied: „Can you give any prognosis regarding her medicial condition at this point?" Doctor Michaels of course had expected that question from Jethro Gibbs and he hated the fact that he couldn't give any hope for improvement so far. He took some time to think about what to say next, he clearly wanted to choose his words carefully in this situation and then said: „I'm afraid that I can't give you any prognosis regarding your daughter's condition, because it's too soon to say how long it is going to take for heart to function on it's own again." With her other free hand Hollis kept on gently stroking Jethro's back, knowing well enough how much he needed her support in this critical time and she hoped that Kelly would win this fight for her live at the end.
He listened closely to every word that Doctor Michaels said and even if never had been the religious kind of person, he couldn't help but pray at this point: Please don't take my little girl away from me! I need her in my life so much and I don't know if could go through all this pain once again. It took a lot of strength to keep the tears at bay, which threatened to roll down his cheeks at this moment as all the worst case scenarios that he could come up with were popping up in his head and to finally end the call he then said: „Thanks for notifing me anyway Doctor and I'm confident that you will find a way to save my precious daughter."
Peter Michaels was clearly touched by those words from this concerned father and he was confident too that Jethro Gibbs daughter would make it through this whole thing in one piece at the very end, no matter how bad things looked for her right now but it was just too early for this young woman to die. „Thank you for all the faith you have in me Mister Gibbs and I really hope that I won't let you down."
He just has to find a way to save my little girl, I already lost Shannon and I at least Kelly in my life. He thought before he ended the call. Shortly after that he let himself fall into Hollis embrace for a few minutes. It felt so good as his head comfortly rested on his girlfriend right shoulder and willing to give him all the emotional support that he needed at this difficult time, she gently rubbed his back, as there were sometimes no words needed between them.
Meanwhile back at the NCIS Headquarter former Mossad Agent Ziva David was right in the middle of finishing some reports and of course she was also thinking a lot about Gibbs and his daughter. She couldn't imagine how hard this whole thing must be for Gibbs, as never had been in a similar kind of situation. But of course she prayed that Kelly would be okay at the end, not only had she become good friends with Gibbs daughter over the last years but one thing was for sure: It would devastate Gibbs if his daughter would really die.
Kelly clearly didn't deserve to die just yet, as she was still so young and had her entire life ahead of her. Tony also still sat at his desk, normally he would be already home by now but because of his Boss absence he did have to get a lot more work done as the temporary Team Leader. No matter how big the burden might be, he was glad to be able to lead the team during Gibbs absence, even if he had wished it wouldn't have been under such bad circumstances.
Ziva was interrupted in her thoughts as Tony said: „At first it was really weird to see Gibbs that changed, but after having a lot of time to get used to this whole situation, I don't miss the old Gibbs at all and would hate to see him back if Kelly doesn't make it." Of course he was aware of the fact that this might sound a little egotistical but he had mainly said that because he was worried for the emotional well- being of his boss.
„I definitely hope that Kelly makes it through in the end, as Gibbs did have to endure so much emotional pain in the past, I think that he kind of deserves to have a happy life once again." Ziva said before she turned back to her reports, as she was barely able to keep her eyes opened anymore after another long stressful day at the office.
