"Dad, Dad!" Came the shouts of an excited seven year old boy. I opened my eyes and lifted my head from grass where I had been laying on my back.
"Yes, Timothy?" I asked with an amused chuckle.
"Can we go to the pool today?" He asks (asked as he sat himself down next to me.
"Quite possibly, though we'll have to ask your mother when she and Jane get back from shopping." I replied as I followed his lead and sat crisscrossed.
We sat for a moment in silence. I studied him as he sat consumed in childlike thoughts. He has my red hair and blue eyes, but his body is more like his mother's. His face wasn't triangular like mine but more rounded like hers. As he sat playing with grass, I let my mind wander; and it took me to a night I hadn't thought of in many years.
-MEMORY-
It had started like every other time Adyson and I hooked up. One of us would use a code word, 'peaches' was the one she used that night. It meant she wanted me, but she wasn't home alon). I replied with spoon, meaning I'd be there soon.
When I got her message, I wasn't alone. I was in my brother's room, working on blueprints for our next big project.
"Hey, I just remembered that I was supposed to do something. Do you mind if I go?" I asked as I began tidying up a pile of blueprints sprawled in front of me. He only nodded, and I thought that was the end of it until he stopped me with his words.
"You're going to meet Adyson, aren't you?" I had my hand on the door handle when he spoke, I wasn't even sure he had spoken. I wasn't surprised though. Ferb was always good at figuring people out. He was especially good at reading me.
I turned to look at him, meeting his gaze as best I could.
"Yes." He just nodded his reply, but the disappointment in his eyes was obvious.
I should have stopped then. I should have just picked my phone out of my pocket and told her it was over, that I was done. Then, I should have walked over to Isabella's and told her we were over, and taken what happened next like a man.
But I didn't, I went and picked Adyson up from her house, then drove us both to the park. I texted Isabella with a lame excuse so she wouldn't get suspicious.
"Hey Phin?" Adyson asked from the passenger seat. I turned my head to look at her, but she wasn't looking at me; she was looking at her hands, folded in her lap.
"Yes Addy?" I replied, trying to prompt a reply from her. Since she wasn't looking at me, my voice seemed my only choice. She smiled at the nickname. It was something I only ever called her at times like these, when we were alone. Though she didn't look at me, I could feel my heart skip at the beauty in that smile.
Maybe that's why I didn't stop, why I didn't call it off. Because even then, I was already falling for her. But that doesn't make it better, no, nothing could make it better.
"Why won't you leave her? I know you don't love her." At this statement she turned her head to look at me, her long brown hair swishing at the movement. "I can tell by the way you look at her, and the way you act around her. You have her fooled. If you truly loved her, you wouldn't be here with me."
I wanted to ask her what she meant by that, but I already knew. If I loved Isabella, or if I even remotely liked her in that way I wouldn't be here right now. But I didn't love Isabella, we both knew that. Maybe it wasn't the right thing to do but I placed on Adyson's cheek, forcing her to look into my eyes.
"You're right, I don't love her. I'm in love with someone else." I said in a whisper, staring deeply into those emerald green eyes.
"Who?" She asked, her tone filled with hope. I couldn't help but smile as I realized we were getting closer, our lips almost touching.
"I think it may be you." I say replied as I closed the distance between us.
That night could have been perfect. Addy and I could have done what we always did, but when it was over things would change. Our relationship would change. But it didn't work that way, because love stories never work the way you want them to.
Addy and I had made our way to the back seat, and I had just touched down at second base when Addy had opened her eyes and let out a startled "Oh my god!" and made to cover herself up. By the time I turned around all I could make out was raven hair hurriedly disappearing around a corner. A corner that led home.
I turned back to Addy, who by now had her bra back on and was hurriedly pulling her shirt over her head, all the while colorfully cussing under her breath.
"Adyson?" She kept glancing out the back window, barely paying attention to me. I grabbed her shoulders, startling her, forcing her to focus on me.
"Addy, what did you see?" I asked, starting to get worried.
"Isabella." My heart skipped, but this wasn't the good kind of skip.
"What?"
"Phineas. Isabella, she just saw us. Me, I-I don't know if she saw us both. But she r-ran." Her voice broke, tears started falling from those green eyes. I pulled her close to me, trying my best to sooth her. My mind was racing and all I could do was whisper that it would be all right.
"But how can it be all right? How do you know that? Phineas she's my best friend, and she loves you. I'm a horrible person! I should never have talked you into this!" She began ranting, and it seemed that each word brought me closer to what would be my solution.
A terrible solution, I was an idiot for thinking that it was right. I was such a coward.
"I'll make it better Addy. No one will know." I wouldn't tell her how I'd make it better. I didn't even know how, but I would.
I had a horrible solution to the problem. I know that now, but back then it made sense. It was Isabella's and my horrible secret. I've never told anyone, but she might have. I have a feeling she might have told Ferb. After all, we haven't had a civil conversation since that day. But that may be because I told the whole school that I caught him and Isabella together. That was one of the many things I regret from my teens. What broke in me those years?
-Memory End-
"When do you think they'll be back? They've been gone forever!" He exclaimed suddenly.
I started) to reply, before then I heard a car pull up in front of the house.
"I think they might be back, let's go check." I said, and then watched as he hurriedly jumped up from the grass.
"Come one dad! Hurry up!"
